You've got to think crazy, of course, because you only get innovation by refining insanity. - Jason Jones

Once again this one is mainly for those who have read any of the books. Halsey says cortona will not last forever. They have a certain amount of time or information that they can hold or maintain, anyone think that halo 2 could be her end. Please dont hate me or flame me. Im just trying to get people more into the storyline rather than gameplay. Been doing that since my inception in early 2003.

Dr. Halsey says that a "smart" AI only has a certain life span because they will eventually think themselves to death.

smart AI's last around 7 years, and unless halo 2 last 7 years, cortana wont die, she's a new AI...yea...

I think you may have hit it on the nail. Read First Strike, and this may not seem like such a far fetched an idea:)

AI:s don't work that way
And AI:s think themselves to death becaus they run out of memory and processing space. Cortana absorbed every data in Halo's control center, thus occupying most of her memory and shortening her life span

...Yes...Cortana DOES work that way, she can make sub-copies of herself in emergencies, jeez

She can make copies of herself with the strange covenant programming, but each successive copy has the same life span she had when she copied herself, they dont last longer

maybe she will copy herself hundreds of time and hack the covie network...
i wonder how many Cortona's MC can fit inside his head...

Cortana considered that but these copies would be just as old as she was. Thus, copying herself would not make her live any longer.

Worse, she's afraid that the Index that she's carrying has shortened her life span considerably. She's already starting to show signs of rampancy.

I think that Cortana will either undergo huge modifications or be destoryed completely. I think this because Joe Staten mentioned a 'Miranda' entity in the Making of Halo 2 video, and he talked about a scrapped scene in which she straps a bomb to the MC's back... Another reason that Cortana will probably die in Halo 2 is because she contains all the secrets of the Forerunner in the data she is assimilating from Halo, which means that if she doesn't die Halo 2 is going to be the last Halo - we'll know everything.

Cortana's brain as well as ALL other smart AI's are made from the imaging of a human brain, (its in the books) also AI's are constantly learning and always thinking. For this reason they can think themselves to death. when their "brain" has reached capacity they die. Cortata downloaded the entire history of the Forerunner and for this reason her life was shortened.
About AI copying, Cortana did copy herself, but whenever an AI is copied there are small imperfections. Because of this ONLY the first copy of an AI is "perfect". Cortana actually copied herself hundreds of times in the books while on the Covenant cruiser. Some of the copies became so corrupted they could not even speak in complete sentences. So no matter what Cortana will die, eventually.

From one of the pics that I saw of MC and GS343 on a "box cover"...wouldn't it be possible that Cortana takes over 343 and overrides his program because she knows the Forerunner's technology and then she could make a copy of herself and put her into 343's sphere?

That's just crazy enough to work! After all, 343 Guilty Spark is an AI and he's over 100,000 years old! Cortana can use the knowledge she aquired on Halo and extend her lifespan indefinitely!

But then again, is guilty spark really a "smart" AI? He seems to be controlled by his protocols quite a bit

could cortana take over 343? 33 is more advanced, or at least built by a race that is mroe advanced in every way then humans...

  • 07.01.2004 3:14 PM PDT

I'll be on my own side.

Cortana was created in 2552.Halo 2 starts in 2552(or 2553).so if the battle for Earth and whatever other missions are in Halo 2 last until 2559,Cortana will still be around for quite a while, unless all the Halo data shortened her life span

yet again, i dont feel like reading everyones post, but an ai "dies" when it thinks about its collected information soo much, it forgets to perform tasks necessary to remain "on", and this usually takes place on an average of 7 years, but i think this is based on an average of data of a certain number of ai, so in different situations, they last longer/less. one that knows less, lives longer, one that knows more lives shorter....blahblah.....but since cortana stored the data in halo, which is (idk excactly) billions of years of data, (if you read first strike) she is already showing signs of lag, meaning, yeah, shes probably gonna kick it.
And the covenant ai copy thing, its too late, she already has the halo data, and copying her would be the same amout of lifespan, plus theres the whole more copies = more glitches thing, and unless there is a way to put an ai in "sleep mode" i dont think that would work

thats what i think

She did store the data, and she is talking in psychobable or close to it near the end of first strike, i really dont think she makes it, or wait, what if halsey took kelly off to make another ai and put in kelly. could happen, what do you guys think?

Talking about 343 lasting really long..... He had an entire Halo worth of databases and memory. Cortana has to be able to be transferred and such. All her memory travels with her. And Cortana will show up in Halo and she will probably not die. I hope you guys realize that she is a main character and every bit as important as the Chief.... How many movies or games or just stories in general can you think of where a main character dies? If you wanted to think long and hard about it you could come up with quite a few. But think of this: How many times is the death at the end of the story? If she dies, it'd be at the end of the Halo series, and I think we all know this will not be the last Halo game.

why cant they just extract the Halo information she gained, copy it, and store it, thus giving Cortana a couple years back on her lifespan........
