The Infamous Mac Question

I have a Mac, and it is an old beige and has a 1.0GHz G4 upgrade and a 32MB PCI Radeon 7000.

I am thinking of getting a new PowerMac G4 form Apple, the 1.25GHz model, single CPU with a 64MB Radeon 9000. Will this new config be comfortable for Halo?

What are some of you Mac users using? i know I have run into some of you online in the servers.

Also, how do I get my Kensington 5 button mouse to allow my to use the other buttons to switch grenades and donkeypunch? I have Mouseworks installed.

Thanks

No it won't.

Macs can't handle Halo from what I've seen. It will play but the FPS will not be anywhere near that of the Xbox and the graphics won't be up to par with the xbox version either.

I have a dual processor G4 (1 ghz processors) with an ATI 64 meg graphic card and it runs fine. You should have no problems with your setup with a single 1.25 ghz processor. You may want to opt for a 128 meg or 256 meg graphics card but as I said your setup should be fine.

I have a Dual 500Mhz w/ a 64 MB Radeon 8500 and it does slow done sometimes and like Vice said it isnt up to par with the Xbox version BUT if you get a 128 or 256 like BigBug said maybe it will be! ya just never know! hope that was helpful and good luck!

However, the mac version runs plenty faster than the PC version on average.

Just be sure you have a nice video card and plenty of RAM. Those are the two clinches to a fast gaming machine.

Well now, I have an iMac g4 1.25 ghz with a 64 meg. GeForce 5200 fx, and it works fairly well. Framerate is "ish" in some of the tighter battles with the graphics cranked up, but I know the Nvidia chips in general are slightly sub par anyway, and don't support all the effects. As for the mouse, you can configure all that in game. Mouseworks not required. I have a 3 button, and I use for grenades and melee. Fun times... I could easily get the framerate up by cutting some of the effects (and I have done so before), but I like it better when it looks pretty ;)

NEVER. Not to make anyone angry, but everything PC no matter if it is windows or Halo or the box itself, is slow, confusing, easy to mess up, and has so many problems. My box is SLOW but it can whip any comparable PC, and many that should kill it. Halo is technically unsupported on my old mac, yet it gets a better framerate then my friends 2 yr old dell laptop. That may be because pc laptops have notoriously bad graphics, or maybe because Macs are just more stable.

Whatever. I thank you all for your help, it is comforting to know that when I spend a few bucks Ill get performance back in my new comp.

Sorry, I've been brought up in the land of the Mac-hating PC mags. And, of course, Rooster Teeth's Switch video!
Do Mac mice still only have one button?

no my mouse has 5 buttons, if you will read the above posts. right now halo will not let me use more than the left and right though

people only hate the mac because they have either never used one or are too uncreative to see things differently

Ok, there is an alternative then. In mouseworks, assign the extra mouse buttons to extra keystrokes that you don't use in game (like the num pad buttons), but only for the Halo application. Then go in Halo and it should recognize the buttons as those keys. If that doesn't work, I'm lost, but I think that should be alright.

Don't drink to excess– You might shoot at tax-collectors... and miss

Computer: Power Mac G5 CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (2.2) Number Of CPUs: 2 CPU Speed: 1.8 GHz L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB Memory: 1.25 GB Bus Speed: 900 MHz

ATi Radeon X800 XT Mac Edition
Display Type: LCD Resolution: 1680 x 1050 Depth: 32-bit Color

I've got a dual 1.8 GH processor G5 with an nVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 graphics card. I use the 4 button Kensington Expert Mouse trackball. I could run the game with higher graphics settings than I do, but when I zoom the scopes on scoped weapons the periferal vision is very blurry, though in the scope it's crisp. I suppose it's more realistic, but I'd rather have periferal vision.

I have not had much luck with assigning mele or grenades to the other buttons, (with or without MouseWorks), but maybe it has something to do with the fact that I'm using the trackball in my left hand and so I'm reversing the buttons to start with.

I'd really love to get the Command, Option and Control buttons to Mele, Grenade and Jump. I used these buttons in Marathon and every FPS I've played! Why not just saw my thumb off, Bungie, Gerarbox or whoever is responsible?

I've downloaded 2 programs that are supposed to be able to reassign keys at the system level. I'd set up another user ID on the Mac just for gaming if I get around to it. I've heard that the program that seemed most likely to work has some compatability issues with OS X 10.3.8 and I just updated to that version, so I'll wait till they update it to be compatable.

The game makers have locked out these keys, but you can Control-click, or Option-click to launch grenades, etc.

Heyyo,

The main reason mac's run much better is the OS. Windows is pretty slow compared to it, especially in games. DirectX is a pretty slow rendering path, probably the slowest for realtime rendering. OpenGL's much better but not as developped.. but OGL 2.0 should be a nice leap. :)

One thing I love aboot the MacOS is it's based off FreeBSD, one of the best OS's ever made. Soo powerful, soo effective.. oh so nice. Mac's are living proof of how good this OS is. Once I get better at linux? heck, I might go as far as to say I'll venture into the world of FreeBSD, n' try to setup a good OS environment, n' hope I don't kill myself in the process. :p

You see folks, most of us have grown up on windows, so the idea of a diff OS seems stupid since this one's fine. True, it is fine, but not the best IMO. The main reason why people prefer windows OS's is cause they're extremely popular. Many companies either tend to work towards, or base their business on Windows programs. Wether, games, or not.

This now brings me more offtopic: xbox. you see, xbox doesn't use a huge os, just one focused purely on gaming. If I remember correctly, it doesn't even use DirectX. So yeah, xbox doesn't suffer from the slow rendering paths of DirectX, which's one of the main reasons most games built for xbox runs better than the pc equivalent version, Halo being one example.

If ya want proof of how slow directx is? do benchmarks. UT does both directx and ogl. even better, go to http://www.tomshardware.com and look for ut2k4 comparison of preformance between Linux and Windows. Linux almost always pulled ahead of windows by a whole 10F/S. Interesting how a free OS pwns one that costs ya over $100 CDN eh? ;)

Anywho, back ontopic... finally, lol.

So I believe that yes, since you're gonna try a mac, it should be fine. That vidcard's not the best in the world, I suggest upgrading. a 9600 PRO or higher would totally pwn with halo onna mac. I know there's mac versions made of pretty much all ATI cards, so save up some cash, and get one (if you can aim for a 9800 PRO) and you'll be darn glad you did. =D
