I don't think this problem will ever fully go away, but the more mature and helpful people we have, the easier it will be for us to maintain a welcoming and stimulating environment. How long someone has been here really doesn't mean jack. Some people are always going to be asses. I just hope that some of our elder statesmen will have the patience to stick through it and help make things better.

I agree with many of these comments and though it might be unrealistic, I want the Bungie.net forums to be friendly to newcomers without alienating the olde timers. It's going to be tough, but hopefully through some messaging/training, discipline and help from a crack team of moderators, we can make a dent.

And Yoozel, I already told you that your moderator powers will be restored as soon as I finish the top secret moderator book of hands that I'm working on. However, you will have to venture into the Underground, as that's where moderation is needed the most.

When I see crap like the example that was posted, I delete the post and send a warning to the user. We have better tools now so we can blacklist anyone with the click of a button and we can set how long they are on "time out" for. A formal "three strikes" system might be hard to do, but I think we can do a decent job as long as our moderators are all communicating. (yes, I need to go approve stosh's chapter.. I'll do that right after I hit 'submit')

I just signed into this page, and I agree with what has been said about the newer members givin people heat. In my 1.5 days as a member I have been called a "noob" a good 6 or 7 times. and why? I have put in my time as an avid gamer, have logged hundreds of hours on my xbox, and know more about past, current and up-comming games than I do anything else. It's good to see that others are lookin into it.
And I have read a few times in this thread to stay away from The Underground. Could you explain why, and direct me to a better place of...business?

Well the reasons for not going to the underground are uhm... alot. Some think that there are too many n00bs (sorry for using that word). others think that there is too many activity. (the top topic changes just about every 20 seconds.)
And basicly the undeground seems to be changing into a flamefest, it's not safe for newer people being there! that's why some of the older members decided to stay away from the underground., they don't like it down there anymore.
Those were a few reasons.

True, by the time you are done reading a post, about 7 more have poped it, it's insane! But alot of people just like to guess and predict what's in Halo 2 for breaggin' rights, sure it's neat to toss around ideas, but when someone is like ; "Psh.. that'll never happen you stupid noob". That just pisses me off! I have said and used the word "noob" but I never call someone it.

Maybe we should add "noob" to the filter, I think it'd be funny and werid...

I think i'm going to be the single person that gives sketch a gray hair....

That'd be cool if it would replace it with any random word.

  • 04.22.2004 7:09 PM PDT

I've noticed that, on The Underground that a post has almost no value. (I could go as far as calling it, "post-inflation".) By the time you can write up a long, quality post, fifty others have already been piled on top- and five minutes later it is buried under another 50. It's like I've contributed nothing at all. I liked it at the old Underground where each post had (at least to me) a certain value that the new forum's posts lack.

The War will wage forever; though with it's fury comes a peace that you will never know here.

Well, I cant think of any way to solve that particular problem, Barron. I sometimes look back on the 2nd and 3rd pages of the Underground for an interesting post. If I do find one, I'll post a reply, which moves it to the first page for the viewing and replying pleasure of others.

And, after reading some of the posts in this thread, I've decided in part that it's our duty (if you want to call it that) to go to the Underground and try to keep the peace among the assholic members and those who recieve insults. Perhaps, that could work.

  • 04.22.2004 7:59 PM PDT

Well, I try, Maraxus, but I can't stay up all night. There are far too many posts for me to handle- I need help. It's not like at the old Underground, where I could keep the peace almost all of the time.

I think most people have the term 'noob' wrong. Sure you can call someone who is new at something a 'newb' but they might have been playing Halo a year or more than you have. Just because someone just signed up for something doesnt mean they are ignorant about what that 'something' is about. For example, I only joined Bungie.net a few days ago but I know a great deal more than most people do. Not to say that everyone is dumb, but sometimes they just miss the point.

Major Silva is right. Just because a person is new to the forum doesn't mean that they are new to the game. I may have just joined the forum, but I've had Halo for months (granted, it's not nearly as long as many of you). Furthermore, in those few months, I have read all of the books and spent hours surfing the net for information on Halo (mostly the HBO site). The "Member Since" date really isn't as reliable as people make it out to be.

Everyone should just ignore the a-holes. The silent treatment might make some angrier and more prone to shootin flames but hopefully it should just simply dissuade them from making further attacks. Don't give flamers the satisfaction.

the problem is flame "elighten" others. One guy starts to flame a person and a second immidiately grabs his flamethrowers. And then comes the third and so it goes on and on. And alot of people don't like it when they get flamed and start flaming back.

now i got a good plan. Being dutch has one major advantage. I live in a different timezone then the americans(the majority down here). During the morning and early afternoon, things are quite silent in the underground. (since most of the americans are sleeping.) It gives me a good oppertunity to check things without being bothered by those busy bees.

I beg to differ, and I will challenge you for it, lol.

I have to laugh because that sounds like a conspiracy, but it is a good idea.

Just to reiterate what has been said elsewhere - We're working on plans to expand the forums and create a few additional ones to thin out the mass of topics in the Underground. That should help reduce the chaos and hopefully create some more refined discussions in each forum.

it could also mean more flamefests in even more places and a heck more spam pits.b Or am i too negative at the moment?

Thats awesome, could it be that the off-topic forum might actually happen? I just hope theres not a ton of forums going on though, really, I still think that the maw should be done away with, and just use the underground as does the xbox halo users do.

I also have noticed sketch that you have been more active in the forums too. This is really cool because input from the b.net staff not only let us know that you guys are listening, but that we just have input from you guys and get to know you better. Its the little things like saying hi to the new members that count.

actually, now i think about, it, y is the forum so spammed? its because its too general a topic, everything bunie amasses a lot, perhaps it would be better if we had a good deal more forums, it would thin down stuff a lot, perhaps add a halo xbox forum, a halo 2 forum, and make the underground for all other bungie games (which are now outdated so can be grouped together... as long as you dont remove the truly awesome 'gallery' i dont care!! i love that gallery... nice and slow...

Hehe I like the gallery too. And did anyone else notcie how many things go on in the Underground? The first day B.net went on there wasnt even three pages. I log in two days later and there are literally dozens!! Could this be just because its the first forum in the list? And those damn flamers its like they got nothin better to do than curse people out through pixelated text.

The thing is, that the underground is actually the only place were you can talk abourt halo 2. And most people come here because of halo 2. And yes flamers are annoying, hopefully, more forums will solve the problem., if there are going to be more forums that is.

You're on Live killa!

Well having your own personal chapter is good for talking about halo 2 as well. Maybe we just need an entire forum devoted to halo 2, like nab said....

I'm starting to like that idea more and more, i was a little sceptical in the beginning, not anymore, well a little. But most flamers will move to the halo 2 forum because that's why most are here: halo 2.

you're on live killa? You know if you read that wrong, it's very sick.....

Like I said in a post below, alot of flames happen because people disrespect others ideas and thus that will lead to name calling and so forth. Oh' the day when humanity will grow up...

That's why i'm afraid that a halo 2 forum might turn into a flame fest barbeque.
At the moment alot of people have ideas about halo 2 and not everyone agrees with all ideas.
