Subject: The Tru7h: More Spartans in Halo 2 than Master Chief! (Ackerson)

Long, but good:)

Many of us who have read First Strike have been led to believe that Ackerson is up to something BIG. Being a bit more specific, many people believe that he has started a Spartan program of his own. Quotes from the book such as, "Something extrodianry had just been revealed - there was some kind of backup plan on par with the Spartan program, and Ackerson was behind it," and "He had heard of Ackerson's alternative program to the Spartan-IIs" have been used as support for these accusations. No picture, info, nor interview, that I'm aware of, has been given on the subject of a possible secret unit of Spartans. I think the recent release of the OXM screens and renders may hide a few clues pertaining to this Subject.

First off, the last statement of the article, "There will be brand-new critters, varmints and dudes in Halo 2, but perhaps just as interestingly, new variants on old favorites," should be taken quite literal, if you ask me. In particular, the new dudes and new variants on old favorites part. I believe that statement is intended to draw your attention to the new Special Ops Elites, and possible the Temple Guard Elites. I also think that statement could mean new Spartans, but more on that in a bit.

Untill First Strike, all we new of the Spartans was that they all died in battle protecting Reach... except for Linda ( I believe ) who was frozen due to major body troma. Of course, after reading First Strike we come to find that there are survivors of the Battle for Reach. At the end of the book there are several Spartans left alive on their way to Earth, except for Kelly. According to First Strike, the Spartans are still in the familar green armor... no wardrobe change yet. So, I am left wondering this. Why is it that THIS render is titled, "A dual-wielding white Spartan." Please bare with me before you throw out you judgment.

If you notice, all the other renders of a Spartan, except for the "Dual plasma pistol goodness" have some indication of the MC in their title. Every screenshot in every magazine article or website that has had a Spartan in a screen/render has had MC in the the article or title in relation to the screen. I believe that there is a reason, however blown out of purpotion it may seem, that the render has Spartan in the title instead of MC. It's not the MC.

If it's not the MC, then that leave two groups of Spartans to fill the role. Either the surviving Spartans from Reach, or Ackerson's secret batch. I personally think that it isn't one of the Spartans from Reach because there hasn't been a wardrobe change. We know that the Spartans will get a new suit of armor, but we can gather from the E3 demo in 2003 and the plethra of screens showing the MC in the new armor that the new armor isn't white, it's still green. You might also say that it's just a Spartan from MP. I would say that it's a render, not a screenshot. Bungie isn't going to release a render of the MC from the MP graphics engine... less quality. Also, in MP you play as the MC, not other Spartans. I believe that this could be a screen of Ackerson's secret batch of Spartans. If you notice, the color scheme is almost exactly that of the Special Opps Elite, which leads me to think of Ackerson. Again, the MC's batch of Spartans don't get a color change in their new armor, as shown by all the screens released of him in the new armor. This isn't a MP shot. Look at the quality of the render compared to the screens Bungie has released from MP mode vs. the campaign mode... it's from the campaing mode graphics engine. Even if it was from MP, you still play as the MC. So, I'm left wandering who is the Spartan in this render?

Update:
What doesn't make any sense (storyline wise) is that most all MP levels in Halo (1) are on Halo. MC is the only Spartan who made it to Halo. In Halo 2 there will be atleast 16 Sparatans in MP, we know from the books that there aren't 16 of the original Spartan-IIs left. If the campaign is to be related in any way to the MP, then there should be some explaination as to why there are other Spartans! Oh, give some other explanation besides the "there can't be 12 MC's running around in MP"... I'm not an idiot:)

ALSO

This is a render, not a screenshot from MP, correct? I thought renders were computer built models of a specific character, not a generic Spartan with a million possible color schemes from a MP game. If this render is from MP, then why is it's quality the exact same as that of the Master Chief renders, which, I'm presuming from Sketch's statement, are taken from the campaign mode engine. We know that the graphics are of less quality in MP, why the same quality in this render as the MC renders taken from Campaign mode. Sorry if I'm digging a hole out of air here, but the white Spartan render looks exactly the same, quality wise, as the Master Chief renders.

I mostly agree and like the idea, but the spartan in the picture is merly of a mp skin (99.234% sure), not saying at all there won't be other spartans besides John in the campaign.

I know that you said about quality, but I have the mag. and I think it was made of mag. quality and to show what mp will be like (in the mp section anyway).

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree about were the render is taken. I still think it's taken from campaign mode due to the quality of the render. Still, you have to wonder why it's titled white Spartan, seeing as how you play the MC in MP:)

When they talked about the SPARTANS in the multiplayer demonstration put on by Joe and Max, they referred to the SPARTAN as just that, a SPARTAN

They didn't say he was the Chief; it was doesn't take away from your point too much though

with all due respect, i believe in mp you are supposed to play as yourself (honestly), that way it's like you are the spartan. I know that you can have that white (spec. ops skin in mp), so I guess we'll just have to wait for confermation or Nov. 8.

 • 07.01.2004 12:57 PM PDT

Good point Maka, but I think it may only add to my speculation. There is no doubt that in the Halo (1) you played as the MC in MP. Why not refer to the Spartans in Halo 2 MP as so? Also, I still think it's a render from campaign mode, and I guess I'm alone on that:)

Sorry to burst any bubbles but I can add some insight into the render of which you speak. I added that render to the site and I added the caption. We never refer to the characters in a multiplayer game as "Master Chief." It's always been Spartans vs. Elites as there is only one Chief. In this case, it's just a harmless caption that is in no way meant to imply the existence or non-existence of anything. =)

 • 07.01.2004 1:05 PM PDT

Oh yea, the reference to the E3 demonstation adds more fuel to my fire. They refer to the Spartan as A Spartan. As far as we, "the public," have been made aware of, there is only one specific Spartan in the game... Master Chief.

excellent theory. in my opinion, though, ackerson isn't working on a new batch of spartans (cheif mendez left right after harvest to work on another group of spartans, so that is another possiblity), but is working on some kind of a chemical/biological weapon to use against the covenant.

oh yeah, and it was linda that was in cryo.

Sketch, maybe you clear something else up for me:)

You kind of address this in your post, but being more specific, is this render taken from MP or campaign mode?

Of more note was that Ackerson's files clearly illustrated a keen interest in the flash clones that were used to replace the Spartans after they were abducted from their homes.

Ackerson followed the life spans of the 75 clones, paying attention to what caused them to fail and die.

Combine that with Ackerson's interest in the Dr. Halsey's files on the current batch of Spartans, particularly in their genetic failings and the most likely result is that the Spartans who died at Reach shall live again, cloned and genetically corrected to perfectly match the augmentations done to them.

In MP you dont play as an MC, MC is from the campaign mode only, cant have a buncha Clones runnin around..in MP you play as a Spartan...like Spartans Vs. Elites, its not Mcs Vs. Elites..the white spec ops spartan..it uhh, debatable whether or not its Ackerson's batch, ive read the books also, as i read tho...that thought never came to mind, doesnt seem like enough backin up to me, also, this may be OVER THOUGHT just a bit...either way, i thinks its a MP render, not a scrnshot

 • 07.01.2004 1:13 PM PDT

Yea, I was thinking along those lines. I'm just looking for "eye candy" proof... if you know what I mean:)

so, he's recloning the spartans? to increase they're numbers? i don't think that's likely, since he's got such a hatred of the spartan program. he is likely to be working on something completly different

One other thing. I remember reading somewhere, may have been an update, that the MP mode was supposed to be related to the Campaign mode much more than in Halo (1)... other than location. If then, the MP is to be related to the Campaign mode in Halo 2, then wouldn't there be some sort of tie in explaination as to why there are Spartans other than the MC?

Well, the thing in the article that could point to more Spartans is the part where he says "and other dudes." I would consider other dudes to possibly mean other Spartans.

I think that we might be onto something, since Sketch is trying to tell us that the article means nothing... lol j/k

Yes, he hates the Spartans with a passion. However, we are uncertain as to specifics. Notice that he also hates Dr. Halsey. It could entirely be that he was jealous of Halsey and Section III's success. Remember, the Master Chief is neither Navy, nor Marine.

Ackerson's new Spartan's, if that is what he's making, would be wholly marine and totally under his thumb.

What Ackerson desires most is power and recognition. Should his Spartans come in and save Earth then he would be Earth's greatest hero ever. Imagine the glory of being forever immortalized. *clenches fist* It would be glorious.

Now, if he knows what's going on and isn't bringing out his Spartans until the last moment then I'm going to personally rip him a new hole.
