Don't forget, some of the lines were right out of Aliens. It's just their way of giving props. Wish they would have continued that a little for H2.

Somehow I seriously doubt that Halo recieved any inspiration from the abomination that was Starship Troopers. If Starship Troopers counts as sci-fi, the genre must be dead, or at least comatose.

The original Halo was heavily inspired by Aliens. The battle rifle, the marine outfits even the MC's flashlight.

When I first bought Halo I played it for 3 hours, and then took a break and watched Aliens in its entirety. Those were the days...

While there is a nod to the movie Alien in an easter egg on the Pillar of Autumn, I don't see a whole lot of connections to the second movie in the series. Halo finds its origins more in Marathon than Aliens. The Covenant are much closer to Phfor than Aliens. The assault rifle is almost an exact version of the Marathon assault rifle w/out a grenade launcher, etc. There are many more connections that have been made, so I won't repeat them all here.

One could argue a similarity between the marines of Aliens and the Halo marines, but I think any real direct connections are few and far between.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

Anoher ALIENS connection
The dropship pilot in aliens and the ESCAPE pod pilot from pillar of autum were the same

I suspect you've missed the point of Starship Troopers . . . try watching it with Irony set to 'on'. A lot of the incidental stuff in it is hilarious - the news bulletins with kids stomping on bugs as their contribution to the war effort, the neo-fascist society that Earth has become where you have to serve in the army in order to gain the right to vote, the 'experiments' they do on captured aliens - it's a work of comedy genius.
Anyway, I don't think Starship Troopers was a big influence on Halo - clearly the Alien franchise was - I mean the little Floods are virtually identical to face-huggers . . .

I understand that Starship troopers is a satirical film, however, lets not confuse it with a good film. When I watch a satirical film (especially a satirical war film), I expect something a little less "lowest common denominator", something that might possibly provoke one to think on a deeper level. Films like Duck Soup and Doctor Strangelove are infintely better satirical war films.

Now, to keep this post halfway on topic, I've heard that people have said that the vehicles and weapons in Halo were inspired by those in Aliens. Does anyone else feel that way, and if you do, would you be kind enough to explain it to me? I just don't see it. I can see Sgt. Johnson taking something from the marine sgt. in Aliens, but to me, most of the human weapons (and some of the Covenant ones) scream Marathon.

The Elites are basically Predator Lite.

The Halo is Ringworld Lite.

The Master Chief is a BOOK Starship Troopers Mobile Infantry Lite. (Pretty much any M.I. from the original Starship Troopers book would easily kill the Master Chief).

Many of the ODSTs in the Halo books have the same names as characters from the original S.T. book, i.e. Major Silva.

There are a lot of homages in Halo even without Aliens. The best Alien homage is the Marine who freaks out in the Halo 1 level Truth and Reconciliation after you "rescue" Captain Keyes and your air support gets cutoff. "We're screwed man, SCREWED!"

Although I must say that Gravemind's homage to the plant from Mario Brothers in Halo 2 is awesome.
