Paroday will be missed :(

September 27th 2009

Man the first time I faced a Zealot i was playing with my friend on Aotcr. I was screaming "KEEP SHOOTING KEEP SHOOTING AHHHHHHH -blam!-" and then we got owned....badly. Elites>brutes.

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Yeah, Brutes don't have recharging sheilds. it's just not the same game when you don't have to keep a hail of fire on them. With Brutes you can pop out, shot, then hide again. But with the Elites you had to be damn sure they didn't get time to recharge their sheilds.

Zealots, as we all know have a natural, rechargeable Overshield in halo CE, while they did not go camo, those dead ultras, (the silver clad elites) which you can find all over the campaign sometimes leave behind a camo powerup or overshield powerup, possibly hinting that they were the top leader in combat, but unknown, as they only played their role as corpses.

In Halo 2, they should have overshields, but they dont seem that different to the spec ops elite when they fight with you against the brutes.

I haven't played halo 3, but yea, according to wiki, the AI for them was dumbed down sadly.

According to one of the novels(cant remember which one) those silver clad elites are like surveyor/reporters or something similar(having mental blank)

It's alot like being chased by a really fast hunter, except on the second control room level. (Full circle?)

Me gusta

I was much more terrified of the sneaky spec ops(Black/camo) elites.

Yeah weak things but terrible if you go running into them. If you know they are coming it's not such a big deal. I've got the locations pretty much memorized now.

Chill out - dude, you really need to

Bring back Final Run!

I was always too afraid... by the time i found out roughly where they were i was too busy fleeing for my life to be memorizing their exact positions. i kinda like it like that, i don't like to have it all mapped out.

i love how they used to take cover actively. i just hate how brutes stand there like cannon fodder and just take ordinance rounds to the face.

I love how you revived this thread after a month of no posts. ;)

They took cover, and they sidestepped, and they dived. All that was necessary.

One of the things that made the Zealot great was a combination of timing in the level and where in the level.

There you are picking off a few more Grunts when suddenly, you hear a roaring battle cry and a shining Gold Sangheili warrior brandishing his sword charges down the narrow corridor at you. You curse your misfortune as you take in the fact that you cannot run around him and slowly retreat.
You immediately bring your assault rifle to bear and try to hose him down, but the fearless warrior continues his charge. You start throwing grenades at his feet, but the Zealot runs by them, shields sprinkled with bits of shrapnel. At the very ,last second you stop backpedaling and rush forward swinging your rifle at his face. After taking so much damage, the alien warrior finally falls and you breathe a sigh of relief.

By having some of these encounters happen unexpectedly and in narrow spaces, it limited what the player could do to get an advantage early on, such as strafing around and firing at the Zealot's flank. Instead, it led to more intense confrontations where you pray and spray, hoping that he falls before you do.

Sometimes you had time to think. I.E. on bridges, with lots of cover. On open fields and corridors, you have no choice but FIGHT or FLIGHT.

So I just went back to Halo 1 to check some things quickly, and decided to mess around on AOTCR for a bit.

Turns out I'd forgotten Zealots run faster than you. That sword hurts. Even on Easy.

  • 02.03.2009 5:45 AM PDT

Easy is the only difficulty the swords aren't one hit kills. LOL. And they do run faster don't they?

  • 02.03.2009 8:25 PM PDT

Yes. Yes they do.

  • 02.03.2009 9:24 PM PDT

It only makes it even more apparent when you're backpedaling away, firing heedlessly against their overshield. XD
