Here's my theory. The covenant absorb the brutes. The brutes roll in acting all big and bad. The prophets recognize their great potential, and so the brutes become the new favorite children of the covies (elevated above the elites). The elites however feel a tad displaced and are rather put out. They feel betrayed and thus turn coats. Therefore, the master chief and the elites have a common enemy and this is how the covenant invasion is repelled. From what I've read this postulate wouldn't oppose any factual information to date. This would allow for a plot twist (teaming up with the elites), and some interesting AI involvement. Thoughts?

Also, will I disappear if I guess correct? Bungie seems a bit too tight lipped not to behave like the CIA.

Uh-NO!

I truly doubt Bungie will have any sort of betrayl on the Covenant end of that sort. Plus the Brutes have been inside the Covenant for a long time. They'd have to be in order to be made Temple Guards.

What do you mean you have to write some more? Are you getting paid? Or, did you merely mean you were going to write some more. I'd surely do it for some moola.

I haven't heard that the brutes have in fact been in the covenant for a long time. In fact, I've heard the opposite but not certain whether either has been confirmed.

Also with regards to it being far fetched. To that I say, Exactly.

that actually seems very possible. in the last chapter of First Strike, it said the grand poohbah (sp?) of the prophets let a brute into his chamber for the first time and made the elite protectors leave. it also said the prophet admired the brute's strength and said that they could tear a hunter in half. so it would make sense that the elites would be jealous of the brutes social position. but the part about elites joining humans is a little iffy. they hate humans and think of them as a lower being, like the grunts. but maybe they would have a different reaction to the MC, because he is much better than the normal human, and has killed many elites, so maybe they will respect him a little. we will just have to wait and see

the Brutes had to have been with the Covenant for a while because they are ceremonial guards, and the Covenant are all religious so their temples must be very important,so they have elite guards(not Elites) in there, not just lowly Grunts and Jackals.

Indeed, perhaps they're more inclined to join ranks if it were a true alliance (not serving under the prophets) and if the MC were the liaison. I'm sure after murdering a few elites they don't think of him as merely a grunt.

i think that the story will scale out to be in alot of covert op missions, considering how we dont have the forces to launch a full scale assault, since they have now found earth,

There were 300 Elite Imperial Guards inside there. It also said that the Elites were offended by the Brute being so close to the Prophet of High Truth.

Early a copy of Cortana even said that the Brutes were Temple Gaurds and nothing else. Not ceremonial, but Temple. There is a difference.

Another thing where I say the Brutes are probably old in the Covenant ranks.

The UNSC is just finding out about these other species within the Covenant ranks. From 2525 to 2552 all we fought were Grunts and Jackals. It was not until July of 2552 on Sigma Octanus IV that we saw our first Hunter or Engineer. And it was not until the Fall of Reach that we saw our first Elite.

Right now (in 2552) the Covenant are just finally pulling back the stops on their higher ranked units is all they are doing. They are rolling out the higher, and I am assuming, the races that are getting fed up with the Grunts and Jackals getting all the kills.

Sounds reasonable. I'll submit to you then that the elites are jealous. Or fed up with the preferential treatment toward the brutes. Would that suit your claim that the brutes are long time members? I'm going to hang onto my elite changing flag theory.

i may be wrong but i don't think that we were just fighting grunts and jackals in the beginning, i'm pretty sure that there were hunters and elites too. if it was just grunts and jackals, the marines are even more pathetic than i thought

Submit as you will, for when the time comes and the Tru7h is exposed we will all stand equal in the eyes of Bungie. Pawns that will be fed Pizza and their ever flowing knowledge of their little games' universe.

No one is disputing how pathetic the marines are (or rather were in Halo: CE). They're pretty much fleshy shields to me.

brutes couldn't have been in the Covenant for a long time because the Elites and prophets were the 2 original races to form the Covenant

Trust me, this is true. It clearly states in each instance that this is true. After Sigma Octanus IV the Spartans were debriefed on their exsistance and the UNSC added them to their known knowledge of the Covenant ranks. They also did likewise for the Engineers. Then they even speculated on another " Elite " race that could be in exsistance. When the first Elites then appeared on the Circumference Space Station above Reach the Chief thought this more or less. " So this was an Elite, it was time t see what this new form of Covenant threat could do. "

Elites were introduced then, Hunters and Engineers at Sigma Octanus IV and Grunts + Jackals between 2525 and 2552.

And Brutes could have been in for a long time. The Covenant empire is huge. There is no knowing how long it has been around, but judging by its size there is sufficent evidence that the Brutes have been aoart of the Covenant for a long ass time. Maybe not since the beginning, but definitely in for a long time.
