I really hate to reminisce, but back in the days of the old B.Net, the lone B.Net forum, and the 7ru7h and Reconciliation, one could actually have a mature conversation. Those long years ago, I was 13, and everyone on the forum was older than me, but that did not have a negative effect on my image. People welcomed newbies, and whenever I made a mistake in regards to forum etiquette, I was politely remided of what to do next time, and they sculpted me into another great member of a great community. Now, whenever a forum goer breaks a rule of conduct, the mods are either too lazy or too busy doing other things to deal with it (probaby the latter), and the mature members of the forum are too afraid to offer criticism, because they don't want a seven year old to flame them into submission. Even before the likes of New Mombasa and Zanzibar, when (after many april fools) Bungie launched their new site, someone could still enjoy themselves talking to others in The Underground. You could never, ever have a mature conversation in any of the Forums besides the Septagon nowadays, because every last thread on the front page is spam. Every last thread either starts as or eventually turns into an arguement. Any mature person browsing the forum who starts a valid thread is either ingored completely or is else bumped off the front page by a load of ten year olds (or a load of 16 year old idiots) who treat a message board like a chat room. Now, people make two word posts, and then double and triple post and use small talk like it's MSN. They use annoying internet abbreviations so they can pump their arguements or insults onto the board faster. It's sad. No thought goes into a post anymore, and that's the downfall of what was once a great place to be. I now have better things to do with my time than argue with some immature moron about how: "0MG 73H DLC 15N7 0U7 Y37!!!!! 8UNG13 15 4 8UNCH 0F L4ZY 45535!!!!!one!!!!"

I dissagree with most of your post, but there is no need to complain. A community this big will never have alot of mature Convos, or no spam. The old B.net Didnt have 50000 members.

You disagree? Okay, your opinion. My point is that it's great and all that new people are joining, but theres no where I can go to get away from spam besides leaving altogether.

Go to groups, There are a ton out there. I recommend MSXL, you can have a mature convo there.

The Underground is just disgustingly off topic all the time. As an experiment to anyone who thinks I am full of it: Go to Underground, make an on topic post, watch as someone replies with "What? Oh you must be talking about standby, yeah cheaters suck!", then watch the thread get bumped to page three in the course of three hours.

It has been hinted at by moderators that a change is coming to the forums. It will be interesting to see what ideas they have in the works to cut down on this piss poor internet behavior.

People welcomed newbies
Though we banned this come the new hotness.
Now, whenever a forum goer breaks a rule of conduct, the mods are either too lazy or too busy doing other things to deal with it (probaby the latter)
At least there are mods now. Back in the day, it was the incredibly stressed and busy employees doing it.
and the mature members of the forum are too afraid to offer criticism, because they don't want a seven year old to flame them into submission.
Also against the rules, so a banning would be in order.

Back in the days of the old crapness, the community was MUCH smaller because most people didn't know about bungie.net. Contrary to popular belief, the -blam!--to-normal ratio was about the same as it is now. It's just that there are so many more members, and thus -blam!-, now, since bungie.net is now an integral part of an extremely popular Bungie game.
Nothing's really changed member-wise other than having a lot more.

Ah well, I remember going onto bungie.net after Halo came out, but I was stupid and never signed up for the forum! So I have no proof! Wow, goweb, I remember that name, have you recently become a Mod, or am I imagining it?

give the guy a break guys. he is just sad and misses the old days, and old ways. you can't realy blame him for that can you? I mean lots of people get nostalgic occasionaly, and to be honest bungie is the kind of company that provokes this, so I am sure he didn't mean any harm, it was just human outcry. people get frustrated, you can either help them or hurt them.

I don't know about the -blam!--to-normal ratio, because I thought that the only people who wanted to join the forums back then were people who actually gave a rat's ass, and they weren't just fanboys of ps2 , or people who came because they wanted to complain about something and didn't want to dicuss it with others, just to vent. They came because they were interested in Halo, because if you weren't and just wanted to get attention, you wouldn't bother coming to such a small community. My point is that that ratio has gotten worse as more people join, because the trolls that join here would not have come if there weren't alot of other people joining making it such a large community.
And it's fine, no ones giving me a hard time. I came here to discuss, not to try and show everyone that my opinion is right.

  • 03.14.2005 3:33 PM PDT

It is quite unfortunate that discussion is practically non-existent now. However, as they say, this too shall pass. When the dust of the mighty Halo 2 behomoth and it's little brother DumbLuckyCow settles, perhaps there will be peace again in the kingdom. The fools will grow tired, the weak will move onto other pursuits, and the long-winded will shrivel, wrinkle, and stay on these forums. For the time being, I think that an analysis of why people post in the wrong forums would do a world of good. What kind of person would post "L@@K at my sweet DLC theory pics" in Septagon or the Underground? I don't understand that at all. Are the sidebar notes in blue not being read? Do people randomly choose a forum to post in?

All will heal with time,

He who makes a beast out of himself, gets rid of the pain of being a man.

I never really knew what the "good ol' days" as you guys call them were like, but I can bet you that the forums were better than they are now. I don't even dare to go into New Mombasa or Zanzibar, in New Mombasa all it is now is " When is the DLC coming out?" or " What does everyone want in Halo 3" its very annoying to post a new thread because if you post it at 10:00 its on the third page at 10:20. And if you do get any responses they are probably just annoying spam or flames for having a question.

But what I do think is the most annoying thing here on the forums is when some of the "old skool" members think that every person that joined after they did is a(excuse my language) noob or a spammer or flamer. Nowadays everyone is stereotyped by the date of when they joined; They don't even try to find out if you are a intellegent and respectful member. So maybe now some of you guys will stop thinking your better than the people that joined after you.

Not entierly. I think it was Banshee Barron that said

"young grasshoper Tanikaze is most impressive"

Where is he these days? BTW Tanikaze was a new member. What the hell does this have to do with anyhting? well, not all members that joined after the New Hotness are treated as complete idiots. And spammers.

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
- Benjamin Franklin, 1759

Well, I wasn't around for the "good ol' days" but I know what you mean. I check the forums every day on my lunch break, and occasionally at night when I am stuck at work. Rarely will I sign on, because their is no conversation. Not even in a thread with over 120 posts. It is just a bunch of random people leaving an opinion based on the subject of the thread. I was using HIH as a refuge, but that is turning into the same thing.

Unfortunately, that's what happens when great things get noticed by the masses. The masses will unappreciate, disrespect, and ruin a good scene. Look at what MTV did to Punk rock. Perfect example of a smaller group being taken over by the masses. Every time I hear a good charlotte song on the radio I try to remember what it was like to be able to say I listen to punk music, and have nobobdy know any band like that. Now all you will hear is a bunch of people talking about how great Jimmy Eat World is, or did you hear the new Green Day song....

Well, the good thing is that we can remember times when our scene was a good place for us, and take our friends from that scene, and remember from a distance.

Plus, you have to be happy that Bungie is doing so well for themselves. Their games are amazing!

No, it's about the same. You also have to remember that you are experiencing the rose-tinted glasses effect.

Although some sort of thing to help the current situation would be great, realistically, I don't think there's much more that can be done.
