I respect your opinion, I'm probably just going to disagree with it.
Having attempted to read as much as I can, people are saying that as a whole, many Heroic-Legendary-Mythic members do not deserve the title they have attained. This may well be true, but I feel that detracts from the fact that on average, most of the people with their title deserve it. I can think of a few examples where people of those titles have been more stupid than allowed, but not a huge number.
The trust systems seems to work off post count, number of reports, and warnings and blacklists. Time as a member appears to have an impact but I am inclined to disagree. It only does so directly; having beena member for ages means that you have had much, MUCH more time to post many clever and intelligent things, or that you have been online for so long, you have since matured and so may be considered more 'trustworthy' (for lack of a better word) than someone who has recently joined.
This recent joiner we hypothetically speak of may well be very intelligent, but are also more likely to be someone who has simply created an account to cause trouble.
The other part I'd like to address is the fact that we can't see what causes the changes. I like that. My reasons:
See Halo 3. There are levels in that, 1-50. It is plainly obvious what changes it, and people cleanly miss the point of levels. Many see it as like levels of a computer game - progressing up the way unil you get to 50 then whoop-de-doo, end of the game. But, the system is there to help you reach your true playing level and play against other people who are your level, making the gamplay experience a more interesting one. Had it been up to me, I'd have made your true level invisible, and you only get a rough indication of where you are at.
This would then be like the trust rating we have on Bungie.net. The true workings behind it are invisible to help stop people from seeing it as the type of level I mentioned before (that, however, doesn't seem to have done much - people still see it as a sort of rank. Whether this is intentional is debateable, but it works in that way) and to help stop manipulation (as Achronos has mentioned many times before). This tends to frustrate people, though, as you feel you want to progress through the 'game' but you can't see exactly how well you are doing.
Anyway, a bit of a ramble at the end there. Sincere apologies if I repeated too much of what other people have said.
Edit: Darnit, why do I feel the necessity to join these things at such a late stage all the time?! I am also not in any way trying to compete with Fors, srsly >.>
Edit No.2: Isn't this discussion kinda moot as Achronos alread gave his omnipotent opinion?
