You also need to realize PC gamers are used to making maps using the Unreal Editor and SDK. Most people would rather see new maps instead of variation of Foundry and Sandbox with limited options.

Yeah. That's right. I don't have a 50 in H3. I never got Onyx in Reach. If a game sucks too much, I won't even bother trying for such trivial "accolades". Besides, I've done way more things that take far more skill and talent than anything that can be done in a video game.

The map editor that Halo 3 already has is meant to be simple so anyone can make their own maps.

As a result, 99% of the crap the users have created is.. well, just that. Crap.

Posted by: General Heed
As for the server browser, it kind of already exists where your friends and recent players on xbox live can join through the friends list.

It doesn't work that way in PC land. Servers don't just house games in PC gaming; They house communities, clans, ect. People join those servers because they know they'll almost always have a good time, and the atmosphere is tailored to their gaming experience. They jump in the server, meet other regulars, usually find a few people in there that they know, and frag away. You don't get that if the game revolves around matchmaking.

Posted by: General Heed
But overall, Halo 3 doesn't really need a server browser. What it needs is an effective matchmaking ranking system on the PC which most PC games usually don't have.

There really hasn't been any NEED for one.

Posted by: General Heed
When it comes to games like Halo 3, having a server list will require several pages of servers since thousands of people play Halo 3 everyday. That's kind of the reason why on the Xbox 360, most games don't use the server browser because it would overflow and prevent players from finding a good game.

That's what filters were made for. ;)

Posted by: General Heed
But, since Games For Windows Live works a bit differently than Xbox Live, I can see why a server browser would be required.

GfWL has nothing to do with it. If H3PC were to be released, it would be a PC FPS. Having a PC FPS without a server browser? There's no point.

Posted by: General Heed
On Xbox Live, all online games are hosted by Microsoft's servers located in Redmond, Washington. It's basically a unified service.

The list is. The games themselves are hosted by a player in the game, utilizing netcode optimized for that kind of play. Those optimizations don't come close to the usability that the server-client system present ion PC games gives us.

Posted by: General Heed
In Games For Windows Live, you typically host your own server like most PC games which is why they have a server browser.

Wrong. You hardly EVER host your own server if you're a PC FPS player. There's no point. A single user's connection wouldn't be able to hold the 16+ players in a CS:S game, let alone the 64 players in a Battlefield 2 game. A server does this, with far less lag than even Xbox LIVE.

Posted by: General Heed
But in my opinion, PC online multiplayer should also be hosted 100% by Microsoft instead of individuals. That will usually reduce lag a bit and allows for better online features.

That'd be a terrible idea. If PC gaming ended up like that, a lot of the experiences PC gamers are PC gamers for would disappear. Not only that, but Microsoft would end up charging for their service. And paying for a PC FPS's online play (with very few exceptions) is something the PC gaming community is NOT about to do, which is one of the reasons H2V sold badly.

And it certainly wouldn't have "less lag." I get a ping of 20 in my favorite Source game servers. I can guarantee that wouldn't happen if Microsoft ran the PC gaming world.

Well online gaming hasn't evolved.I mean there is...lag and connection problems or low ping and the game is not available to those who have low ping.

I very rarely encounter low ping in a PC FPS. And when I do, it's usually on my end, such as someone else in the house downloading or loading a million YouTube videos.

Actually if Microsoft controlled online PC gaming, they wouldn't charge for it. In fact, Microsoft made Games For Windows Live completely free. So there is no difference between a gold and silver account. Unfortunately, Xbox Live members still have to pay which kind of isn't fair. But yeah, online is free for Games For Windows Live.

It is NOW. Upon its conception, it still required a gold account for most online features. It was made free not too long ago, well after the release of Halo 2 Vista and Gears of War PC. And the service is still inferior and buggy compared to other services, such as Xfire and Steam (Jacob G would disagree, but WTF does he know?).

All of this is why most developers that develop good PC titles choose not to use GfWL, oftentimes choosing Steam instead for distribution and support.

The most recent PC games I've bought would be Halo 2 Vista. Other than that, I'm mostly a classic PC gamer. I usually play games such as MechWarrior. I do occasionally play Halo 1, Call of Duty 4, and Stubbs the Zombie on PC sometimes. But since I have those games on the Xbox, I don't play them on PC that much.

Agh get out, I respect the Mechwarrior, but basing your opinion that match making would do is making me want to find you and slap you.
You play CoD 4 too! Even occaisionally the server browser is invaluable, you feel like joining a high ping server where you will be mercilessly killed for the duration?
I'm no masochist so my answer would be no, and unless your a masochist you would agree.
On top of being able to sort by any number of filters having privately operated dedicated servers is beyond just having a good low ping arena to play in. More often than no these servers are laden with modifications to the base games.
Have you any idea what the true scope of modifications on the PC is like?
Games that have far outlasted their expected popularity curve are living still due to modifications that aren't your everyday 'hacks' on XBL.
I'm talking about full blooded changing the very balance of the game modification here, don't believe me?
http://www.moddb.com/
Look around for your favourite games, mods a plenty even for the classics.
But I digress, I expect most people wandering around on a PC forum would know this, but my point here is if you havn't played any PC game with a proper browser and havn't played around in different servers with their own quirks it is completely unfair to say that PC games have no need for a server browser.

EDIT:
And a corporately run server would do anything BUT reduce pings, if your like me and from Australia the ping time to American servers is in the 300s STANDARD and those servers are mostly around the coasts, if M$ took over the servers, how high up do you think that figure will go?

I actually think mods are stupid. There really is no point in using them. Plus, on PC's a lot of hackers use mods to cheat in games. They use things such as trainers, aimbots, and etc. Which is a reason why ranked games on the PC won't work because too many people would cheat to boost their rank. That is a reason I prefer consoles because they have all these security locks to preventing hacking and tampering. And if someone does somehow manage to hack, they'll get banned for good. So on a console, I can join a game feeling assured that it will be a fair match and that I won't be targeted by an aim bot. So that's why I prefer consoles. And that's also why I think PC games need to be reformed. The PC community needs change. It's not a matter of whether it's possible or not. The answer is yes we can. We need to merge the console and pc worlds together to form a seamless equal link. I have a dream where console and pc gamers are united as one. A new community called "Video Gamers".

There we have it. Confirmation that he's a console gamer and knows pretty much nothing about PC gaming.

Posted by: General Heed
Plus, on PC's a lot of hackers use mods to cheat in games. They use things such as trainers, aimbots, and etc.

There's a distinct difference between mods and hacks. The things you listed are hacks. In console gaming, cheats are referred to as "mods" because using them involves modding the console. Doesn't work that way in PC land. Cheats are called "hacks" in PC gaming because they either hack the software code to alter their gameplay (as seen in the use of an aimbot or a trainer), or spoof packets that alter serv/client packet reception (an example of this would be a particular Halo PC speedhack). "Mods" in PC are alterations to game, ranging from simple changes to full-blown total conversions, that are beneficial to the entire community of said game.

I hope this was educational for you.

Posted by: General Heed
Which is a reason why ranked games on the PC won't work because too many people would cheat to boost their rank.

Anti-cheat programs exist for a reason. PunkBuster, Valve Anti-Cheat, GameGuard, ect. Ranked play on PC is more possible on the PC than you'd know. Why else would they have leagues for games like CS:S (involving FPS players that could mop the floor with console gaming's precious MLG "pros," I might add)?

Posted by: General Heed
That is a reason I prefer consoles because they have all these security locks to preventing hacking and tampering. And if someone does somehow manage to hack, they'll get banned for good.

Or as long as it takes for them to buy an Xbox Arcade and grab a new Gamertag. And we all know how losers with nothing better to do than sit on their mom's couch and play Halo for 16 hours a day love making 5+ LIVE accounts just for that game.

Posted by: General Heed
So on a console, I can join a game feeling assured that it will be a fair match and that I won't be targeted by an aim bot.

That can happen on the PC as well. See above.

Posted by: General Heed
And that's also why I think PC games need to be reformed. The PC community needs change.

Oh. My. God. Did you just beat Covenant for the "Dumbest Statement Ever" award?

The PC gaming community is far better than anything you'd see on Xbox LIVE. Gaming communities (with the exception of a few games, notably Halo PC) are far better than that 10-year-old wanna-be-pro infested bulge of swill that is the Xbox LIVE community. In a PC gaming community, I can play numerous games with the same players, almost nobody gives anyone crap, and all is well.

But when I play Halo 3, all that changes, and I find myself Avoiding between 4-8 players a game simply because I am so annoyed with a wanna-be-pro trash talker that won't stafoo, or some kid yelling at his mom to get him a soda, or incessantly chatting, or singing, or thinking the damn sticky grenade is some sort of team-healing medkit.

The PC gaming community, though not perfect, is far better than the travesty of gaming called Xbox LIVE. NEVAR FORGET!

Halo 2 Vista does not bridge the gap between PC and Console Games. While it does offer the new "Tray'nPlay" feature that lets you play the game right away like a console, it is still far from a seamless link. A true game that bridges the gap would have to allow cross-platform play and offer the same features. Cross-Platform multiplayer games are still quite rare at the moment.

I am more than positive that console gamers will be more than capable at beating PC gamers. I can't remember exactly, but when that game Lost Planet came out for PC, it had cross-platform abilities and the entire night it came out was a console vs. pc competition and I believe the stats were in favor of the console gamers. This is the same for another cross-platform games called Shadowrun where the console gamers tended to do a little better than PC gamers. It is a close match between console and pc gamers. That's all I have to say. It's close.

Lost Planet? What a crap example. Why would a PC gamer play that when there are far better options out there?

If Valve had made TF2 cross-platform, we'd be watching console gamers getting utterly destroyed. There would be nothing "close" about it. Same deal with UT3. And L4D.

You can't play the most casual of games and think you're pro. That's like pretending to be "kinda like" an MLG pro in H2V.

Ok, this is getting out of hand, now this is turning into pc vs 360 flamewar. To the one who doesnt know a lot about pc gaming, general heed, go play some pc games like Orange box, and try using a map editor for different games as well. And also, i KNOW some who is in mlg with a 360 game (r6v2) and that person is also a master at halo 2 xbox, unlike most of the people who play h2v and do mlg halo 2 xbox types

And also, there was a cross platform "ONLY ON VISTA AND 360" fps (Shadowrun) where controls were tweaked to balance out aganst pc gamers.

Shadowrun wasn't worth playing on the PC. One of those games that wasn't up to par with PC gaming expectations. Sucks, cause I had high hopes for that game, too.

Halo 2? Why bother being a "master" at a game that's so noobified? It's much more rewarding to be good at a game that actually requires skill to play effectively. Let's see an MLG "pro" swipe-snipe me in a game that doesn't have massive hitboxes or aim assist. ;)

1. I have Fortress Forever (less n00by and more hard than tf2, where people blare loud music and stand and do nothing, and this is on a server that is not empty or full (kicked due to slot reservation)) and it does take skill but if you play Halo 2 XBOX and get your circle up, you can find some pros.
And also, i mean the xbox version, without aimbots and that crap.

2. I just mentioned shadowrun, and i havent ever played it as it got rated worse than h2v by game magazines.

3. If you are gonna bash halo 2, do it here:

4. Halo 2 has less jerks and people who threaten you just because you beat them in a game than halo 3 (that happened to my bro in halo 3)

You know, there's a lot more to gaming than just sitting in a hunched position in front of a tiny computer monitor trying to click on virtual pixels thinking you have skill at it.

Everyone has forgotten the true purpose of gaming. Remember what it was like back during the era of classic games? I didn't see any competitive game leagues back during super mario bros in the 1990's. Video games are meant to be a form of entertainment. It's for you to enjoy and relax after a long hard day. Not spend hours in front of the screen trying to see who can point and click faster. Perhaps you're right that PC gamers could beat console gamers. But that's kind of saying something about PC gamers. You guys spend so much time focusing on your PC games. True, there are some console gamers that do the same. But a lot of console gamers play for FUN. That's what gaming is all about.

Now with online gaming, it adds more for people to do. It allows you to play casually with other friends and socialize (which is the purpose of social playlists in Halo 3). You can tell by my rank in Halo 3 that I'm not a competitive gamer. I'm more of a casual one that spends more time in custom games than matchmaking.

Now I still prefer console games no matter what. It clearly has the most casual games in its Xbox Live Arcade. Throughout the history of gaming consoles have always had better casual games. Which is kind of why the Wii was made. I like a little competition every now and then. But competing to see who can get the highest rank and most headshots is just stupid.

1. In 1990, they had the Nintendo world championships where there were 3 games, mario, some racing game, and tetris and they had so much time to compete to win. And they had tourneys of Street Fighter II in the 90s and also, Daytona USA was big as well later on in the 90s. And there were lan tourneys in DOOM (PC gamers) and Marathon (Mac gamers and Bungie gamers) in the 90s.

2. I am not just some causal one, i play to compete to win.

3. PC Games like the sims and spore are casual, along with those 10 dollar budget titels.

4. I know another crazy name for gears: Beers Of WAR!

5. Mods change games. Like counter strike and fortress forever are mods. Hacks are speedhacks, jumphacks, wallhacks, that stuff. And ppl boost on halo 3. And pcs have security stuff like gameguard or punkbuster or vac.
