This subject is not to discuss the Forerunner legacy, but the subject of that legacy has thrown people into a pointless debate. But here's one for the people who argue science says this.
"Halo IS NOT REAL (For a given value of real). ;) It exists in it's own universe, so it doesn't actually have to correspond to our own..." Fifthsboy
This universe we speak of in Halo is taking place in our same universe we live in now. This is not a purely fiction storyline. It is a science fiction, and must follow the rules of being science fiction. Everything inside the storyline MUST be possible and rationally produced.
Neglect of those guidelines will result in a story that does not appeal to the general populous due to a lack of reality. We escape for the lack of reality in a SCI-FI novel. Yet if the author tells us, THIS is what happened, and it can't be true then the reader loses interest.
We may want the Forerunner to be human, but if Bungie says they are direct ascendants of humans and don't give perfectly hard evidence that the Forerunner were humans, then it becomes more speculation and not satisfying. Without satisfaction, the recipient of the story then becomes frustrated and loses interest. Forcing the Forerunner speculation will result into a blemish on Bungies’ record.
Fantasy Fiction is the genre that could push the Forerunner idea. Set in an unrealistic and unbelievable world with variables that could change the history of Earth or the ancestory of mankind. Say another dimension where the founder of Atlantis on Earth dropped off humans. Problem with though must say that Atlantis is over a billion years old to comply with the Forerunner theory. That and Atlantis/Forerunners would have existed before hominids came to light (There's my bias in this debate).
Fantasy would be able to admit this by saying this great civilization came to a barren planet and planted in the soil fossil records and stratigraphy to ensure that evolving sentient life would eventually discover these records and believe that they were part of erratic evolution but were actually guaranteed life by another form of life from elsewhere, still not satisfying for this type of storyline.
So it would be greatly appreciated if those posting on the forums would respect speculation and the components of the story by not neglecting the fact that this story is a Science Fiction, and must follow the laws of science. Halo cannot be its own universe; it's a fictional story in the future of our real universe.
