I just answered that one over at HBO. The thing is Bungie said we can blow off parts of body armor from the enemies right? Well possibly we can destroy the Grunt's own rebreathers. And since the Grunt is cowering it almost looks like that it is actually trying to put the mask back on after being shot off. Which would be a nice little layer of realism.

huge problem the marine on the back isn't wearing a mask. humans can't breathe methane so that shoots that theory.

beat me to it destructochicken :)

I recommend you guys read the rest of the thread over at HBO. It has a lot more answers and questions for you to consider.

ok if u look at the same pic but right under the BR fire u see one of those purple metal grunt tents so that means that its not the home planet with the fact that the marines dont have oxegen masks http://www.gamespot.com/xbox/action/halo2/screens.html?page=1 08

i tend to favor the theory of shooting the mask off.

  • 07.01.2004 1:07 PM PDT

yea that would be awsome

Yeah, it would be sweet to shoot off their masks. Kind of like in the books.

That would be hilarious, they'd die from the lack of methane and simply die out.

....that wasn't a good find at all. Just a cowering grunt and a bunch of nonsense theory.

And I could care less if I could shoot a grunts mask off...THEY'RE GRUNTS! Just shoot them.
Seems like a waste of memory...and for a bad reason.

it is highly unlikely that we will visit the grunt homeworld because if u fire a shot the whole godamn world blows up because the air is made up of methane and methane is highly flammable

lol... as the grunts try to protect their homeplanet, one brave grunt stands up against the humans. He raises his plasma pistols, and pushes the trigger...
...both the humans and grunts were wiped out of existance...

lol

Look around and you may learn that you need oxygen to burn the methane in. There may not be oxygen in the atmosphere of the grunt's planet.

  • 07.01.2004 3:34 PM PDT

I've got a question. If this is the Grunts home planet, and there is a methane atmosphere with no oxygen, ( Big explosion if there was ) then how are the marines in the background breathing?

Actually it wouldnt if all there was in their atmosphere was methane, remember you need oxygen to start a fire. So if there are trace amounts of it, which there probably is, then it would be one giant grenade. Otherwise it would be totally safe to fire a gun. However if you think about it you need oxygen inside the cartridge so that the gunpowder can be ignited. So that means that a fire could start with just a litte bit of oxygen, but it would probably just destroy your gun.
