Long, but good:)
Many of us who have read First Strike have been led to believe that Ackerson is up to something BIG. Being a bit more specific, many people believe that he has started a Spartan program of his own. Quotes from the book such as, "Something extrodianry had just been revealed - there was some kind of backup plan on par with the Spartan program, and Ackerson was behind it," and "He had heard of Ackerson's alternative program to the Spartan-IIs" have been used as support for these accusations. No picture, info, nor interview, that I'm aware of, has been given on the subject of a possible secret unit of Spartans. I think the recent release of the OXM screens and renders may hide a few clues pertaining to this Subject.
First off, the last statement of the article, "There will be brand-new critters, varmints and dudes in Halo 2, but perhaps just as interestingly, new variants on old favorites," should be taken quite literal, if you ask me. In particular, the new dudes and new variants on old favorites part. I believe that statement is intended to draw your attention to the new Special Ops Elites, and possible the Temple Guard Elites. I also think that statement could mean new Spartans, but more on that in a bit.
Untill First Strike, all we new of the Spartans was that they all died in battle protecting Reach... except for Linda ( I believe ) who was frozen due to major body troma. Of course, after reading First Strike we come to find that there are survivors of the Battle for Reach. At the end of the book there are several Spartans left alive on their way to Earth, except for Kelly. According to First Strike, the Spartans are still in the familar green armor... no wardrobe change yet. So, I am left wondering this. Why is it that THIS render is titled, "A dual-wielding white Spartan." Please bare with me before you throw out you judgment.
If you notice, all the other renders of a Spartan, except for the "Dual plasma pistol goodness" have some indication of the MC in their title. Every screenshot in every magazine article or website that has had a Spartan in a screen/render has had MC in the the article or title in relation to the screen. I believe that there is a reason, however blown out of purpotion it may seem, that the render has Spartan in the title instead of MC. It's not the MC.
If it's not the MC, then that leave two groups of Spartans to fill the role. Either the surviving Spartans from Reach, or Ackerson's secret batch. I personally think that it isn't one of the Spartans from Reach because there hasn't been a wardrobe change. We know that the Spartans will get a new suit of armor, but we can gather from the E3 demo in 2003 and the plethra of screens showing the MC in the new armor that the new armor isn't white, it's still green. You might also say that it's just a Spartan from MP. I would say that it's a render, not a screenshot. Bungie isn't going to release a render of the MC from the MP graphics engine... less quality. Also, in MP you play as the MC, not other Spartans. I believe that this could be a screen of Ackerson's secret batch of Spartans. If you notice, the color scheme is almost exactly that of the Special Opps Elite, which leads me to think of Ackerson. Again, the MC's batch of Spartans don't get a color change in their new armor, as shown by all the screens released of him in the new armor. This isn't a MP shot. Look at the quality of the render compared to the screens Bungie has released from MP mode vs. the campaign mode... it's from the campaing mode graphics engine. Even if it was from MP, you still play as the MC. So, I'm left wandering who is the Spartan in this render?
Update:
What doesn't make any sense (storyline wise) is that most all MP levels in Halo (1) are on Halo. MC is the only Spartan who made it to Halo. In Halo 2 there will be atleast 16 Sparatans in MP, we know from the books that there aren't 16 of the original Spartan-IIs left. If the campaign is to be related in any way to the MP, then there should be some explaination as to why there are other Spartans! Oh, give some other explanation besides the "there can't be 12 MC's running around in MP"... I'm not an idiot:)
ALSO
This is a render, not a screenshot from MP, correct? I thought renders were computer built models of a specific character, not a generic Spartan with a million possible color schemes from a MP game. If this render is from MP, then why is it's quality the exact same as that of the Master Chief renders, which, I'm presuming from Sketch's statement, are taken from the campaign mode engine. We know that the graphics are of less quality in MP, why the same quality in this render as the MC renders taken from Campaign mode. Sorry if I'm digging a hole out of air here, but the white Spartan render looks exactly the same, quality wise, as the Master Chief renders.
