We all know that in Halo CE Captain Keys gets captured by the flood and infected into the big ugly flood thing which does nothing, but could that thing grown so fast to the size of Gravemind?

There wasn't one. The Flood may have been building one on that Covenant cruiser they tried to take over. They built a brain form (the thing that Keyes was inside of) and were gathering more bodies in the various rooms around the ship. My guess is those bodies were going to be used to feed a gravemind entity. However it never really happened as the Flood never finished their creation.

or...

What if that thing the Flood made on that ship was just a brain form designed to pilot the ship. The Flood seemed hell bent on getting off Halo. Up until now I simply assumed that was just the way the Flood is. They seek ways to spread and what not.

However I have been thinking lately that maybe the Flood wanted to go to Delta Halo to free the Gravemind there.
Taken from here

I believe that Keyes was a Proto-Gravemind, an entity that would absorb information about Earth and it's colonies from Keyes' mind, and then pilot the Truth and Reconciliation back to Earth.
The Master Chief punched through Captain Keyes' head, probably stopping the Flood from absorbing the information.
The T&R with the Proto-Gravemind inside was destroyed when Installation 04 was destroyed.

I think. ;)

If I remember right, in the book "The Flood" it says that keyes is fighting off the Gravemind/Infection process that takes your memories. He is trying to keep a hold on his own thoughts, trying to prevent the Flood/GM from "reading his mind". As far as what the book says, he did that until MC pulled his chip out.

Captain Keys was awesome.

Doc: "i'm a pacifist"
Caboose: "your a thing that babies suck on?"
Tucker: "no dude, that's a pedephile"
Church: "tucker, i think he means a pacifier"

yea i do believe that he was going to made into one, however MC ended that, if not with the fist through the face then definately with the destruction of the ring. the existing gravemind in the sequals is something entirely different.

but in the book it says that McKay wanted to take Jenkins to Earth and the other marine armed a grenade killed Jenkins and destroyed the controls to The Truth and Reconciliation thus the ship crashed. So no Proto/Gravemind was ever made.

If I don't see you, good afternoon, good evening, and good nite.

Yup. The ship was busted by a grenade so the Truth and Reconciliation could not return to Earth. Also, Chief did grab Keyes's neural lace through his skull. And the ring did explode.

The mass of flood that consumed Keyes was certainly not the gravemind from Halo 2 and Halo 3.

As above said, he was a proto-gravemind. The ring blew up. He would have blown up to. But then again, Johnson got off. There is a slim chance... like 0.00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 00000001
to 1000.

Johnson escaped on a Pelican, along with an ONI Lieutenant, a Helljumper, and the dropship's pilot. Read: "Halo: First Strike".

When the T & R's reactor blew, it exploded with plasma. And guess what? Plasma burns the surface, and if it penetrates, things simply cease to exist.

I know, i've read the books (Pretty good books) But it still could have survived. I personally don't think it did, but it could have somehow.

It was on board the T & R. In either case, if the Marines captured & repaired it as per the novel, or if it simply blew up, the thing never left the ship. In either case, the ship would have exploded, and it couldn't escape without teleporting, and it did not have a Monitor to help it do so.
