Subject: During X-rays- what is the apron for?!!?!?

I've looked around on google a little bit, but I'm terrible at finding things online.

So when you go to get an X-Ray (not the dentist kind) you have to wear this lead apron over your "junk" (does this apply to females as well? I don't mean to be obscene, I'm just curious), what does it do? Does it make its so that nothing you don't want shows up on the x-rays? Or does it protect you from radiation?

If you dont wear it the radiation will make you sterile,That means you wont have any kids.Ironic isent it, You have to wear an apron if you want children...but we wear one anyways, and ...ah nevermind.

No it will cook your insides.

I'm not saying the apron is the bad part. The part that makes me feel "fruity" is the little robe thing you have to wear. These are best used for displaying my nicely shaped ass.

Just kidding. But that would have to be the most uncomfortable portion of my recent hospital visit.

Note that this radiation is very similar to the radiation that still exists in Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and Chernobyl.
I'm not sure on the number- but I think the radiation created by the bombs dropped in 1944 on Hiroshima and Nagasaki (I know one was dropped by Enola -blam!-) has killed nearly a million people. And thats all after the initial blast. But, it was the only way to stop the Japanese from resisting our invasion. I don't mean to argue politically, I just mean to say that yes- this is terrible suffering, but it had strategic importance. Needless to say, it was a decision Truman didn't make lightly.

Ya but if you think about it why wouldnt they cover your head? If Im not mistaken without your head you cant live.

Well, different kind of radiation. Nuclear fission tends to produce alpha and beta particles, which are essentially harmless, and gamma rays, which are right bastards.

before people realized that x-rays could harm you, they used x-ray machines to find out your shoe size at stores. Some people had it done so often, that they got radiation burns and cancer!

Just thought you might want to know. :-)

Study up on what alpha, beta, and gamma radiation are made of, then you'll know that it's true.

Ohhhh I see... But they're both damaging nonetheless.

And goweb- you're applying for Oxford? Thats awesome! I want to go to Harvard or Yale- got any hints?

Well, cancer is just a cell whose DNA has mutated, and it is dividing out of controll- so yeah, you can get cancer in any body part (even the foot).

You do know that Apha waves can be stoped by your skin and a peice of paper. And Beta waves can be stoped by your skin, don't you?

Lead stops radation. Radation kills you. The reson the apron is so heavy is 'cause it's filled with lead. Enough said.

Edit:
Hey, that sorta rhymes.

So what "Class" Of wave do they use for a head xray machine then?

Oh, and to answer the original question: the lead apron has nothing to do with keeping the machine from seeing your "stuff". Look at a printed x-ray sheet some time- soft tissue won't show up (since x-rays are a kind of light [energy], they usually pass right through). The lead apron is just for shielding.
