In the past I had usually bailed figuring that with just a few shotty rounds all those red blobs on my motion sensor meant a bad hair day for me if I stuck it out. Recently I also decided to stand my ground (fear of heights or just green pools of goo?) and duke it out with the forever spawn of flood fodder. I only play on legendary so I died quite often due to being bolder than I needed to be, but eventually (5 or 6 tries) I was able to withstand the onslaught long enough to feel like I had accomplished something. Now I find out that it is not neverending, and I know I just accomplished a few minutes of whittling away, and not finishing! I will give it another go tonight, and either do it, or die alot trying!
The plasma pistol/rifle are the best against flood because you can basically go through the whole battery charge without a reload if needed and done right. The plasma not only kills them eventually but stuns them and slows their approach. When there are alot of them you have to vary your target to get that affect, which is why the shotty is nice (it stuns/slows/kills in a swath rather than just one target when they are far enough away) for larger groups intent on doing you bodily harm.
For the creation of Flood Buddies, plasma rules because you can more selectively whittle the flood form down to the drooling shuffling whipless buddy we all call pal. Using an AR or pistol does too much damage at once, and usually kills rather than creates.
