I only play legendary campaign, no co-op, but I would wager the tactics are not that different.
1-BE PATIENT. There are a boatload of flood that will spawn in front of you, right on top of you and behind you. There are many times when your motion tracker will basically be one big red blob surrounding you. The best method to survive is to always head back the direction you came from when this happens and find a corner to defend. The best way to take on the hordes is to limit their ability to come at you from all sides. By backtracking to a corner you can string them out and make them come at you in smaller groupings. When you try to fight them in the same area that they surround you in, you just tend to get wiped out by the carrier forms that close in from all sides.
2-Weapons combos. The shotty is a must, after that it is a matter of your pistol preference. The advantage of the human pistol is the zoom which allows you to engage from a further distance. The advantage of the plasma pistol is that when used properly it never needs a reload delay, and it seems to make the flood drop their weapons quicker, making them less of a threat. See below for a suggested combo for co-op.
3-Grenades. The flood are always in pursuit of your MC butt, I try not to tag combat forms that are close to me with plasmas if they already have spotted me because all that happens is they deliver the grenade back to me gift wrapped with a very short fuse. Grenades are great for flood milling about or standing around.
4-Save your ammo. For the infection forms on their own, I typically just melee to conserve ammo. If you are a fan of the AR, it comes in handy in taking them out quickly. If you are going to play coop, then one of you should have an AR just for popping the lil ones. There is more than enough ammo being dropped around to keep that person going.
5-Co-op weapon combo. One person shotty and pistol, one person needler and AR would be my guess. There are not very many rounds being dropped for rocket launchers to keep one stocked up enough to make it worth carrying once it becomes available.
The best thing about the level is that it is total carnage, which I love! The mood and music is cool, the level is dark, and if you keep shooting at GS he says some very funny things.
