Just a quick question, about how often do you normally have your computer on, trying to determine if its the fan or just the computer "thinking" either way its not a software problem so running virus scans and such won't fix it.... it's a hardware thing, and it doesn't even nessecarily mean it's a bad thing... loud noises usually means the computer is processing data .... or the fan(s) is/are on and trying to cool down the computer............

The ball bearings on your harddrive could be wearing out, causing a grating noise. If you are being so general in description people can't help you very much. Say if it sounds like the fans or more internal, and compare it to common sounds people hear, like using a sraw on a nearly empty glass

Heyyo,

Could be your monitor actually. Mine does it and it sucks. I'm actually trading it in.. gonna get a good deal outta this. $50 cdn for a 19" monitor with a minor blemish on the screen (which's why the price is good) so I'm gonna trade in my 15" lg peice of crap for aboot $20cdn, pay $40 cdn maybe for repairs.. so I'm looking at maybe $70 cdn total for it. New it would've been easily over $140 CDN, so half price is sweet. ;)

It is probably your harddrive or a fan. Does it sound like a be buzz or like a rattle noise? Your CD ROM drive can make noises if its old, mine does and it annoys me. It also might be that you have something up against your computer so when it vibrates it makes a noise. Speakers, moniters, bottles,CD racks, wires and stuff like that.

um let me ask yo one question. is the noise coming from your speakers or your actual computer. I had that kind of thing just after i installed my sound card. then i re-installed its drivers and it was fine. if its coming from the case id look inside it or turn it on without the shell on so you can hear or see what the problem is.

Mine does that if I play halo for a long time but that's just the fans so I doubt it's anything bad. I haven't dusted the inside of my computer since mid January but I dust the outside a lot.

some mobos (like my moms compaq's mobo) will speed the cpu fan up when the cpu gets hotter, causng a sound kind of like buzzing. It does it while booting, and every now and then when you are running a lot of programs.

although, my chipset fan makes a buzzing noise from rubbing against something, or the bearing worn out, or somethiing, i dont know what, but it goes way after a litle while never to return until i leave the compy off for a while. its all right, though, i am getting a new mobo very soon :D

Heyyo,

Where exactly is the sound coming from? Try tuning off your monitor, if it still makes sound try your speakers. If the sound stops when you turn off either that's your prob.

If it's the speakers you probably need better drivers (newer ain't always better, this's the case with my audigy gamer).

If it's from your comp it could be a bad fan. try disconnecting some case fans (NOT the cpu fan, for the love of jebus, not the cpu fan) and see if the sound stops.

A good way to try n' help you pinpoint the place where the sound's coming from is start the comp up with the side of the case opened. if you think it's froming from a fan? try holding it down. Usually this's teh case with cpu fans. They're loose, or the rotar's covered with dust, and you need to unclog it.

If it's coming from the back it could be maybe your power supply fan but don't take this advice too seriously because I'm not too tech savvy if you get me.
