before people realized that x-rays could harm you, they used x-ray machines to find out your shoe size at stores. Some people had it done so often, that they got radiation burns and cancer!

Just thought you might want to know. :-)

I wread about that in Biology class... I always woundered. What if? Getting Cancer in the foot? is it possible?

Well, cancer is just a cell whose DNA has mutated, and it is dividing out of controll- so yeah, you can get cancer in any body part (even the foot).

I kinda already know that... I'm learning Biology at school. I just haven't heard of any one getting cancer in their foot before, so I guess it must be rare.

So what "Class" Of wave do they use for a head xray machine then?

It's not a laser, there are no "classes"- x-rays are just x-rays (they're all the same).

Yeah, people get cancer because carcinogens/radioactive isotopes will tend to build up more in organs. No organs in the feet, so, yes- it is pretty rare.

Fox he was stating that the radiation given off from a nuclear blast can be stopped by your skull right? and that was my response

so you were talking about Radiation "classes" then?

Then what I meant was, the head xray machines: What "Class" of radiation do they make, because someone said certain types cant even go through paper.

...I have no clue what we are talking about. Bye!

I'm surprised at there being so much confusion!

That's right. Think of it as a broken thermostat. Just FYI, high-energy light causes cancer and death by shaking and breaking big molecules such as proteins...
X-ray radiation is similar to Gamma Rays in that they're both extreme shortwave light. Gamma rays are more energetic than X-rays and produced differently.

I've heard that the lead apron dealy has a dual purpose; it's to protect the "junk" that it covers from being seen as well as the radiation... X-rays can be used to see some tissue other than bone, too. You just turn down the intensity, which your doctor probably knows how to do.

Someone asked about radiation types:

here it is.

Alpha - can be absorbed by paper.

Beta - can be absorbed by skin, carboard, wood.

Delta - Can be absorbed by thick steel, thin sheet of lead.

Gamma - Can be absorbe by thick sheet of lead.

That's it. Cudos.

There are dozens of vareint wave lenghts of radiation, its just anougher spetrum of light. Most other varants include X-rays and Microwaves.

there is no Danm class of radiation, there are wavelengths and wave freqences.

Whoops! I did didn't I?

Oh, well... I guess they probably won't understand it even if we shoved a science book infront of them with a diagram on it.

Neutron - stopped by about 6 feet of steel+ about 3 feet of lead+ about 1 foot of carbon
(I think lithium also makes good Neutron Radiation shielding)

Neutrino - stopped by nothing.

  • 06.30.2004 5:26 PM PDT

I'll be on my own side.

neutrino radiation penetrates almost anything.but its not harmful.at least i dont think it is.

yeah btw, where the hell have you been byrum? they shut down our laser war

yup i paid attention in my science classes

  • 06.30.2004 5:28 PM PDT

I'll be on my own side.

but remeber the crystal from First Strike?? it emits neutrinos in normal space and an unknown lethal radiation in Slipspace.it penetrates lead, carbon, lithium or whatever else you can think of

Yeah, the people who don't really know what they're talking about left.

btw, my grandfather is a reator/radiation/mutation/research chemist/scientist....(if that made any scence).

it didnt make sense, but hes in the field of mutation and radiation.

those other people were just like"uh radiation.....isnt that the stuff that comes out of the radiator??" dumbasses

Yeah, pretty much. He also came up with the idea of double paned gogles (that don't fog), but he never bothered to pattent them (he could've been a millionaire).

That made perfect scence to me mate.

Just out of interest... how long do think it takes for a rat's body to mutate and to what percentage before it dies from cancer?

I think, not long...

i dunno.why dont you find out? get a rat and put it inside your stereo's CD slot and turn it on.the laser emits radiation, but its probably not very lethal

byrum i wasnt being sarcastic. i meant that your description was kinda confusing, but i know what youre tryin to say
