Ok, a mate of mine has managed to screw up his halo, and seeing as hes the only one in our clan with a decent net connection, we're pretty worried ;) The only thing related to halo that hes touched is a ded hack, and he didnt even use it, he has since uninstalled it and played about 3 games. What happens is he can load up the menu, but the second he tries to load up the actual engine it crashes, just as if he'd clicked exit. He's re-installed both CE and PC. Any ideas people?

Heyyo,

Hmm, it might be spyware. I've had comps that had huge probs due to spyware n' after I cleaned them out they worked fine. So it's always good to get those out. ;)

Does the error message pop up after it crashes? if so what does it say?

What vidcard does he have? if it's a 256mb one and he has windows xp with SP2 installed he might need the fix for that, check the stickey thread. Cause you guys said his game messed up only recently eh? So yeah, check your vidcard. do this to check:

Start > Run > dxdiag

wait for it to load, then click the "Display" tab, and check the "Approx. Total Memory". That's usually accurate.

He has scanned, and his hardware is irrelevant, as are his drivers. He was able to play the game about half an hour before it started screwing about. PC version still works fine, but the second he tries to load up the engine in CE it crashes back to desktop, there is no error message, its as if he just clicked quit.

uh oh....someone's hard drive is about to go 'splody!!!
ok, the only thing that truly comes to mind is maby it's a sign that his harddrive is about to stop working. how old is it (if it's less than a month old, or more than3 years old, this is most likely the case) before my old HD broke, i got wierd stuff like this all the time.
