Subject: Profanity Filter

There is the chance that somebody who is a fan of the old-school Bungie games, and yet is anti-MS (very common!) and so refuse to buy an Xbox or any MS games (including Halo for Mac), but are still here out of fandom. Maybe they don't post or something, so we'll never know.

Everyone should stop being so prissy about using the English language to its full extent. Honestly, some of you sound like a bunch of Mail readers.
There's nothing wrong with swearing, unless it's all you use. Swearing can be used in a variety of interesting ways - emphasis and humour spring to mind. And Halo is a mature-rated game, so is intended for people who can handle reading powerful language.
That's my rant over.

yeah, but how many down here are truly mature?
(none if we are talking about behaviour =P).
I don't mind cursing and swearing, but it's just better to prevent bad things from happening.

Most of the time when there is cursing and swearing going on, a fight is soon to follow.

getting rid of the profanity filter would invite people to flame others freely, plus, if it did, people would take it the wrong way... imagine ps2 fanboys: 'halo fans are lame, they jsut sit around cussing in their forums, saying we are not superior... stupid halo, stupid xbox stupid everyone' thats exactly what the ps2 fanboys i know would say... then they are the complainers, the epople who think skateboarding is a crime, video games rot our brains and that TV shows like jackass should be banned, they are going to use this as evidance, to say that video games like halo are bad, when really its those crappy schools they send us to!!!

  • 04.23.2004 8:55 AM PDT

A lack of a profanity filter won't magically make people swear more. And it's just as easy to flame someone without swearing.

Swearing is just something that you don't need. Plain and simple. there are better ways to express your self then through profanity. Many people consider it immature, but whatever the case, curse words are not really needed in any conversation. So go cuss all you want in you room or at school, heck do it while your posting something on Bungie.net, just leave it out of your posts. It's not that hard, very simple and easy, there doesn't need to be a debat. thats life so deal with it.

I would rather see the filter optional, I like reading things in full no matter how vulgar they are. I might read a book with a few bad words in it and start seeing "blam" everywhere!

Vulgar language does not bother me the least bit, I have grown up around it all my life but have learned to use it only to total complete anger or out of sheer joy for something. If people want to curse, let them, it's in the Bill of Rights, Freedom of Speech, I do believe that applies to written language too. And I doubt people will feel they need to use that language more; it would just bring more restrictions towards it. Also I think a long time ago (if I can still remember) Matt or the webmaster wrote a little piece about the extent of language used in Halo and it stated what was used. (But if anyone who actually knows what FUBA means, well then…)I say let the people use what they want, maybe it gives them the feeling of being a Marine on Halo….

**People are always in a rush to be an adult, but one thing I’ve heard from adults has always been; “How I wish I was a kid again”, now do you think you should really rush now?

Well i know everyoen cusses sometimes, i know i do in those heated moments of halo when your enemy just happens to melee you in the back right as you were about to do that to someone else, or when you get that double killtacular! ahh the joy. but alas those people that make this website...what are they called? Oh yea, Bungie, well they say no swearing, so no swearing. No biggie, you can live without. So swear to your hearts content everywhere else, but leave the forums a nice good ol' G rating..heh

Um, your Bill of Rights doesn't actually apply to most people. It's in the American Constitution; as the Australian Constitution has no Bill of Rights I technically have no Constitutional rights. Since this is a web-based international community, this point is technically invalid (I'm being extremely picky here; don't take me seriously: I do have Constitutional rights; since the preamble of our Constitution defines Australia as a "liberal democracy", the High Court ruled in the early 1990s that Australian citizens do have democratic rights. :) ).

I still think that discouraging swearing can't harm anybody, and that's all the filter does. In the end it's Bungie's decision, and I don't think that they'll give you the option.

You're right, I shold not have brought up that point. But I guess we can replace the f-word with Bloody, like the fellow Englishmen. =D

I disagree, and I will use the following Red vs Blue quotes to prove it:

"Team-killing f**ktard" or "Team-killing nasty person"
"Backstabbing c**kbite" or "Backstabbing idiot"

those couldve been team-killing retard and backstabbing git, your opinion was biased and you deliberately used lame words like nasty person, just cos something isnt a swear word, it dosnt have to be replaced with a childish lame word people dont say. they could be replaced of tonnes of things, the S to the H.I.T wouldnt be replaced by cra p (im not sure if it filters that) not poo...

  • 04.25.2004 1:51 AM PDT

Retard is much worse than any swear word. By using it you are turning mental illness into something to be ashamed of. It's like calling someone -blam!- in an argument. And git doesn't have the same humourous ring to it as c**kbite.

i dont think retard is that badda word, most people dont even know what it means, and team killers may well be retards to TK, maybe c**kbite is more humourous, but we arent going for humour, this is bungie.net, not red vs blue, we have our own style, they have theirs...live with it...bungie arent going to turn off the profanity filter just cos you think c**kbite is funnier than git....

the profanity filter is fine the way it is. Well, it should filter just a bit less but, it's ok

So what if nobody knows what it means? It's still offensive.
and team killers may well be retards to TK
That's a terrible generalisation to make. TKers are idiots who think that it's über-cool to annoy other people, and in fact can only get kills by TKing.

Ok, team killing chats, go to the underground.

I absoultly hate people who use "retard" and "-blam!-" to represent stupid, the are showing how stupid they are. It's just another example of the English Language being taken out of context.

Your opinion is retardedly -blam!-.the are showing how stupid they are.Oh, nevermind!!!

:P

Retard is a good insult because it is not good to be retarded. But good insults aren't necessarily a good insult to use. There are a few words i can think of that are so offensive, that they should never be used. Retard isn't one of them, but it's close.

  • 04.26.2004 8:39 PM PDT

Retard is a good insult because it is not good to be retarded.
But at the same time there's nothing wrong with it if you actually are.

Oh, there's something wrong all right. It's not anyone's fault, but there is something wrong. Like if you're born without feet, there's something wrong.

As a person, I mean. And what "wrong" is always depends on how society perceives normality. It's probably too deep to get into here.
It's just that these terms attach negativity to the people who really suffer from these which, as well as being plain wrong, is also contrary to b.net's code of conduct.

-blam!- and retard are bad to use as insults because some people are -blam!-, and some are retarded. If you were -blam!-, and someone tried to insult you by saying, "You're so -blam!-!", wouldn't that just be pointless? And if you were retarded, and someone called you retard, Ide imagine that you'd either 1) didn't know what they were talking about, or 2) get really angry or upset. Upsetting/Angering people with ailments is unkind altogether. Another example: you walk up to a white man and say, "You're so white!", he would just look at you like you're an idiot. That's one way to look at it.. or at least how I look at it. I guess it really depends on whether people like insulting others. Sorry if you found this useless. ;D
