Thats because .50 rounds are becoming the new standard in the sniper rifle classification.

There are two groups of people in the world - those that hope, and those that wish. The first group hopes that nothing bad will happen. The second group wishes that they are there when it does. Which one are you?

The Barret .50 sniper rifle is anything but standard. The Marines use their own version of the Remington 700 (usually a .308 or some type of Mag) and is a step up from the Army's version of the 700. Only a few Marine Scout/Snipers and Special Forces units use the Barret, although, to an overwhelmingly successful end.

Most of my friends who are army are all Infantry or Airborne for the US, and for Canada, they are Armored Recce or Infantry, and none of the guys I know with the exception of some of my superiors have SQs. We are all use to using the C7A1 standard issue service rifle.

erm..to end this "i know more 'bout teh gunz than u do"....
yea, 7.62mm= .308 and 5.56mm= .223

to stay on topic, though, if you go check out the screen with the Battle Rifle closeup (go to halo2 then screens, its the second screen I believe) its kind of hard to see, but it does have KAT (or maybe Kal, cant tell) 9.5x40mm, plus a few Japanese characters. And for a point of reference, a .50 cal is equivalent to 12.7mm. So the battle rifle is between a 7.62 AR (such as an AK) and a .50 cal rifle (M82 or the civilian AR-50)

MasterChief420 about summed up what I was going to say. If you want to see the inspiration for the Halo sniper rifle, take a gander at the Mechem NTW-20 over at world.guns.ru. That site is priceless when it comes to knowing your guns, but be warned that it doesn't cover everything, and it doesn't even touch heavy weapons like flamethrowers or my personal favorite the PzF 3-T.

In any case, whoever thinks 7.62x51mm is big for an assault rifle is mistaken. Older rifles like the G3 and FAL use it exclusively, it was only later replaced by the 5.56x45mm round. Also, just in case you're casual about it, the AK series does NOT fire the 7.62mm NATO round, it's a shorter 7.62x39mm. And, the Dragunov doesn't either - it's a slightly longer 7.62x54mm round. You've got to watch out for those Russian guns if you're going to memorize these kinds of things...
