Today, the motherboards get more complicated each day. Now, the type of motherboard needed depens on the user. if he is an intense gamer, he should get a pci express motherboard. If he is a casual user, he shiould use agp 8x.

Some chipsets that are good for pci express is
Nforce 4 chipset
Via KT890 Pro
Nforce 4 SLI ( only for the most intense gamers)
intel 915g

All of the chipsets mentioned above aree only for AMD 64 939 socket processors except one intel processor. One more thing, all thses chipsets above should have a fan for the chipsets mainly because they are very powerful and fast. if it doesn't have a fan DO not buy it!

Now, for the casual, get mobos with thses chipsets:
nforce 3 mobo
Via KT800
nforce 2 mobo(socket A not that good these days, but really hot deal.)
Via KT600(socket A)
intel 875
intel 865
These chipsets are only for AMD 754 and intel socket processors.
Note: thhe nforce 2 may be a little slow but should be okay.

Now, things to look for when buying mobos. Be sure to check the data transfer rates between in the motherboard. usually something like 800 mega hertz. One more thing, be sure to know the CPU socket type. The mobo u buy should have at least an agp slot or there's no point in getting it. Also, motherboards come with features such as dualchannel dual bios. These are the things that'll increase performance alot. Motherboards have also got quite cheaper nowadays and its a perfect time to buy one right now, if u are interested in upgrading ur pc.

Lastly here are some good motherboard manufactururs:
ASUS ( highly recommended but expensive)
Gigabyte Tech. ( Very Good deals and yet very powewrful)
Abit ( Speed)
DFI(Very nice)
MSI(stable, but requires some work before its stable)
Soyo( okay but not best)

here are some manufacturer's NOT to get: they may be cheap but not as good
ECS
Chaintech
Soltek
Foxconn(average but definately not the best)
Epox( if u are dumb enough to get one of those, i am gonna punch u so hard for being so stupid.
here are some excellent model numbers
ASUS: a8n-e
a8n-sli
a8v-e
a8v deluxe
gigabyte:
ga-k8n9
ga-k8n-sli
Msi:
Neo 2 Platinum

Yeah, you need to put that the MSI nForce 4 boards are tweaky. They don't run that well, and require a lot of BIOS tweaks before they're stable.

Really:

nForce 2: Slower, ageing, it's virtually dead.
nForce 3: Still hot with AGP, no dual channel RAM
nForce 4: Awesome with AGP, good with PCI-e, DC RAM
nForce 4 SLI: SLI cards, that's about it
VIA K8T88 was awesome for the s754. Ran cool, ran strong, OC'd well.

Recall that the above are for AMD systems, although SiS does both Intel/AMD, they are mediocre in my mind and not worth it.

nForce 4 Ultra motherboard recommendations:
Abit Fatality
Asus A8N Deluxe
DFI LANParty

Questionable:
MSI NEO2/4 Platinum
Gigabyte GA-K8N

Ones to avoid:
Chaintech VNF4 Ultra
Epox, ECS, anything from them

What's worth mentioning is the above are socket 939 boards. Some socket 939 boards support AGP, other PCI-e. All other previous sockets such as 754 and A support AGP.

No, you just edited it to have that...

DFI's new boards are good, but there older ones are iffy. They suddenly came out of the dark and rocked the scene with nForce 4.

The only PCI-express boards that are on the market right now use an nVidia chipset. So you'll have to drop your dislike of them. Really, they are very good now, nForce 2 was a bit iffy as was nForce 3, but 4 is solid.

A good board is the DFI one, $130 or below. The Chaintech motherboard, err it's $90, but you WILL get what you pay for. It sucks. Utterly.

DFI LANParty is the way to go, gives you a lot of good stuff too, many cables and good software.

sexy!!!!!! i'm astonished! for the first time u are not correct! VIA has just released the K8T890 pro, and it has pci express.
heres the site:
http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/chipsets/k8-series/k8t890/ copy and paste this onto ur I.E bar.

i'm disapointed in u sexy but for the first time you're WRONG!

even though i think u should go nvidia ironfist, u can get that via k8t890 shipset. ASUS has this new model called a8v-e . search for it on pricewatch.com
