Bring Back Rocket Race!!!

Posted by: Minutes Man
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that it's because MS doesn't want to waste resources bringing GFWL up to par with Xbox Live. The client isn't as popular as Steam. It's not the operating system on your computer either, but the 360 essentially runs on Live. You don't need parties on GFWL because you would hardly ever talk with someone you weren't playing with. The 360 doesn't have apps like Skype (only one I could think of) that allow you to talk with multiple people at once, so it needs the party system. Even now, it's limited to, what, 8 people? For GFWL to successfully integrate all the things that Xbox Live does, it would have to be a standalone program or a part of the game explorer. It's not impossible, just unlikely.

The only compatibility issues between consoles and PCs involve coding, and that's been a problem since the first console. Performance isn't a concern either. PCs are upgradeable, consoles are not. I can't just open up my 360 and swap out the processor for a core I7. Yes, PCs cost more, but you can do more with them. I'd like to see you fire up a Wii and write your 5 page English essay using only the Wii-mote.

Well actually, you can attach keyboards to all three consoles and for the PS3 you can even attach a mouse to it.

And for the PS3, I could write my 5 page English essay on it using the web browser and an online word processor like Google Docs.

And as far as I know, I believe Xbox Live is more popular than Steam. And a lot of the limitations of Xbox Live are because it still supports the original xbox live architecture. You may have heard rumors floating around that Microsoft is considering shutting down Xbox Live for Halo 2 and all other original xbox games. Original Xbox games are what holds back newer features on the 360 such as having more than 100 friends.

And as for the party chat, i feel that 8 people is enough because I rarely go above 5 people in party chat.

And it's not true that consoles aren't upgradeable. With the exception of the Wii, the hard drives of the consoles can be upgraded. The firmware and the OS can also be upgraded. Even the hardware can be upgraded. Newer Xbox 360's have an extra fan and heatsink to prevent the 360 from overheating. The new 360's also have a new type of motherboard which is better than the old ones. And in the case of the PS3, consoles are also downgradeable.

But unfortunately, console upgrades are only carried out by the companies that manufacture them. You can't upgrade consoles by yourself. And Microsoft doesn't usually do huge hardware upgrades to the 360 cause they still want all the consoles to be consistent so that no one player will have an advantage because they have a faster and better graphics card.

And as for PC's, I'm pretty sure you can't upgrade the CPU either without buying a new motherboard. It's not like if you have a Pentium 3 PC, you can swap that for a Core 2 Duo.

Upgrading a HD is not upgrading. That is like saying you got a new vacuum cleaner because the bag that all the dirt goes in is new. Buying a new console with new hardware is not upgrading it, it is getting a new one. The point he was making is that you cannot do it yourself, thus, not really "upgradable" at all.

only 8? maybe the voice chat service on XBL can only handle the screams of eight 13 year olds using mics at the same time. I use vent for talking with people as I play games, we have up to 16 people. Yes, the WHOLE 16 player server can be in the vent server talking to each other and playing at the same time! AMAZING!

Yeah. That's right. I don't have a 50 in H3. I never got Onyx in Reach. If a game sucks too much, I won't even bother trying for such trivial "accolades". Besides, I've done way more things that take far more skill and talent than anything that can be done in a video game.

Yeah, but it's almost useless for the Xbox and Wii. Unless you're playing FFXI, and seriously, who plays that game?

You could do that easier on a PC. And print it!

And as far as I know, I believe Xbox Live is more popular than Steam.

If it is (and I have my doubts about that statement, considering Steam is used for many of the most popular PC games out right now), it would be because Xbox LIVE is the ONLY option for online gaming on that console. Not the case with PC, where the options for online gaming are more than a person could count.

My clan has been limited on more than one occasion by the 8-person limit. It sucks compared to Vent, TS, and Xfire. Admit it, and we can move on.

Yeah, but can you upgrade an Xbox 360 or PS3 with a new video card, RAM, or processor? And by you, I mean the consumer.

...Exactly.

Ignore the fact that the PS3 has better graphics capabilities. Yeah, go ahead and throw that thought out the window.

*facepalm*

Did I not say that if you're a console kid who doesn't know wtf he's talking about, stfu about any topic related to PCs? Did you even bother to do any research on the subject?

Lemme lay it down for ya. Certain processors are made for certain Sockets. If the Sockets match up, the processor can be upgraded. For example, my processor is an AMD Phenom 3400. If I wanted to, I could upgrade to any processor that uses Socket AM2+. With AMD's architecture, I could even move on to socket AM3. Though I wouldn't reap the rewards of having a mobo with an AM3 socket in it, it would still be an upgrade.

Same with Intels. If a person with a Pentium 4 wanted to make the move from a 2GHz P4 to a 3.8GHz P4 (which would be a pretty big upgrade), all he'd have to do is find the one that matches his Socket type.

Well the same could theoretically apply to consoles where if Microsoft made a new CPU, for the 360, they'd incorporate it into all future 360's. And I don't care if PS3 has better graphics are not. I'm talkin about the 360's having the same graphics for every system.

No, as consoles are made the same with same cpu and same gpu for compatability reasons.
And the only upgrades they do are shrinking the components, for lower cost, less heat, and "slim versions"

No, consoles today are very similar to PC's in many ways. There's no reason why upgrading a console is impossible without making everything incompatible.

Not entirely true. For example, Nintendo upgraded the processor in the DSi to allow it to utilize features that the Lite and classic DS couldn't.

Upgrading components doesn't always impact compatibility for older games.

We are nearing the 3 year mark for halo 3. With some luck they will begin a port soon. I just wish they'd have announced it by now. I was expecting it to be released just before ODST like they did with halo 2 vista and halo 3. I don't doubt they will port it, its simple a matter of when they will port it.

Actually we are nearing the 2 year mark of Halo 3. The game came out in 2007 and it's 2009 now.

Yes, if Microsoft made a new CPU they'd incorporate it into future 360's. I don't see that as an upgrade because you can't go to Wal Mart to buy the CPU and put it inside your console in the comfort of your living room. You can't even send it to Microsoft and have them put it in. In fact, if you wanted to "upgrade" to a newer CPU you'd have to buy a brand new console. Look at how fast Intel and AMD release new CPUs. Would you be willing to buy a new console every time a 2 Ghz. faster CPU came out? I'm sure Microsoft would appreciate your business.

The bottom line is that consoles are designed for easy access. All you have to do with a console is plug it into the wall and the TV, and you're ready to go. Not everyone in the world knows how to build a computer, and console manufacturers realize this. If consoles were upgradeable like computers are you'd have five year old kids frying their 360s and themselves. Warranties would be non-existent and there would be so many lawsuits that games would be at least $100 just to pay for court fees.

Actually, you can send your 360 to Microsoft and they'd upgrade your motherboard depending on what date your console was manufactured. They will only do this though if you're 360 is in need of repair like if it got the red rings. Once you send it in, they'll either give you a new motherboard or they'll add another heatsink to the 360.

But yeah, other than that, the 360 isn't really upgradeable although you can attach peripherals to it such as keyboards, webcams, and an upcoming motion sensing camera known as Project Natal. So in a way, you could upgrade the 360 externally with USB attachments.

It technically could be upgrading the 360 though because you're expanding the capabilities of the Xbox 360. Such as Project Natal which upgrades the 360 into the same motion sensing console category as the Wii & PS3.

Aww that means the 360 loses to the Wii in the motion sensor category... As a console fan, that's very devastating news to me.

No, you arent getting the point.
Natal is something that plugs in to the 360, it is not say a new system or even a hardware update like the dsi, gbc and wii were.

Now one company treid to make it so you could update your old console so it had new graphics, but it flopped. It was called the SEGA 32X. And also, the n64 had a Expansion pak that was 4 mb of ram, but only a few games used it.

I think he's referring to Majora's Mask and The World is Not Enough, the former of which required the Expansion Pak. As did Conker and Perfect Dark.
