Help?

You can't have a custom avatar that you made all for yourself, unless you are a Bungie employee or a moderator. You can only select one from the default avatars list. To change your avatar to one from there, click on "My Settings" on the top bar (where it says "Welcome mojonation1487!"), then click on "Avatar". From there you can browse through 3 pages of avatars to choose from.

However, you can submit your own custom avatar for consideration for public use. It has to be 90 x 90 pixels, in GIF format, and no more than 20 KB in size. Currently there is an avatar contest, with the chance to win some nice prizes, and you can find more information there.

One more thing, your avatar must be Bungie-related, and not use material that is copyright of any entity other than Bungie/Microsoft.

Of course, one of the prizes is being able to use a custom avatar.

Are you sure you can use a custom avatar if you win? I quote from stosh's original post:

What YOU can win:

Most contests have a first, second and third place prizes. That's lame.
We're going to have seven:

1. Mehve artwork "Pardon our Hegemony", Bungie.net t-shirt and the ability to use an approved custom avatar on Bungie.net
2: Mehve drawing "Bless this Mess", signed + Bungie.net t-shirt
3: Mehve drawing "Gone Fishing", signed + Bungie.net t-shirt
4. Limited edition E3 Halo2 mylar print signed by artist Eddie Smith + Bungie.net t-shirt
5: Game Informer Magazine cover artwork signed by artist Eddie Smith + Bungie.net t-shirt
6: Halo 2 2003 Calendar - signed by members of Bungie + Bungie.net t-shirt
7: Exclusive E3 2004 Halo 2 mini Master Chief figure + Bungie.net
t-shirt

(Mehve drawings are original sketches used to create Bungie.net custom error pages)

In addition to the seven prize places above, we are also going to hold two very special contest categories. One to encourage creativity and originality, and the other we made just to get EVERYONE to participate.

Whomever creates the avatar which best shows the use of hand drawn art (digital or traditional) will receive a custom drawing of anything they desire from B.net's very own artist, Lorraine Mclee's. (Don't ask her draw anything weird though, ok? -- She reserves the right to overrule whatever the winner asks for and draw her own picture)

~and~

The user who submits the worst absolute avatar we receive will win a very special and extremely rare hand drawn picture of 'Mister Chief' by the bungie's content boy himself, Frank O'Conner! It will be framed!

I didn't read anything about a custom avatar. Maybe that was added later (I haven't been keeping track of that thread).
