I want to get an internet conection in my room so I can play Halo 2 on xbox live. Our internet provider is Adelfia so the connection isn't dial up. Can I just split the cable like a telivision cable an run it up to my room or do I have to have the cable guy do it?

You need a router to share the cable signal.

i could type out a lengthy explination, but you should just do a google search for routers and cable modems. try research, it works.

You know what? I'll just go to Radioshack and annoy the sales guy until he tells me exactly what I need and how to hook it up. I love Radioshack.

You need either:
A) A router
B) a hub.

You plug the cable modem's outgoing connection into either A or B then run your outgoing cable to your room. This way you can run more than one connection. Or if you want to get swanky, you can run a long cable from the modem (if no one else uses the internet) and put a hub halfway in between (assuming the run to your room is >100 feet). Hope that helps some!

Hubs work as well... as do switches...

hmmmmm the new Cisco switches are hot. I wish I had one, they turn over data faster than I've ever seen.

If I use a hub then whoever is using this computer can't use the internet while I'm on xbox live correct? That's no good so I'll have to dish out the money for a router. Damn.

You can, technically, but you would then need a proxy server to share the internet connection, or purchase more IP's from the Aldelphia, both are not very good idea's for a basic user. The purchasing of two IP's is really dumb as a matter of fact, there are very few reason to do that, none of which would apply to shareing internet to one bedroom. So, using a hub or switch is not a real great idea, can, but I would recomend against it.

dude, just go out and buy a linksys, d-link or microsoft router. Connect it up to your modem, share dhcp service to your network (most of these routers are setup to do this automatically). The only configuration you may need to do is setup your new router to clone the mac address of your PC you have connected to the dsl modem right now. mac Address reservations are very common among Cable ISP's.
These routers are not gonna cost you much, i just saw a linksys one for $43.00 after rebates at Fry's.
