Subject: Two Betrayals: Final Run

Chill out - dude, you really need to

Bring back Final Run!

There has never in my opinion been a better or more playable segment or piece of one-player content in the history of video games. Sure, Assault on the Control Room was probably a better level in total, but Final Run has absolutely literally everything going (with the small exception of the Scorpion).

Enemies, mighty, fast, invisible and already locked in battle. All of them a danger from the Grunt to the Hunter to the dodging Zealots.

Emotion, soundtrack, plot... was i in a movie? Perhaps. did i wish i was? definitely

Print it on a t-shirt and i'll wear it. sell me tickets to it and i'll buy them. play it on the radio and i'll listen to it.

...Put it in my X-Box and I'll play it for hours....

I actually have a challenge for you.

With whichever weapons you wish, fight on foot through the Flood mob on the right, around the Wraith, while firing at it, then through the whole group of Covenant to the "locked" door to the elevator room, which coincidentally will unlock after a couple seconds of running into it.

As an added bonus, if you do all this, BUT pause to take out the Wraith turret with a Shade turret, and frag one or more Elite, and manage to Fuel Rod at least one of the camo'd Elites without knowing where they are(trust me, I've done this many thymes), a special surprise awaits you.

this all can be done, but not on legendary, there's just not enough ammo or juice in the shields. the only way for the clean up on legendary is from above in a banshee. but i'll get on it. psyched that the Halo disc works in my 360... didn't know til yesterday.

and yea it is the most epic battle in the history of video gaming, in my humble opinion

Personally, this has always been my favorite section of the whole Halo universe. I always do this part of the level on foot (actually, I do most of the game on foot except where I have to use a banshee) and it is just darn fun! On Legendary it takes patience, but it is worth it big time!

exactly. always did it on foot and on Legendary it's not easy but it's damn satisfying

Doc: "i'm a pacifist"
Caboose: "your a thing that babies suck on?"
Tucker: "no dude, that's a pedephile"
Church: "tucker, i think he means a pacifier"

defintely one of my all time favorites

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

I have it loaded on my 360 and still play!

All those Halo remake threads are now missing one thing: A rally point load feature.

I have lots of favorites in that level: The Flood making their first appearance with the alien music playing in the background, the first of the two bridges....
My absolute favorite is the second generator, with the wraith, the hunters, one or two banshees trailing you and a really fun environment, complete with a bajillion-foot tall tower...

yea it's fantastic.

can i also mention that point in the level Halo when you're holed in on one of the big shield generator platforms (or whatever they are) while you're rescuing troops from the dropships and there's covenant trying to get up and surrounding you all around.

so many segments of unbelievable gameplay, the campaign really set that game above all others

  • 09.11.2008 4:00 AM PDT

The campaign really is excellent in terms of gameplay.

Here's to hoping that Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw makes a Zero Punctuation about it! :D

"Against"? Far as I can tell, he doesn't ream games with actual gameplay.

I think it'd be a good review, not as good as the CoD4 review, but still good.

Just message me on live.

I hated Two Batrayals, Assualt on the Control Room was epic but could get repetitive, the Maw, though - you got the best of everything.

  • 09.12.2008 1:12 PM PDT

I agree that Final run was the best part of the whole halo series. So epic.

Yes, slapping over the internet is extremely effective...

Why do you hate it anyways? If you're not into the whole backward level thing I can understand...but why? You know, I was almost glad to see the Covenant after the Library...

I can't say one good thing about that feature.
1. I never use it, picking 5 minute sections isn't appealing.
2. Almost always I play Halo1 campaign from start to end, saving and quiting when needed. Then continuing from that.
3. Halo 3 has a lot longer loading times. One of many reasons I like CE campaign more. Maybe creating the rally points took away from something else in Halo3.

Can you believe it?

That's the part of the level where Under Cover of Night plays.

:D

it's the part of the level where so much magic happens.

me and my brother played it co-op once and played it to Ride of the Valkryies on the stereo.

sad but fantastically true.

I once dreamed I saw a Drinniol fight a Lekgolo, but I won't say which was victorious

I am also very fond of that particular part. Every time my "all Halo soundtracks" playlist shuffles around to "Under Cover of Night," I can picture myself, shotgun in hand, walking up out of that tunnel into the cold night, the Flood and Covenant already battling around me. It's a moment of solitude and quiet determination.

Solitude, good word. i think the important point is the solitude. Unlike the other levels, for some reason that cold blowing wind and that snow fall adds to the isolation that makes it such a fun level.

Chill out - dude, you really need to

it's the long open run across the dark snowy field with just you and your shotgun, waiting for the whole world of Flood and Covenant to appear.

EPIC
