I always wondered that. All of them spell correctly and have good grammar! Did anyone else notice?!

  • 03.11.2005 7:45 AM PDT

Well, you cannot tell other people what to do if they don't respect you. Proper spelling and grammar makes people believe that the person posting is intelligent, therefore leading to respect. But I guess that is just my opinion.

I just find it odd how they have PERFECT spelling and PERFECT grammar.

  • 03.11.2005 7:55 AM PDT

Perfect spelling can be obtained by using a spell-checker. And they don't have perfect grammar, but it's pretty close (as close as necessary when posting on an internet forum). It's also really not that hard when you have a decent education and actually care about spelling properly and being grammatically correct.

Edit: See, I care so much about my spelling that I edited my post to add a y.

So how do you get a spell checker?

  • 03.11.2005 8:04 AM PDT

I have never used a spell checker on one of my posts.

I just have a good vocabulary.

You can get one too, just by reading a few books.

  • 03.11.2005 8:08 AM PDT

Well, if you are using Internet Explorer, you can use IE spell. But if you do not want to use that add-on, you can just copy your post into a word processor and do a spell check.

Start by reading the Halo books then. I mean, everybody should read at least one book a month.

Please! I don't see why everyone reads those books. I never bother because I am not totally "obsessed" with it! I'd rather read a made up story about Halo 2 by me!

  • 03.11.2005 8:38 AM PDT

Well, if you don't want to read the Halo books, I would like to suggest "The Dark Tower" series by Stephen King. It is 7 books and about 4,000 pages long, but it is a damn good read.

Wow, that is way off the original topic.

I never read books! And guess what, I am in the GT program!

Why not? Just because it's the internet is no excuse to speak some other language, such as the commonly used "txt-tlk".

As far as I'm aware, good spelling and grammar come with intelligence, patience and a decent education/willingness to learn. I don't even think some of them are good as far as spelling goes, but they have the patience to look things up to get them right.

I am "smart" if I am in the GT program. It is not that I never read, but I will only do it when I am forced to. Sometimes...I will read a book.

I noticed, so I don't be use -blam!-.
Still, do they have to have perfect grammar?

I would imagine it would be hard holding a position of respect and authority in a community that uses written medium if you have no understanding of how to use it.

I hope that the example they are setting gets through to some of the people around here. I don't think some of them understand how little respect they are afforded if they can't get their messages across by following a few basic rules of language useage.

Well, that would be one of the reasons why they are moderators.

Maybe it does have to be perfect. Maybe...

Having been in such types of programs before - that is not true. Such programs give you opportunities, but are no better than not being in such programs if you don't take advantage of it. While I have known some really incredibly successful people who were in those programs, I also know some of the biggest failures who were also in those programs.

It isn't about how smart you are - it is how you use the talents you have and the opportunities that come your way that counts. Being smart means nothing by itself unless you can communicate for example. Books are a great way to build verbal skills necessary for communication.

That made no sense!

  • 03.11.2005 11:56 AM PDT

I try to use decent spelling and grammar so that people reading my posts can understand me. It's a way of communicating effectively. I have trouble taking someone seriously if they can't even attempt to form a sentence. Sometimes they're also difficult to understand.

For me it has less to do with appearing intelligent or respectable than it does with communicating appropriately for the medium. I believe forum posts and emails should generally be composed, rather than just typed out. That allows the person who reads it to get the most from your message.

By the way, I don't read books for fun. I find it to be a boring entertainment medium. The only kind of reading I typically take part in is educational.

[didn't read the thread, don't bite me if it's been said]

Do the moderators have good spelling in grammar because they're moderators or are they moderators because they have such good spelling and grammar?

I've read about 11 books since Christmas break.
