If the covanent notice that there getting therew asses kicked on earth wouldn't they just go back into orbit and glass the planet like they did to the other worlds (most of them anyway)

Maybe because there is an important artifact. Or the Covenant have some kind of honour thing like the native americans where the yhave to get close to the enemy as possible and bring back trophys etc.

I doubt a super weapon. Probably another one of those damn rocks that the Covenant keep on finding. Maybe even some cavern like that within Reach.

As for going off the planet and just glassing it. They've already begun doing so. Watch the Halo 2 Announcement Trailer. That is a glassing. My best bet is actually they failed in the attempt to glass the planet/ wipe out our Fleet in system and were forced groundside where we will fight them off. But that is just a guess.

I think what happened is that those explosions are shiva tactical nukes and that the covenant were losing the battle and mid fight desended groundside ala sigma octanus IV

No, that was definitely a glassing. We don't use nukes that often on our own planets. Most especially Earth. We are trying to save the planet, not destroy it.

If the casualties are fairly low and the enmys losses fairly high I think tactical command would be desperate enough to do it. They did it on Reach and that other planet.
Plasma also doesn't make orange mushroom clouds.

That you know of that is. Besides I seem to remember Bungie saying that the video we are referring to was a glassing in process.

" Your destruction is the will of the gods, and we are their instrument. "

Doesn't sound like they are interested in our enslavement.

umm just medium-small sized explosion on that planet arent glassing, glassing is what happened with Harvest, The whole planet turned to red, molten.etc, glassing is entirely obliterating that planet, not just a bunch of explsions that arent big enough to destroy even a quarter of the planet

Glassing is a long task that is not done in a matter of seconds buddy. Learn to read better. Geez. Even inside The Fall of Reach, IN THE FREAKING PROLOGUE, they accurately described how a planet is glassed. They also did again inside First Strike. If a planet just went up inside one explosion, then things would be different and Reach wouldn't have had part of it spared.

A glassing takes several days depending on how many ships you have.

The whole planet of Harvest may have turned to molten slag and such, but it was not within a matter of seconds. The Covenant use their ship based weapons to glass a planet. I repeat Ship class. If your idea ona ship class weapon is one that wipes a planet out that quickly, then why the hell are our hips taking a salvo or two before they go up in flames? Please explain that one.

I recommend carefully re-reading those two books I mentioned because it will make you more knowledgable on Halo then you already are.

If a glassing of a planet such as harvest took several days? why was there only one covenant ship there? When harvest was destroyed, one covie ship was there, which sent that transmission, when the admiral took ships down there and started the war of harvest, more covenant ships were there, that didnt mean they were AT Harvets when it was destroyed, that ship that sent the message to the UNSC ship must have had a prophet on it, although they used programs to encode the message, If a prohet WERE on that ship, then it obviously would have been heavily armed, which was the destruction of harvest

and also when the battle of Reach was taking place, the UNSC ships took salvos of plasma from the Covenant ships, they did not use any larger weapons because the ships/dropships were nearby, behind the UNSC fleet, which meant the battle was a diversion, which means reach was not glassed, it was invaded

Let's see here.

We lost contact with Harvest on February 3, 2525 at 1427 hours. We sent out a scout ship arriving at Harvest on April 1, 2525. No contact back. A single Covenant ship can easilly take out a scout ship on its own. We send out a three ship battle group on October 7, 2525. Which is almost a full year later.

I'd say that the single Covenant ship in system had more than enough time to waste a planet on its own. Wouldn't you agree? Nearly what? Seven months to wipe out an entire planet with superior firepower and the like? Yeah get your times and facts straight buddy. It takes a while.
