Hey Bungie, i got banned for no reason. I havent done any: cheating, boosting, rude or offensive behavior or anything like this. I was playing matchmaking, and after the match it said i was temporary banned from earning credits. It also gave me a website to go to, so i went their and checked why i was banned and it gave me all the possible reasons, and i wasnt breaking any of them.. I was just playing with my brothers and the pop-up came up and said it. I would really like one of you guys to look into it and un-ban me, or at least tell me why i got banned over Christmas break for no reason. I missed out on a lot of credits, and i want to get them back eventually. Thank you...But PLEASE actually listen to me, unlike the webmaster. i live in Tacoma, Washington so i could easily come to the studios if you need.

No.

You can still play the game. That's all that you should require.

Hi webmaster

I know you get lots of requests. I hope you can get to this one. My son (Demitrius Kalergis aka Toastmanburns) has been teaching me to play Halo Reach 3. I'm not very good and so when I play as his guest I never (3 days of playing) get more than one or two kills. I do move around the battlefield constantly, not very well, but I'm just learning. Since he started teaching me, he has been banned from accumulating credits. I suspect it is some computer generated thing based on my poor playing.

I spend a lot of money on all this stuff. :) You are in effect, depriving my son of the use of the points I spend a lot of money for. I don't think my son (or anyone) should be penalized because they have a guest who plays actively, but is just lousy at it. LOL

From other posts, this seems to be a glitch in the system. I understand why you must have measures to protect the integrity of the game for everyone, but this needs some tuning up. IMHO

I see many other similar complaints on line. Is something being done about this? What can we do differently? Maybe there should be a training module that a new player must pass before actively participating in games.

Thanks for any help or insight your might have on this.

Cordially,

George Kalergis

"George",

This may come off as harsh, but if you want advice then here it is. Your son didn't get banned for you playing with him and was 99.9% for sure banned for a legitimate reason. The banning system is excellent and I do not know of a single case where it banned someone improperly. Now that we've gotten that out of the way, let's move on.

First things first. I can't find your son (Toastmanburns) or his service record on here. That makes it hard to see if he did anything obvious wrong while playing the game that may have caused the ban.

Without getting into a huge, long explanation for which I am not getting paid for (so I'm not going to do), you're wasting your time posting here and you're not going to get this ban overturned. If you really want to push the envelope, you can find a moderator (search the site or old posts, I'm not doing your work for you) and message them. Please know that if your son was in fact banned for a correct reason, the length of his ban will be increased as a penalty for wasting someone's time. Please also know that Bungie is on vacation still (I believe) so I would not expect immediate attention.

Nothing is being done about this. When you play with your son, if you're learning the game then do not play on Live. Just play local while disconnected from live and you can learn like that. Once you have the basics down, then go online. If you would like a training module, then play campaign by yourself first on Easy difficulty, then on Normal difficulty, then on Heroic difficulty, and then finally on Legendary difficulty. Once you have finished this (or "passed" this), then you may play online with other players and you should do well. There is no training module that will make you a good player in 30 minutes.

Finally, your son is not entitled to any points or anything else for that matter. Here, you have no rights. If you do not like something that happens in this game, you are more than welcome to put down the controller and walk away forever. I personally plan on sticking around as I find the rules to be very fair. I play the game because I enjoy playing the game. I do not play the game for imaginary credits or ranks.

Hope all this helps.

Saleden,

Look. I'm not going to sugarcoat any of this. You were correctly banned. I looked at your last game before you were banned, and 5 of the 8 players were guests. The top scorer had 22 of their 25 kills as melee, and the other players had a similar situation. Looks like your other players were standing around and you were just killing them, aka full party boosting. The game before that? Same story. And this continues for the games before this, so I'm just going to close the case on this one. Your ban was fair and justified. Earn your credits by playing the game the right way. If you have extra controllers standing around, that's not playing the game the right way. If you think Bungie at one point said full party boosting was okay, they never said you could full party boost with idle guests. You can full party boost with real, live human beings. Being idle in Halo has always been against the rules though and always will be.

PS You are lucky that someone from Bungie did not look into this for you and check the second page of your game history. If they had, the length of your ban would have just doubled because you claimed you were innocent when you were in fact very guilty.

PSPS If you want to play with your "brothers" then you should not be connected to live when you do it. Also, it doesn't count as having a brother when you pick up your idle controller and make sure it gets a handful of kills while your main character stands around because you're too busy playing with the previously mentioned idle controller character. Ooh. That made my head hurt.

I have no doubt he deserved it. I just want to find out what it is he did so I can make sure it doesn't happen again.

Best advice I can give you is make sure he plays the game as it's meant to be played. If he is getting banned, he's smart enough to be cheating in some way. If you are unable to see what he is doing wrong (and you wouldn't be able to if you're not an experienced player) and correct his behavior, the banhammer will identify the activity and take corrective action for you.

No one has ever been banned for legitimately playing the game as it was meant to be played.

I think the banhammer is a little extreme. I was unaware that playing with my son, who is 9 and not very good at games yet, would lead to a ban on credits for the main account. Playing very badly should not be a bannable offense, though I'm sure I'll get mocked by people living in their parent's basement playing halo all day for saying that. I got a credit ban randomly as well, I assume for playing with my son, and I assume it is because instead of playing team games as we usually do, we played a few rumble pit games. Now I know that I can't risk that anymore, but seriously dude, your attitude toward people who have been banned through no fault of their own could be a little more understanding.

If you've been EXP banned, and you believe yourself to be innocent, post here. But first, let's get some nonsense out of the way:

- If you're cheating to get Achievements, you're still cheating. The banhammer is aimed at the behavior, not the intent. "I was just trying to get Yorick" won't get you out of the EXP ban.
- No, people aren't getting banned just because they play a lot with their friends. There's a difference between boosting and actually playing with friends, and we can tell the difference.
- If you haven't been banned, you won't see a message that says you have. Be careful that you did not confuse what we call the "nag message" that we introduced after TU2 with a ban message. Don't try to stir people up by claiming to be unjustly banned when you are not.
- All EXP bans given out so far are considered "first offense" bans. Two weeks is the duration for a first offense. The degree and duration of ban increases if you're caught cheating again.
- As is said on http://www.bungie.net/ban, it is not our problem if it is your brother, cousin, best friend, mom, dad, girlfriend, boyfriend, or kitten that got your console banned. If it turns out that your gamertag is suffering from their wrongdoing, that is an issue you'll have to take up with them.
- If you are "not sure" if you've been banned, then you haven't been. People who get banned are notified very clearly.

That should cover it. Post away! Keep it civil. People who get belligerent about their ban, especially when it's justified, are just going to get themselves in more trouble.

[Edit] One other thing: This is now the ONLY thread for discussion on EXP bans. Any new threads created to argue a ban will get locked.

BrianOShea,

People are always trying to cheat and push the envelope as much as they can. Unfortunately, so many people have lied about "their son was playing and isn't good" or "their little brother was playing" that now if something like that actually happens, people are very skeptical. The banhammer is dead-on accurate and does not miss or hit incorrectly. I still took a peek at your past game history though, just for kicks and giggles.

Your guest account, over six games on the fifth, accounted for 3 kills and 68 deaths.

Your guest account, over five games on the fourth, accounted for 24 kills and 40 deaths.

One of these seems like a live person playing. The other seems like it was just a controller laying around that you picked up 3 times to make a quick kill before putting it back down again. Just saying.

The warrant officer mountain is a tough hill to climb, but stick with it and you'll be over it in no time. The ranks get easier for a little bit after WO and don't slow down again until about Commander.

Finally, anyone who follows the rules does not fear the banhammer. These people tend to not be so understanding towards the people that do bend the rules.

I got a perma ban on my account and a 3 month ban on my console today. I think it was from the derankers i kept on getting in doubles. here are the games I played today. Game 1, game 2, game 3, game 4. I didnt even get to start the fourth game it kicked me out. I know I have been banned before, this time I didn't deserve it.

Also, for any "children"/"little brothers"/whatever else, etc, solo campaign disconnected from xbox live is a great option. Then if they get distracted by a shiny object and walk away from the game, you'll only be sitting idle in your own game. And, since they're disconnected from xbox live (which you hopefully have password protected), they can't sneak on matchmaking and get you banned.
