I know very little about LCD. I have a ViewSonic V900-2 LCD. I have a custom rig.
ASUS P4C800-E DELUXE
2-Seagate 160GB hard drives Riad 0 (yeah baby)
2 GB PC3200 Kingston ram
ATI Radeon 9800XT
Audigy2 ZS
380 watt ATX12V power supply
Windows XP Pro

I use the DVI cable to connet monitor. I have tried all settings as low as they can go and I have a ghosting image, not just in gaming , but in windows. I replaced the 9800XT with still no improvement. I went to the ViewSonic website and checked specs, and this is where I know little about, and everything seemed to checkout alright. I have tried numerous forums. I went to CompUSA and they told me that the monitor should work fine with all settings cranked to the max. I should have researched the monitors more fully, but my shedule stinks. Could someone please tell me if this monitor is good enough to crank all the settings or if I could possible have a bad one. Any recommendations on a LCD that will work to my towers full potential.

well LCD isnt that far ahead in technology to get rid of the ghost. Unless you buy the most expensive one i believe. I suggest you go out and buy a CRT 21 incher for the price you would pay for a lcd 17 incher, and sell your current monitor on ebay. Toms Hardware just rated the newet lcd's and they too ghost. so either go plasme (also overly expensive), or go CRT like I have just recommended

DON'T go plasma, at least not yet... though plasma won't ghost, it still has a nasty tendancy to burn in images (such as the HUD) after prolonged use. Neither choice is ideal for gaming yet, though some come close if you're willing to pay the premium.

I bought a used 19" SUN CRT monitor for just over $200 CAD (about $140 USD), and it's probably got a bigger image than my 21" TV. It's easy to find a good CRT monitor for a good price these days, and unlike most computer parts buying a used monitor is fairly safe and easy to do.

-- Steve cautions you that his monitor does weigh almost 50 pounds, so desk strength (and upper body strength!) may be an issue.

Thank you both. I agree I should have done that in the first place, but I should have trusted my instincts. Dum@$$ lol. Moriarity I have seen your replies in other forums and I read the replies and seemed honest, thank you. It is hard to find people who reply honestly in forums or post reject replies. I like both of you messages" drill sargent" and " one way street" they are both tight saying and true. What do you guys recommend for a CRT monitor for my specs? I don't have much time between work, playing games, and creating levels for UT2004 and FarCry to find one that will work the best. Bye-cycle dudes or dudets? lol

Thanks for the kind words.

As far as CRT monitors go, computer power doesn't much factor into it. (As long as your video card supports the resolutions of the monitor, anyway... and with a 9800XT you should have no problems whatever the monitor you choose.)

The big factors are size, refresh rate, resolution, colour quality, and price.

* Size: bigger is better here. However, bigger also sucks up more desk space and makes the monitor heavier so make sure that your heart's delight will actually fit where you need it to go. Playing Halo on a 19" monitor is sweet, and if I'd had the budget and deskspace I'd have gone with a 21" in a heartbeat.

* Resolution: more is better here. 1024x768 pixels would be my bare minimum; it's easy to downgrade the resolution in software if you're experiencing some chug, but it's impossible to ramp up past the hardware's limit. Shoot for as high as you can get in your price range.

* Refresh rate: faster is better (bigger number in Hz), but these days it's hard to find a monitor with a bad refresh rate. Just make sure that the rate they quote is the non-interlaced rate... interlacing looks twice as fast as it is, and it makes the image look jittery sometimes. Again, the interlaced monitors are ancient stuff so you shouldn't have to worry about it.

* Colour quality: this is sort of subjective. You need to see how well the monitor reproduces colours, so have your sales-critter fire up a web browser and take a look at bungie.net screenies to see how they look. If you can find a decent online video, try that too to see if there's any residual ghosting. (There shouldn't be with a CRT, unless the ray tube is nearly shot.)

* Price: the best way is to set a budget first, because it's very easy to get into stratospheric prices if you get carried away. All the monitors available are worth the price to somebody, but perhaps that $3000 USD ultra-high resolution widescreen monitor is a tad much just to play Halo. (Though it'd be interesting to see how work would phrase the rejection of my purchase order request. Hmm...)

-- Steve hopes that this will help.

check your cord. i have seen cheap digital and analog cords cause ghosting. also too long of a cord can cause a ghost sometimes.
