Welcome to the jungle

If titles aren't doing anything bad for the community then why discontinue them? If you think they need to be changed to be more accurate then I suggest you give some examples of how to change them.

It would be easier to do if we new how the trust system works currently, but if your going to make a post about something you don't like, and isn't making the community a bad place, then you should explain a way to make it better, instead of suggesting that it be taken it away completely.

I'm not the kind of person that "just leaves" things the way they are, if I believe something can be improved, or changed. I will say it.

I find the titles refreshing. Why remove them? They do more good than harm, to throw out all the work the Webteam put into them would be a complete waste. Anyways, for the most part, on average most of the titles I've seen seem to be well placed. There are only a few occasions where I've seen a higher trust title member post something against the rules.

The titles should stay. Achronos is right (when is he not).

Simply put. If you make ligit posts on a daily basis...or so many times a week then you will gain one of them fancy member titles. But if you do bad and have your topics locked or you posts reported then you may lose a rank in your member title.

I have to agree with Achronos on this issue. We can accurately judge what we do not know. None of us know what the exact formula is. I have noticed that most heroic, legendary, and mythic members carry themselves with more caring attitude on these forums. Since we will never know the formula we cannot accurately criticize it. How do we know it does not accurately evaluate quality posts? We do not. But we have to trust Achronos and he seems very trustworthy.

Would it be an acceptable compromise to allow only site ninjas and administrator to see title bars? Members would thus be unable to see their own bar colour, a price you'd have to be willing to pay for the adjustment. Alternatively, make them only visible on your profile page, not on everybody's public forum posts.

I realise Achronos has already given a definitive answer, I was merely curious how the community felt about this.

You're only a Legendary member, hawhaw!

What am I now? Probably Super Mythic, right?

Oh wait...darn it...

Seriously though, I've stated my views to Hawkeye, and I stand by them. I think the titles were a good addition and I like them. You might say my opinion is influenced by the fact that I'm a Legendary member (which it could be I suppose), but I've liked the idea before I became a Legendary member. I have yet to see anyone treated poorly because of their member title, and despite some individuals, I think it works well.

I'm sure you'll go up too, you just haven't been a member for long enough is all.

  • 08.12.2008 7:15 PM PDT

I don't understand why people complaining about titles so much. I was Mythic for over two months and I didn't get treated differently by anyone.

Sure, it looks cool, but in the end, its not a big deal.

If you don't want to read them, then simply don't.

This is a benevolent dictatorship. You have no rights. :D

Personally, I don't care that much about the titles because I use Coup de Bungie and my bar is crimson and my title is "fuzzy dice". The only thing I would really like to see different is that the titles need to be a little more difficult to earn. I have seen quite a few Heroic Members that I think should have a bit more experience before they get any public recognition.

Well, if you read Achronos' post on page 3, you will see why we should keep the titles.

He said that the member titles are like XBL Gamerscore and Achievements. They don't have any worth to them, but it is something to reach for. Members act good in the public forums so they can earn a higher title. People like to get rewarded for doing something. In the case of member titles, everyone benefits: The user, the community, and the web team.

Ah. I hadn't read that far quite yet.

But fair enough. I wasn't trying to recommend that they be removed completely, but rather that they be hidden from the general public or they be made apparent only on a member's profile page. Nevertheless, I never really concerned myself with member titles, so either way, I'm perfectly content. =)

At the very least, the title formula needs to be more transparent. I see nothing wrong with boosting trust.

To a certain extent, yes. It is an automated system and it cannot read your post and completely evaluate it but again, we have to trust.

  • 08.12.2008 7:43 PM PDT

I kinda like the titles the way they are now. I just like how that you get rewarded for posting and obeying the rules and such. I also don't really care as too much for peoples titles, but I really like how they have their title. It just makes you wanna post more and that would be your goal - to become a Mythic Member. Granted no one knows the Trust System, but that's the cool thing about it. It's like an old quote everyone knows,

"Life is like a box of chocolates (in this case titles), you never know what your gonna get"So I think their fine the way they are. So I would suggest to not pay so much attention to them though.

im hosting a trust boosting thread tonight. just change your language settings to chinese and post whatever you want in the thread to gain more trust.
on topic...yeah i agree with the op. i see hawk in here all the time and have wondered why hes not a higher ranked member. also lately i have seen MANY heroic members posting spam or in the wrong forum. like achronos said though they arent going anywhere so i guess we can just ignore them.

What's the point of titles if we just wait one year? I have never heard of a member that's ranked in titles before a year of being on Bnet. Titles are pointless, and they're not fun when people judge you based on what your title is.

Posted by: Achronos
1) Saying the trust number only takes into account quantity and no quality metrics is not accurate.

2) The trust number (and the titles) are a fairly accurate predictor of conduct, despite your statements that they mean nothing. This suggests that they are useful to at least some degree.

3) Even as I say that, people who say "they're not useful" miss the entire point. They're not meant to be useful. They're not even really positive reinforcement, although that is a secondary effect. Like most things we do, their primary design goal is "fun". I don't know if you've noticed, but a lot of people like to get little vanity rewards for stuff they're likely to do anyway (see Xbox Live acheivements as an example). The reward (in this case, a title) is utterly meaningless (even though the number powering it is useful), but as getting it requires "continuous positive contributions to the community" - something we'd like to see people do, well, that's a bonus for us. People who like little vanity rewards get something, we get something, and the community benefits.

Wondering at their usefulness is like demanding to know what Gamerscore is good for. Both questions completely miss the point. As do people who PM me asking why their title changed - who will not get any answer from me.

At least change the title colors, so they're more noticeable. They colors are too close together. I'm talking about red, white, green, ETC.

Actually, there was a guy that got his Heroic title in under a year that posted in this thread. I think he was on pg. 2 and he averaged 5 posts a day.
