Halo 2 is going to answer all of our questions but I can't help but muse and surmise. This is what I think will be revealed in Halo2 and I know everyone has there own theory on the Origins and mysteries of Halo. I figured I might as well toss mine up and let you all pick at it :)

My Personal Halo Theory

We existed Millenia ago, alone in the cosmos, the first and only race. We made ourselves into Gods, harnessing the energy of suns and black holes to power our grand devices and yet, crafting whole species to serve as our servants, those that would explore and work upon high gravity worlds, those that would work upon methane planets, those that would fight for us and those that would serve as intermediary between ourselves and our servants.

Still, we were fearful. There where other galaxies and there existed thet possibility in those galaxies there could be others like ourselves and they might not be so peaceful. So we worked to create an insurmountable defense-- the Halo network.

The Halos were to be our greatest feat of engineering yet. Each was designed to emit a pulse of phased energy through slipspace out to 25,000 light years, totally burning out the neurons of any species with an advanced neurology. Each Halo was an ark and within each was a Library that stored the genetic samples of all species within its reach. Before firing the Halo, the Index which posseses an up to date scan of all the genetic samples contained within had to be returned to the core.

Afterwards, came the most amazing of our feats, we successfully created a genetic blank, an organism that could be molded to become any living form. Using this organism we could recreate all the creatures destroyed by the phase pulse and restore the galaxy to its previous state. Tragically, this achievement was also the source of our destruction.

The organisms meant to repopulate the galaxy mutated, assumed a primitive form of sentience on its own and began to prey upon us. We dubbed them "the Flood". Their amorphous nature and unique ability to alter its own genetic structure made it difficult to combat. The Halo network was not yet complete, the shelters against its might not yet erected but there was not choice, the Flood consumed all. The Rings exploded, nullifying all life save for a far flung portion of the galaxy. The survivors were few, a lone planet called Earth held a shelter against the Halos deep within the earth. Meanwhile, some of the Covenant were spared, being in an area where the Halo's were not yet completed. Who knew they were to evolve and become a collective, feeding off of our bones.

Things to Note:

The Forerunners could not have designed the Halos to combat the Flood. The Flood spread too fast and the Halos would have taken too long to construct.

Fred, Kelly, the Chief and Cortana instinctively know how to operate Covenant technology that no one has seen before based on its Forerunner symbols. It bothers them that they are so familiar but they can't actually read them.

The Library, according to Bungie's Forum title on "The Library" is also a collection of cloned DNA sequences.

Good job, Draerden, I applaud you. Of all the theories I've seen so far, your's is among the most plausable.

Thank you Floodie, err... Infection...

As for the theories supporting humans being Forerunner, my best evidence of that lies in 343 Guilty Spark. He scanned the Chief, and classified his armour against his own ideas of what a good armour was. If he could do that and seemed to be able to differentiate species why would he mistake the Chief as the one who came so many thousands of years before?

I didnt bother reading it but there is a 75% chance of any theory someone posts is absolutely wrong. Bungie wants an original storyline, as in knowones ever thought of it before.

Boy, I bet Bungie is just sitting back looking at our theories and just laughing hysterically.

True JesusFreak and GoldenElite but the question is... is my theory closer to the truth then yours is? It's not easy to come up with a theory that isn't countered by the materials at hand.

Didn't Bungie state that Humans AREN'T the Forerunner? And I have another little piece of the puzzle.

When 343 GS stated "But you already knew that. Um, how couldn't you?" I think that means the Moniter assumed you knew what you were doing. And then Cortana says "Left out that little detail, did he?" That "little detail" was the whole thing about Halo destroying all sentient life. I can't explain that other stuff about how things seem familiar, and 343 GS recognizes you, but I think it's partly becuase he's insane.

Personally, I think that humans just look like the Forerunner. But that still leaves the question: Why do the SPARTAN's recognize Covenant symbols so well?

Oh, and Draerden, I signed up for that Ruins OF Reach thing. I'm the bathroom mirror cleaner, remember? Where do I go to do that whole RPG thing? When does it start? I'm so confused.

I don't think Bungie ever claimed that Humans aren't Forerunner, at least I've never seen it. Bungie's been very tight lipped on the subject.

As for the Ruins of Reach, the Storyteller for the game has been having trouble accessing his email so there's been a short delay.
