So I decided to start my own dedicated server on one of my home pc's to try it out you know. The first thing that runs through my head is "hey, maybe I can finally get a decent ping!" So I start the server on machine A) and join it on machine B). I get into the server/game and my ping is 33. That's really good for halo PC, I know. But I just kind of expected my ping to be, well...0. Especially seeing as how Machines A) and B) are about 2 feet away from each other. I know all about the lag and whatnot in HPC but is the game really just that bad with its online play? To give me a ping above 5-15 on very close proximity server/client machines? I tried to make a simple LAN game to see how things would go then, but since I don't have 2 diff. copies of the game it wouldn't let me join.

Anybody else try this before? Anybody have any experience with HPC LAN servers? (In the same building/room preferably)

Don't think you can have a ping between 0 and 33 under normal circumstances. Also, I think the server has to go to gamespy, then back to your comp, but I'm not sure about the workings of halo DSs.

Lowest ping you are going to get is a 33 on a dedicated server. However this is not your true ping but just how halo reports it. In reality your ping is somewhere around 0 since your playing on the same computer that your hosting on.

There is more technical explination to all of this but i don't feel like giving it since it involves using politics, computer science, quantum mechanics, and a hamster.

The bungie.net community is the halo PC community that is renowned for being unbelieveably sucky.

Actually I pinged as low as about 16 on the old Bungie dedis located about 25 minutes from my house. Those were the days...

The 33 ping is displayed as a result of Halo's netcode (won't go into specifics).

It is possible to go lower if you have a really low ping, but there we go.
