An expert on this field has arrived. Okay here goes.
Elites in general do not run off the same shielding system as the Spartans. They run off a Covenant system that relies on massive coverage, but slow recharge. Spartans on the other hand run off of weaker coverage, but faster recharge. That is the firts thing.
The next thing is the difference in weapons on Campaign Mode and on Multiplayer Mode. The M6D, as an example, was one of the weapons Bungie actually made stronger inside Multiplayer. They did that for balance issues. Normally on Legendary mode it takes a total of 8 bullets from the M6D to kill the Chief, no matter where they hit. While a Gold Elite takes some 23-27 M6D bullets to kill pending on where you hit it. Besides the Covenant were always meanto to be stronger than us, it is what makes Halo (and all UNSC vs Covenant Battles) such a desperate fight.
I hope that clears some things up. And I do use plasma weapons whenever I am bored, and in Multiplayer the MA5B and SRS99C S2 AM are my primary weapons. That is what pisses people off is by dying to the good 'ol MA5B.
Lastly, don't count on the pistol being replaced. Bungie's comment in an interview at E3 this year had this.
" So can we expect the truty pistol from Halo 1 to make a return? " - interviewer
" No comment. " and said with a smile by a Bungie employee.
Besides I can hear you now complaining about the Battle Rifle when you get owned with it, so be content with what you got.
