#1 This is NOT a petition for membership, this is a petition for help in ALL the chapters of the Seventh Column so I believe it belongs here.

I have noticed a stunning trend with Chapters, even now.
They are founded, and forgotten. They may get a few members and still fall defunct.
I wish to initiate a plan for all the chapters that are rapidly decaying despite great potential. Through Sharing of Info, Articles, News, Events, Ideas and the like. I have posted the original petition here.. Sorry, Yoozel but yours was the strongest Chapter I belong to, and I want to get this message to as many people as possible.

I invite anyone with ideas on ways to improve the Seventh Column's Chapters (as a Whole) PM me and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

-S

Just so you're aware, a large percentage of chapters, namely all the defunct, abandonned ones, are going to be deleted with the coming of the New Hotness.

  • 06.29.2004 11:37 AM PDT

This whole topic probably would be a good idea to discuss in The Septagon, as long as it doesn't degrade into a "join my chapter" fest.

Absolutely agreed goweb, that is not my intention, all of my targets already belong to chapters in fact, I merely wish to improve communications between chapters. That's why I asked for PM's instead of a couched attempt to bring people to the chapter.

The first thing I do want however, is a list, by PM please, of Chapters interested in this project. If you do not wish to use PM, or you have more ideas you wish to share with me or others, send me an email at gamejunkiejim@yahoo.com and I promise to read all of them.

I will begin to list the joining chapters in the classifieds for purposes of rallying new membership, at a later date. Please do not respond to this post with a Chapter link, as I will assume you are only in this in a bid for membership. And you will be relegated to the bottom of the pile, as it were... I would like to speak with a moderator at a later date to Lock & Sticky that post, so only approved groups may use it.

Yo Halo53, I'm real happy for you and I'ma let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best bungie.net profiles of all time. OF ALL TIME!

So... wait, do you want people who need help with their chapter to pm you or people who want to help other chapters pm you?

  • 06.29.2004 1:05 PM PDT

The War will wage forever; though with it's fury comes a peace that you will never know here.

I was actually wondering about the whole Chapter Deletion thing. Once a chapter is deleted at the coming of the 'New Hotness', will members be able to create a chapter with the same name?

Mainly, because many of the now defunct chapters have some sweet names that someone will want to use at a later date. If no one's using the name, and someone else wants the name, wouldnt it make more sense to let them have it?

  • 06.29.2004 1:19 PM PDT

I think that we really need to talk about how to drive people to the Column in the first place.

  • 06.29.2004 1:43 PM PDT

The War will wage forever; though with it's fury comes a peace that you will never know here.

Why not just tell people how great it is?

Of course, I started becoming more active in the Seventh Column when I actually went to check it out. After about a week of looking at chapters, I thought that the whole chapter aspect of Bnet was really cool. So, consequently, that's how I got driven to the Column.

I think what we might want to actually TELL people how great the Column. I havent seen a post explaining how awesome the Column is, as well as what and why makes the Column so awesome. I suggest that rather than go into a direct spamming frenzy of 'Join the Column because it's awesome' (which sounds like a bad chapter advertisment), we could try and make mention of the Column and it's chapters in the other forums when we're responding to a post. For example, when discussing something like Halo 2 ideas, someone could say: '

Hey, I learned [insert idea here] from a chapter on the Seventh Column. Isnt that sweet? Hell, chapters are full of great ideas!"

That would be a way to try to bring people to the Column. What do you guys think?

To answer Halo53, simple answer? Both.

Both the struggling chapters that need help with activity. Sharing news, and personally written info (guides, etc.) and anything else you could possibly think of. And the Blossoming Chapters that have the manpower, but may have hit a wall. Both of these groups could work together for mutual benefit.

The Seventh Column was concieved (IMHO) to bring fans of Bungie together, and I want to help it do that better.

The reason for the post idea, is what will help the Seventh Column get the exposure it needs. Right now the classifieds have been overrun with the Clan hopefuls, and the few that actually put a Chapter Ad on the forum are getting quickly dropped off the page, and no one see their ads. This is why I asked for a sticky. But I want it locked, to ensure that it gets used for it's intended purpose. No spamming the chapter, no need to 'bump' because it's sticky, and no unrelated topics. I hold nothing against the clans, but I think that the chapters should have a chance to actually use the forum that was created for them. This will ensure fair posting as well, since a mod would have to make the post.

Maraxus and goweb's ideas are perfect too, as we could use that sticky post to explain what the purpose of the chapters are as well...

goweb could even make the first post ;)

P.S. goweb I keep wanting to capitalize your name- It's playing hell with my typing...

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

Lets all think of economics, for a moment, shall we?

There are so many defunct chapters simply because of that fact: There are so many of them.

Chapters need to be unique. Half the chapters I have seen all base themselves around basically the same thing. With all the chapters being close to the same (save names and quotes), there are only a few that really make it. They can compete. Just like good corporations, those few offer really great "deals" (by deals I mean features), which makes them "better" than the others (in their own ways). If all chapters are the same, there's no point in joining them if you're already part of another...

That, and people need to maintain interest... I've seen lots of chapters do really great in their beginnings, then die down because people (like me) forget about them...

I'm not sure if anything can really be done to help chapters...

Oh, and Goweb, your avatar's pretty damn cool, by the way.

Lets all think of economics, for a moment, shall we?

Economics? There is a profit to these things? Well, well, well

Not in terms of money, no... economics refers to more than just cash exchanges though. (Barter economies, for instance.) But Shai Hulud is refering to the "supply and demand" part of economic theory, I think. There's a glut on the chapter market, driving perceived value of each chapter down.

Bungie could do the cartel move, and cut down on supply to increase the value of each. This is probably a winner, since most of the chapters out there appear to be pining for the fjords.

The other route is for chapter members to offer more in exchange for membership; it looks tough to do though, since it's all voluntary. It can be done though... you could offer training programs for newer players, or unique game types (if you offer a chapter for HEK map users, you've got a big benefit for HaloCE players right there), or Halo-related "quotes of the day", or something like that to make your chapter different from everybody else's.

This is the reason for this project. With enough support, we can make the few chapters that are making the effort great. With a more widespread appeal - while maintaining their individuality. Like I said - We DO need to trim down the number of chapters, but as Shishka pointed out earlier, this will be taken care of with the new system. This project is to recultivate interest in the Seventh Column, and part of that process must be to give incentive for the Chapters that work toward this interest. This doesn't make it a selfless act, but it does earn the Seventh Column more recognition, and would cause it to be more active among everyone. The reason there are so many defunct Chapters is because, after making them, many founders lose interest due to lack of members and/or participation. This project would alleviate some of that strain, for the Chapters that make an effort.

what exactly are you proposing? i dont think anyone except bunige staff could solve all the inactive chapters. what can we do? personally all the defunct chapters dont bother me. i believe (may not be true but stosh told me so i will take the risk) that it is the active chapters that are killing the column! they have so much 'traffic' that they bog the run down column into the ground. so do i give a crap about the inacitve ones? no i dont, and if i did, i dont think there would be anything we could do.

I'm not proposing solving the inactive Chapter 'problem', the only 'problem' I'm trying to solve is that people don't care anymore...
I have a complete plan I have been working on, but it rambles a bit so I'm going to break it up into easy to read posts.

We might as well start here. It's a 7 (of Course) part program.

#1 Sharing News: Any large or pertinent news story would be shared with all the chapters after a period of exclusivity. (24-48 hours or so) Minor news and events should be shared relatively immediately, to help keep all Chapters current with each other.

#2 Chapter Run, Bungie Sponsored: Bungie and Chapter sponsored events would be great for publicity. Especially important with game releases, and holiday sales for games, we could set up a few other holiday, or "Bungie-Specific" dates to set up public events (like the Microsoft Truck that went around a few years back). My personal favorite idea is a fundraiser type Halo2 event, where we would rent out 2 IMAX theaters, one in LA and one in NYC, We then split the screen for 4 people and showcase XBL with the 'squad' in the other city. Video crew the event for publicity, G4 would probably do it , and it would be good publicity for Bungie, Microsoft, and of course the Seventh Column. Individual Chapters could raise money amongst themselves to use in similar but much smaller scale promotion, maybe contacting their local game store, (or the national offices) to set up a public showcase of Bungie Software (As of now read Halo 2, or Halo). If things progress well, we may get local stores to sponsor small tourneys, offering prizes in exchange for publicity, and we would of course advertise the local chapter there as well.

Part 3 and 4 will follow soon, but I have to go to work.

Part #3:
Column wide contests. For anything. Cosmetic modification, accessory building, you name it. For example, I would offer one copy of Halo 2 Limited Edition, Signed by Bungie staff (I buy the disc, they just sign), for the best original accessory related to a Bungie game (PC or XBox, though I'm sure Halo 2 will default) Maybe an autographed Halo Edition XBox ? Who knows, anything is possible after all.

Part #4
Article Sharing. A few chapters do this already, but most of the time membership is required in the other Chapter. This is a bit of work under the current system, but, I believe I have it figured out. Keep a slot open at all times. If you have 15, drop the one that needs your help the least. To share files, join the other Chapter long enough to add the files, then drop it so you can move on to another Chapter that needs the article. If this sounds like too much of a hassle, consider adding a public article database, moderated of course, to share the information. Hopefully the "New Hotness" will make the sharing of information a bit easier.
Personally I love the Gameplay guides, and the interviews. I also believe that Fan Fiction would be a huge hit in this area.

Part 5 and 6 to follow tonight.

Part #5
An inter-Chapter Chat area, a simple IRC or Messenger room, to share ideas, discuss issues, and argue topics that have bearing on the state of the Seventh Column. This would be similar to the Septagon but in real time, and only open to current Chapter founders that maintain some sort of activity once a week, and all Bungie.net Moderators, and all Bungie Employees. This could be scheduled to be open 1 day a week for brainstorming or whatever, and all day long so everyone had a chance to get to it. This is an optional area, but I feel it will make the relationships between the Chapters stronger.

Part #6 Bungie Love. As members of the Seventh Column, we are the true fans of Bungie. Because of this, I believe we should be privy to early information. Not too early, but a first word, maybe 24 hours before they officially release the info. If this arrangement comes to be, and is not abused, it could help ensure a more in depth following of chapter events. I realize this will be one of the hardest things to do, as Bungie would have to trust us not to leak it somewhere else, but I figure, by the time we actually have the information, we would only have 24 hours to use it for our site, and it wouldn't be a leak issue because Bungie would release the info the next day. To make an example, the next game Bungie is going to create for the next Microsoft system - we as members of the Seventh Column should know 24-48 hours before the official announcement, because we deserve to be rewarded for our loyalty.

Part 7 next...

This is the most important part, which is why I saved it for the mystical and powerful number 7.

TEAMWORK

Founders, Members, Moderators, Staff, Everyone must work together and pitch in where applicable. Do your part. Help others who ask.

Share and work together, and I believe we can give the Seventh Column a much needed boost.

Now, for the love of Bungie, let's kick ass and take names!!!

good but complicated ideas, but i cant help noticing something, for a chapter to make me want to join, it has to be differant, and cool with exclusive stuff, so all this sharing will jsut make every chapter in it basically with the same stuff and thus causing more of the problem. the imax therter idea i find a bit tooo large scale for us to organise. the idea of the chat rooms has existed beofre (stosh created soffish chat, and it was popular, i believe it still runs somewhere on a hot line server that i cant access.) we cat make other peoples chapters great, the founder needs to have the idea for the whole direction of the chapter, currently most founders dont have enough new ideas to have thier own chapters stay fresh, how can they give ideas to others to? they all should of thought about what they were going to do with thier chapters before they made it, the ones that have fallen inactive didnt, they jsu thought it would be cool. (if any of the above is incorrect, such as the info about soffish chat, then im sorry.)
