Subject: Profanity Filter

bah

Everyone who posts here has played Halo, which means they all here the Marines swear occasionaly. So why are some profanities -blam!-ed? It doesn't make sense. Any word that is heard in Halo should be able to be seen on the forum. I can't even type in cockpit because it becomes -blam!-pit. What's up with that?

Yea I agree. The filter should be toned down a bit. Man it was really aggressive before this site went live. For some reason it blocked, awesome. Heh.

MSXL: The Last Honest Chapter

I think they are just trying to make this forum "kid-safe" for the incoming masses from Halo 2. It's better to be "safe than sorry" I suppose.

Well, you do have to consider, Halo is rated mature. You'd think Bungie fans that are supposedly "mature", even if they're sorta young, would be able to ignore stuff like that. I think like ripsaw said, anything that can be heard in halo should be okay here. Besides, all of that stuff you can hear on primetime TV anyways.

The War will wage forever; though with it's fury comes a peace that you will never know here.

That sounds like a pretty good reason to not tone down the profanity filter. But:

Every one of us knows that they words they'll see on this site they'll have already have heard from their parents. Besides, I know that all of us have heard -blam!-, -blam!-, -blam!-, damn, -blam!-, bastard, and so forth.

I hope Achronos doesnt get POed at me for writing those (I think he isnt confined to the profanity filter), but that's how we all heard those words.

It doesnt matter if they heard those curse words from their mom or not. I'm not defending anyone, but it may offend some uhhh "uptight" members.

bah

But the swearing in Halo can get a little, ugly. Nothing you wouldn't hear on TV but to blamout sh (rhymes with) pit? Don't they ever say sh (rhymes with) pit in Halo? Maybe they don't.

One character in the halo 2 demo says shh it, but I don't think anyone said shh it in halo.

If it really annoys you that much, isn't there a way to turn it off for your profile? I remember that there was on the old b.net. It may have changed though with the new site...

Ah well. I think the filter is good anyway. I personally hate swearing of any kind (not that I'm overtly religious or something; far from it!), and the filter just discourages it. Although, maybe it should recognise that words like "co'ckpit" are legit!

Anyway, the lack of swearing here is one of the things I like most about these forums; it just helps add to the friendly atmosphere. :)

Give us our -blam!-ing optional filter back!

Swearing can be used to great effect.

We should keep the filter, the only problem is, that it filters just a bit too much, that's all.

Profanity at best is used in a comic sense here, but that doesn't make it acceptable to people who don't swear to begin with. Not everyone (but probably most ;) who play Halo swear, so they're used to it when they get here. Face it though, swearing doesn't really add much to any conversation other than beratement, and I agree that having a filter adds to the atmosphere here. That's one of the reasons I joined, because I know this isn't anything base or crass normally. With that said, I think the filter is hilarious, and if they just get the words to be censored right, then it should be fine.

Well, I think swearing is a way to place more emphasis on your point. If I say "I don't like it, gosh darn it!", you honestly won't take me seriously. I rarely do use anything considered vulgar myself, therefore, people can tell I'm not messing around when I have to.

I never swear. I never have. I think it's pretty silly to think that everyone learned swearing from their parents. I sure hope the world hasn't degraded that far, but it wouldn't surprise me. One of the things I hated most about Jr. High was how all the kiddies there swore and swore and swore, like they didn't know any other words. I figure they were just trying to act grown up--although they were actually producing the opposite effect--because it toned down a bit when I got to High School. People didn't swear for the sake of swearing anymore.

I'm glad we have the filter. If I wanted to hear a bunch of immature swearing, I'd go visit the Jr. High again. As for Halo 2, I wasn't too happy to hear (how do I say this without sounding silly myself? . . . I guess I can't) the "SH word" *gasp* *faint*. I think the relatively rare instances of "mild" swearing in Halo 1 were enough.

I think I've said enough.

Just my thoughts,
Poocho :)

-Hay rip saw remeber that post from when I was ....yha anyways,,,god i feel like i just waled over my grave...

I think that the filter should stay for everybody, not as an optional extra. If it were optional, all that it would result in would be that the people who swear would turn it off, so they would swear. As it stands, those people will realise that they'll get censored after their first post and won't swear anymore. Who wants to swear if it get's -blam!-ed out? I don't see how something that discourages swearing, and thus contributes to society and this community, could be seen as a bad thing. Except it is admittedly a little over-the-top in some respects. :)

By the way, I'd take you seriously if you said "gosh darn it!" If you don't swear, that's one more reason in my book to take you seriously. I say "gosh" and "golly" and "blast" myself in normal conversation. Call me what you like, I'm probably happier than those who do swear. In my experience, swearing is degrading to your state of mind. :)

Yeah I think it is good, even if they do swear in Halo. It is possible for people who dont own the game to visit here. duh. Just type in www.bungie.net click on septagon and ta-da you have made it. See how easy that was? And the person never even played halo. But they still dont have the filter on the 7th though. So if you really, really, like cussing just go over there kiddies!

Fine then. 99.999% of people here have played Halo. I've only seen one post, ever, of someone asking if they should buy Halo. One post. Only one. Uno. Un. Um. Oдно. 一. En. Um. Ein. One, single, post. QED.
P.S. Some computers may not be able to display spaecial characters.
