I currently have very important information in a floppy disc that i need to move to my computer. Now, it's old and might be scratched, but i try anyway.
I open "My Documents" and "My Computer".
I tile both windows vertically so i see both windows.
I open my A drive window.
I wait for a while, and a window pops up saying "You need to format the disc. Do you want to format?"

My question is: If i format it, do i lose my information? I cannot lose it! I know it's still there, since I've seen it. Yet I don't know if formating will affect it. Someone please help!!!

You may just have a compatibility problem. You might want to pray its just a compatibility program. Try it on other computers. As many as possible. One of them may read it- and then you can do something wiser than putting important data on a floppy and nowhere else.

bah

The only thing that can work is going to the computer the info was created on. If it's the computer you're currently using, then you are totally SOL and might as well format it. I don't know of any programs that can get info from an unformatted floppy. Tell us more about the computers involved here.

I'm in charge of dues for my scout troop, and I haven't gotten any check for about a month. So when i'm trying to access the info (excel format) to add new checks in, it won't let me access it.

right now, i'm trying a Gateway (Windows XP) and i'm about to try a Gateway Solo laptop. (Windows 98)

Can you say "Smoke coming out of the disk drive"?

  • 06.29.2004 8:47 PM PDT

bah

I'm almost positive you can't format a floppy in the NTFS format. It really should work. A piece of advise from someone who's had more than their fair share of floppy problems, they suck. Use them, use them only for non-important stuff, but if you must, and if it's important, use two floopies for when one fails.

If you've only tried using Winblows, I would suggest trying to find a friend using a Unix-based system or something. My computer reads lots of stuff that the Winblows machine in the other room thinks is corrupt. Your scratched disc might have lost only some data that Winblows needs to recognize it. It's only a very remote possibility, but still worth trying if the data are very important.
