I get this all the time, and it makes the game unplayable in every aspect. I cannot play by leading a shot by up to 4 seconds of running, and then get in a vehicle only to appear 20 yards behind it where I just was.

See link for screenshot I took of the problem, and computer specs are below it.
this is my first post on bungie (very, very awkward forum system by the way) so go easy on me.

1. Specs of interest

AMD Sempron 3500+ 1.99 ghz
1.5 gigs RAM
160 GB HD, 1 drive
ATI Radeon Xpress 200 (Driver 8.17)

XP Home edition. SP2 Pack

halo version 1.08

Broadband connection, using 54mbps wireless connection to router (works fine with other games) not sure how to tell you the up/down stream.

ports are forwarded on router and computer

Firewall is Windows default, with exceptions for everything halo.

Connection Problem. Could be the server, internet connection or the distance between you and where the server is hosted

All my opinion.

It means your computer is having trouble connecting to the server. Whenever I see it, I either lag or get disconnected.

I hope this post gets through, I see a lot of failed attempts today.

Speedtest shows 1660 kb/s DL, 831 kb/s UL
Ping 72 ms, ~150 miles to Calgary, AB server.

Previous speedtests show that my DL speed can range from 970 to 2443, so this isn't very accurate. There was also a day where I was uploading at 8x my download rate..

  • 08.22.2008 2:56 PM PDT

24 and female.

I've seen that icon time and time again, but it depends on which server I'm on at the time and how many people are playing (sometimes I can play with 15 other people and be fine, while other times there's only a few other people and I get that icon). As LoneStaruner said, there are a lot of factors with that connection icon.

I just wanted to know if it's the wireless at fault. I have a limited knowledge of it, because I got off dialup last week after a full 11 years using it.

Could be wireless. Basically what that symbol means is that you are not receiving information from the server, and so the game just assumes that everyone continues doing what they were last doing. (walking forward, shooting, etc.).

Would making a game to make MY ping 0 still show this image then?
Is my internet a good enough speed to run a 10 person match?

On a related note, when I make a match no one joins even if I put them up for hours. I know that there's a good chance people just don't want to even join a match that says it has 1 player in it, but I wonder if people can even see it on the server list.

Thanks for the support so far.

My own website and clan
http://www.xgclan.com

well still its smart to update to sp3.
your computer gets faster from it(a little bit)
and it fixes security holes.(stops viruses, hackers, etc)

you can get service pack 3 aka sp3 for windows xp at windows update(its at the start menu program files in the top normally)

also connect with a cable just to make sure(wireless can boost your ping a bit)
also use filter at the halo server list, select 150< and you should get less server but these servers shouldn't give lag.
if you don't see any servers you are to far from all the halo servers...(north pool or something?)

I just tried it on a friend's (really) highspeed connection, he still warps on US servers but doesn't get that icon to appear at all.

I'm going to download SP3 after I go over what exactly is in it, because a lot of the time updates have been released that need to be patched right away.

Using Xfire, I usually try and load up Canadian servers if I see them. I'm in the middle of Alberta, so connecting to ~150 ping servers shouldn't be a problem.

If you host and other people try to join, instead you will be fine with 0 ping, but they will all have that lost connection symbol and be unable to move.

Your bandwith and ping seem fine, I'm thinking it's your wireless strength that is varying. When you upload/download files, do the speeds vary much and/or drop out? SP3 will do nothing for this...

Depends on the host of the file. I don't see much variation when it's from a webserver, but when it's from , as an example, a p2p client it can vary from 15 kb/s to 90. Speeds don't drop out at all, and when you say "strength" - The adapter is 9 feet below a router, and has to pass through 2x4s and a bookcase. 94% signal strength, and the only time it ever goes offline is short because the repair function (to renew IP, configure DNS, re-enable the network etc) puts it right back online. This only happens maybe twice a week.

Well he doesn't need to, but I'd recommend it.

Edit: I didn't mean he needed it to fix his problem, i mean he just needs to upgrade.

I don't really see SP3 as that necessary at all.

Like I said in my OP, ports are all forwarded and router is configured for gaming mode and such.
Nothing SHOULD be wrong with it, I'm just going to assume that it's a combination of the game (i'm not the only one suffering terrible lag on high speed) and my connection being limited by an adapter...somehow.

actually i thought there was some update to the wireless networking in winxp sp3 and vista sp1.
but i am not 100% sure but you can give it a try.

btw sp3 hasn't got that much bugs...
they have tested it for a long time so it should work.
but for some computers it doesn't(1 of the 10.000 computers or something)

see this: http://blogs.pcworld.com/staffblog/archives/006932.html
