Yes screenlookers take all of the fun out of the game. But a lot of the time it's unavoidable for me...because I know every damn pixel in the game, it's easy to see things without trying. It takes every drop of my concentration to stay focused on my screen.

I had a friend who was SO bad at sreenwatching we used to almost get into fistfights about it. Not because he screenwatched, but because he lied about it.

Nick: I was not I saw your spot on the Motion Tracker.
Jim: Dude, we aren't even PLAYING with the motion tracker you liar...
Nick: Oh you mean THIS time, I uh I thought you were talking about last week.
Jim: You mean on Blood Gulch when I was on sniper rock, standing still, and you shot me from the cliffside across the level? That's when I triggered your 'Motion Tracker? When I wasn't moving?
Nick: Well It showed up.
Jim: Shut the F~~~ Up you liar.

Then again sometimes it's comical when they tell the truth.

Ioannis: OOOH, I'm a SCREENWATCHER ::runs away::
Jim: You Pekkerhead!! ::Laughs::

But in a nutshell, Screenwatching IS cheating. the screen is a representation of your field of vision. They didn't put telepathy into the game, so screenwatching is illegal...

But EVERYONE I know has done it once or twice...

I decided long ago that was cheating. No ifs, ands or buts about it. I usually play LAN games though (maximum fun) on 4 TV's, 2 TVs a team, so its all good then. Hell, screen watching is condoned and commended for (if you know map layouts like the palm of your hand) in these situations (especially CTF).

Yeah, I too try to play team matches as much as possible. 4 or 8 a side, each team in a different room.

When it comes to free for alls, I make sure EVERYONE can see EVERYONE ELSE'S screen. That way the screen-looking is even and no-one really picks on anyone else on their TV because they're easy targets. Anyway, when its lots of players (8+) there usually isn't enough time to look at someone else's screen because you die a lot quicker.

I voted no and here's why...

In a game like Halo, if you're actually allowed to have multiple screens on a TV for multiplayer, it's more than encouraged to use it to your advantage. Afterall, you want to win right? If it's in the game, use it.

I guarantee you that everyone who voted Yes screenwatches still, even though they consider it "cheating".
To me, cheating is hacking into a game of multiplayer and putting an infinite ammo and/or health cheat/code so you won't be harmed at all.
Though screen looking is a means to not die, it doesn't mean you're in God mode does it? You're still able to die as well as your opponents.

If it's such a cheating method, they might as well remove multiplayer on Halo and leave it strictly for LAN play... think about it.

And for games such as poker, obviously your playing a game of chance, so looking at your opponents cards is cheating obviously... because one individual is playing without seeing cards while the other is. The point of that game is to play without knowing literally what your opponent holds.

I believe screen watching is cheating, but I can usually beat screenwatchers anyway. It's so satisfying to kill one of my friends after they look at my screen and think "Oh, now I can get him because I watched his screen!", which is far from the truth.

Exactly, just because a player screen wtaches does not mean he has _the_ upper hand.
He could be a scrub and screen watch, but the experienced player knows what to do...

And speaking of scrubs, I have a very intresting website to point to you guys about what "Cheating" truly is in videogames...

I'll have to post it later when I get home. Unless of course someone knows the site I'm speaking of.

It's not so much cheating as cheap, if you ask me. It's not really an 'honourable' way to play, although I wouldn't really call it cheating. It makes sniping interesting, especially on Boarding Action.

If there is an advantage expliot it. If person A does it to you, do it to him. Cheat is what everyone can do successfully in a certain aspect. The aspect is the game yet some people can't do it. I have a friend who can only focus on one thing at a time and when he screen watches he stops completle. Thats when I kill him.

  • 07.13.2004 11:47 AM PDT

There is nothing wrong with looking at other's screens if they are on the same TV as you. Everyone else does it so you have to too. And, a wins a win, so do what you have to, to secure victory. It is cheating if someone goes out of their way to go to another room in a LAN party to look at your screen.

I only screen watch my own team. Its easier than asking where they are because some of them don't know the match that well. With looking at team mates screens its like having 4 eyes.

The odd occasion my eyes may wonder to an oppenants in a free for all, but it usually doesn't finish with their death. That's mainly because my free for alls are 16 player games, so you're dead by the time you look at someone else's screen to hunt them.

Screenwatching is not cheating because you don't have an advantage. The other player can do it too. Now, if you could somehow see his screen, and he couldn't see yours, that's cheating. Thats also why I look at the ground when I'm sneaking up on somebody.

No If someone's hiding in a hole somewhere then you should look at his screen and take him out. But if you thinks someone's coming up behind you then it would be cheating. But if you think someone's behind you then you should turn around or move away from the area. That's why I always carry a shotgun when I'm sniping.

I think screen looking is inevidable.

Think of it this way:

If not screen looking is mutual respect.

then...

Screen looking is mutual disrespect.

Either way, no one is gaining any advantage over anyone else.

So what's the problem?
