Subject: Do you believe that Halo 3 PC should be exclusively available for V...

For those of you who are unaware, Directx10 does NOT require vista to work properly. I was able to get Halo 2 running on windows XP (don't ask me how).

I mean, so much so, that microsoft is going to put Dx11 on hold by NOT, I say again, by NOT releasing it with Windows Seven. I mean have you guys seen what some people have to fork over just to use Dx10? Well, actually, the new line of 9600s aren't half bad, some of them will go for less than a hundred bucks. Still, that does not make up for the fact that microsoft is practically force-feeding us Vista for now and forever.

I honestly don't care if its only for vista or XP compatible.

Also to above poster Halo 2 does not require or use DX10. It was made for DX9.

Have you even used vista let alone know what it needs to run?
Yeah, actually.

I played Oblivion on XP and then went to Vista on XP, I got a decent 40 FPS. On Vista I was getting 20 FPS in the beginning dungeons.

Also, I just plain hated Vista's security issues.
.

Ok let me rephrase that. Have you used vista beyond fooling around with it? Have you installed the proper drivers? Do you even know what these security issues are?

If you are getting worse FPS you probably dont have drivers newer than a year installed.

Yeah...

First off, allow me to explain for my terrible writing: lack of sleep.

Secondly, yes. I have used vista for months on end as a gaming / neato-novelty operating system, but I didn't plan on doing any halo modding on it since I knew it would be pretty buggy.

On my current rig (which I have used vista and XP on before) I played Oblivion on XP, getting a nominal 40 FPS with my settings maxed out (but with grass turned off) @ 1280 x 1024 res, 2 Gigs of RAM (PC-6400), and an intel Core 2 Duo processor clocked at 3.00 GHz. On vista, with Vista drivers, i got about 20-30 FPS in dungeons.

I dont see why people compare an OS with 3 service packs to another one with 1 service pack. god the internet takes the smallest bug in an OS and multiples it by 10000 and before you know it vista suddenley ''sucks''. now most everyone thinks that XP was created from jesus himself. you all might want to start thinking positive about vista because you will have to have it sooner or later. and if you think you can do a better job or see all the ''flaws'' in vista then you can gladly create another OS and put your name on YOUR corporation or be productive and report the bugs instead of whinning about them. I'm not saying that I dont like XP I think XP is just as good as vista.

Well there are several reasons:

1) The hardware upgrades that are necessary to run Vista without your system's resources being stolen would cost an outrageous amount of cash.
2) Currently, Windows vista requires too much to run for most consumers on their current computers.
3) The interface of vista is too user-friendly, thus it underminds many security issues, which is a pain in the neck when it comes to modding Halo CE. Security issues and Halo modding are conflicting issues.
4) The price. I mean how much does a copy of Windows Vista cost?

I think your first two reasons are valid. That'll be fixed in time though.
As for the third reason - the "user-friendly" interface of Vista isn't a security issue. It's extremely infuriating and made for people have no clue about computers. Security is definetely increased from XP, whatever you're saying.
I think you meant that security is inflicting with your ability to mod? You don't have to mod to be a 'true' Halo player. And people will bypass that very easily. You're telling me we can't mod Halo 2 Vista and you're also saying you'd worship someone who cracked multiplayer for XP.
Fourth reason...
Home Premium (the decent one for personal use) is around 120 bucks. That'll go down a bit in time, and I see no reason not (edited for typo) to get it once the kinks are worked out in the future, and when it'll be the new standard.

It all comes down to money, anyways. It seems like this is all for Halo 3 PC. So is it worth it for you?

vista requires what 512 mb of ram when idle. thats not a lot by todays standards. you should have atleast 2 gb now adays. my friend runs vista with a nvidia 6800 and 1gb of ram and a pentium 4 very cheap hardware mate. to userfriendly??? it has more security than XP man... please dont talk when you dont know what your talking about.

*Sigh*... Egotistical teenagers these days.

First off, I know a guy who runs windows 98 on his PC because he claims that windows XP and beyond are resource-stealing operating systems (or -as he says- he just hates them). If he has any issues with plugging in new PC hardware, he just writes coding for his own cracks and drivers.

Also, this thread serves just as much purpose as any other, but far more useful and committed to the community.

That placed to the side, Gears of War PC was released After Halo 2 Vista, but it can be played on Windows Live and -more importantly- it is Windows XP Compatible.

By the time Halo 3 comes out on a PC (if it does), Vista could possibly be outdated. Most people will have a Vista computer. But I still think XP is the way to go.

I respect your opinion, I'm probably just going to disagree with it.

I despise Vista, as it is a worthless OS that is no different to the previous OS, except has a shiny new skin, more irritating security features and uses a heckload more memory. I mean, the ONLY reason I've heard people want to upgrade to Vista is for DX10, and that is essentially the same as DX9.
I mean, Microsoft have pretty much forced most of the newly released computer to have Vista on them. It's a big farce; I'd rather wait until the service packs come out before I think of approaching it with anything less than a barge pole.

Please no-one take offence from what I said, it is my opinion and that is it. I won't be swayed, but I'm not trying to sway anyone else away from Vista either.

The ignorance in this thread is making me facepalm harder than I ever have.

If you get half the fps in Vista, something is wrong with your settings.

I got 50 fps in the first dungeon on Vista.

I get 50fps in Halo 2 on 1280x1024 with 4xAA

And I have an 8600GT as well. Please explain your failure.

"'Tis better to be silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt."

Exactly Obi's point. That's the same opinion XP haters had when it first came out. But now no one would get near Windows ME. And history usually repeats itself.

Your statement makes no sense.

The Xbox 360's DirectX is a different build than XP's or Vista's.

  • 08.17.2008 11:54 AM PDT

24 and female.

I have to agree with a few people on this. By the time Halo 3 comes out, XP will be beyond ancient, just like how Win 98 is now (hell, more like Windows 2000). Microsoft is stopping the support of XP within a year, and has already stopped selling the OS. Plus, someones luck of finding a computer that has XP pre-installed will slowly dissipate (I already believe you can't find one anywhere, unless you bought from Ebay, since when I got my new computer over a year ago, all the computers had Vista pre-installed even then). Therefore, it will only be right to make Halo 3 for Vista (maybe even Seven, if it's out by then) since most everyone by that time will have Vista (or above).

Instead of saying that it requires vista it should just require DX10.

4) The price. I mean how much does a copy of Windows Vista cost?

I disagree with all of these.

1: The hardware requirements for vista were standard in OEM PC's 6 months or more before vista shipped. PC parts have gone down significantly and you can build or buy your own vista ready computer from 400-700 bucks depending on what you put in it.

2: See above.

3: No idea what your point is there. A UI being too user friendly does not open security loop holes last I checked. If you are talking about UAC there is nothing to complain about it. If it bugs you then you can turn it off. It got nerfed anyway in SP1. I don't know why people still use UAC for fuel in their arguments.

4: About 100 bucks for home premium OEM, but think of how expensive XP was when it came out? Its a great deal for a great OS.
