Fred was born with a pigeon's wing. people never made fun of him, though. one day he looked in the mirror and saw that HE WAS A PIDGEON! he pooped right there as he often did, wherever he was.

I;m quite new to Halo PC, but am starting to play it quite a bit now. i do play Halo 3 a lot and have noticed that you have to aim considerably ahead of your opponent when sniping in Halo PC. It is extremely different than Halo 3 as opposed to hardly aiming ahead at all. i am just wondering, why do you have to aim ahead so much?

Information takes time to travel between your computer and the host's computer. So by the time the host receives a message from your computer that says "I fired a bullet", it has also received a message from your target's computer saying "I stepped to the right". Now, if you aimed to the right, you would have hit him, otherwise you'll miss.

This is somewhat unrealistic obviously, especially when dealing with explosives or vehicles, but adds quite a bit of strategic depth to the game. Either you like it or you don't really.

Halo PC wasn't built with an online environment in mind [save System-Link, but lag doesn't really exist with that]. Meaning, since it wasn't built from the ground-up to support playing online initially, the port suffers from lag issues.

Most notably, as you said, sniping =X

Unless Gearbox told porkies, the HPC net code is nothing like that of the Xbox, and was reworked from the ground up for online play.

The original netcode on the Xbox from what I understand runs at the speed of the player with the highest latency to provide a more accurate/realistic experience, but is more prone to problems with higher latency. However, since the code was designed with only LAN play in mind, and given that latency and bandwidth wouldn't be an issue in that environment, this was the ideal solution, but it simply wouldn't work as a satisfactory model for use over the Internet.

The reason for leading in HPC, is simply because of the latency between the server and the player, although there are other factors to take into consideration (even zero latency between yourself and the server will still require leading because of how it was designed). HPC unfortunately does not have any visual correction like other games support, and the server doesn't give the clients very much say in things (I won't go into more detail, but it does at least cut down cheating), other than a bit of slack in positioning.

I honestly thought it was because people in Halo:CE know how to strafe and those in halo 2 and 3 don't =P

No but seriously, the original halo PC isn't really equipped with auto aim or anything like halo 2 for PC is. Personally, I prefer the lead as it makes it more life like. If you're aiming at a moving target in real life, keeping the aim on him is gonna do less damage than aiming slightly ahead. Even when I got Halo 2 I turned off the aim assist since it was just easier that way.

If it helps, having higher refresh rates usually reduce the lead for some reason... however it can cause graphical glitches like flashes on the screen if it goes over your monitors refresh rate. I had a 60mhz monitor and cranked the refresh up to 85. The targeting was almost dead on with the guy but because of the graphical glitching and the fact that I was used to leading for so long I swapped the refresh back to 60mhz.

Yeah, the problem with Halo 1 PC, is that it assume there'd always be zero latency. The Internet doesn't work like that.

Most of the PC issues posted here are the result of PEBKAC.

The trouble with the lead in Halo PC, is that it was designed for 56k users to be able to play as well.

Remove the 56k support, and you fix the lead. I'm sure someone would fix the netcode if the source code was released.

How does 56k support mess it up so badly? Nobody even uses it.

And I find leading EXTREMELY hard. Especially since my ping constantly changes every 5-10 seconds. For example, it jumps form 64 to 100, then from 100 to 75, then to 180, then to 60, then to 90, then to 150, etc.

I can win a match I host (I have) by 25 to 10, or me vs 3 -4 other people, but with leading and the lag, I just can't...

It's BS, and like the guy who responded first said, you either like it or you don't.

it takes a long time to master, but once you do, you pistol -blam!- everyone before they lay one shot on you.

basically right now IM the person getting pistol-owned before i can lay a shot on them, lol.

Yeah try never to play Unreal tournament III when its laggy. its like falling through Video Game hell!

jeez its really easy to tell that this forum is A LOT more friendly then Halo 3 forum. just after spending so much time there (that i now regret) with jerks spamming up the topics with vile responses, and me just getting here and having my first topic in this forum being filled with ALL helpful replys, its really cool! thanks for all the help!

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

Unfortunately Microsoft owns the source code, and they don't release the source code for anything important. :(

Halo CE will always be the best game in the Halo franchise. What a perfect game.

the leading off thing really irked me at first, since i had only played halo 2 on xbox live when i first logged on to halo pc. when i finally realized that you have to lead your targets [i was trying to snipe someone and missed out of frustration and killed him] it was pretty easy to catch on. playing alot of snipers helps you get better at it too.

Yeah it gets me angry cause i shoot RIGHT AT HIM and he just keeps running. then i get a bad shot way too in front of him and it mysteriously kills him. im starting to catch on.

It takes some time to get used to but once you do be fine. It actually makes the game a little more challenging and separates the "noobs" from the men.

Kindly refrain from Frog-Blasting my Ventcore.

I think that one of the main reasons is that sniper shots travel a lot slower in Halo 1 PC than Halo 3.

The bungie.net community is the halo PC community that is renowned for being unbelieveably sucky.

Leading only gets you so far. The key is to trick the server into believing that you are aimed directly onto your opponent while in reality you are leading well beyond him/her. How? Aim onto the person first, pause, then lead and shoot. The way to think about it is "aiming twice." It makes Halo PC much more difficult than other online games.

When latency gets crazy, then much of it comes down to this inital tricking of the server, and favorable hit prediction since to some extent you just end up guessing.

That was painfully bad. Too long, bad voice acting/camera control, and wmv default titles and terrible effects = instabad.
