Pretty sure he's working it. I seen somebody else complain about it, and him mentioning that he's fixing it.

I'm tempted to lock this thread due to recent events. My trust with everyone has fallen, and I am now paranoid about someone hacking something else or using a script to copy inputs or to hack someone. I would never have thought about this two days ago, but now I just dunno.

These scripts are good scripts. Don't let the trolls ruin it for the rest of us.

I can see where you are coming from but this is a very useful thread to a lot of people and besides that, where in the mains would we be able to discuss scripts and such?

I would have to suggest you do so. I stopped using Coup quite a while ago, but from what I've seen, it's gone downhill as of late. Tom seems to be quite a good sport about Coup, but I don't think he likes what's been happening with it. Stuff like people editing the Coups of others (and adding negative Coups for users that don't have one) is unacceptable. The moderators don't have the position to punish anyone for something done in Coup alone, but defamation shouldn't be allowed to happen. The least that could be done is end the support for it. So many people with coding skills collectively editing a website seems like a dangerous thing. It's just gone a bit too far in my opinion.

I don't think you should lock this thread. I think something like the most recent event could have happened without this thread and that people will find was around blockages to make sure they can spam how they want (most recently with PM spam and the image-attack).

Just a question, how do we know it was because of scripts and such? I'm just curious because you say scripts are the issue on how these people did this.

I second this post. Having this thread grants implicit Bungie approval of the script and all that it entails, including the apparently disparaging titles that have been given to some users without their consent. I think Bungie puts itself at risk of liability related to any offenses that occur within the script by allowing this thread to persist.

Just my $0.02.

but how are some of these scripts harmful?

Coup 4 has yet to be abused like this.
neither have any of the other scripts if I'm not mistaken.
This seemed more like a failure in bungie.net coding rather than any of these scripts.

After thinking about it for a bit..nevermind. I won't state my reason why, but I do have reasons for keeping this open. Move along. However, I do feel some changes should take place. I'll post more about it tomorrow.

I'm pretty sure that none of the scripts that have been posted here are harmful, but some (due to the way they've been created) definitely have the capability to... well... turn on you and then harm you.

If a script that you install imports functions remotely, those remote scripts can at any point be changed by anyone who has access to them - Coup is one example of a userscript which is designed this way.

Anyway...

What do you guys think of having scripts "approved" by others before they're posted here for the general populace to install and use?

What I'm talking about is maybe using a group (Greasemonkeys) to setup a kind of "review" process. If a script is deemed to be "safe", then it can go ahead and be posted here in this thread for others to utilise.

That seems like a fairly reasonable idea but how would the submission process go?

Some of the scripts probably do need to go. I mean, I enjoyed my Coup for a couple months before Coup 3 went offline, but the idea of a script being hosted by another user's online server... that really is just asking for someone to sneak into it. Obviously, stuff like "Bungie.net Theme for Firefox" and "Post Per Day" poses no threat, but some of this stuff is exploitable.

In fact, if Coup continues into the next version, I might just activate it, but just have my avatar, titles, and colors to exactly what they normally would be. If it ever got messed with, I'd know pretty quickly.

I think the best way would be an open review process within the group. If anyone has any concerns, they can jump-in on the process at any time.

Who says the members of that group are to be trusted?

Who says the members of that group are to be trusted?
Nobody.

But then, who's says that any scripts that are posted here, now, can be trusted?

Nobody.

If a script can be reviewed by others and deemed to be "trusted" by the [scripting] community (or parts thereof), then it's better than no review at all, or even the possibility of someone posting a link to a script here, advertising it as "Coup V10", and it ends up sending users' WLID details off to a database somewhere.

But regardless of anything I've said, at the end of the day, it's your choice to install something into your browser/computer; nobody else's.

I just think that having these things posted and supported here (albeit through the threads and/or groups and not directly by Bungie; I'm aware of that) creates implicit approval and a potential liability for Bungie should someone find a way to use them for malicious purposes. Someone hacks the hosting server and modifies the scripts to do something malicious, or the reviewers overlook a piece of malicious code, whatever. Being an auditor by trade, I just see a big risk and not much reward for Bungie itself.

But will Jack Thompson see it that way? :-P

It is upon the user to deem what scripts are safe and what are not. But the side-note here that affects the end users' judgment is that this is a top topic. This thread is accepted here. It gives the false impression that all user scripts posted here are supported by Bungie in some way or another, which is untrue.

Coup 3 is bad. It was only a matter of time before it turned sour. It is now offline and that was a good call, although people will miss it.

I'm all for locking it. It would be a wise decision until you uppers figure out a submission and reviewing system in the greasemonkey group. If there were any sort of trolls that knew how to code and hack up a storm, they'd be smart enough to do it right, and unsuspectingly. Honestly, who would download a script from someone they barely know?

The greasemonkey group is half-dead, and this solution can hit two birds with one stone. Create a review thread, and some select "scripters" will be allowed to review scripts as they come in.

You can't trust anything from anybody, but the review process is just a filter. You would rather have that filter in your air conditioner catch the dust and dirt, and not waiting for that dirt to enter the house.

1. Create Greasemonkey Review Thread In GM Group

2. This Topic Needs Action
a. Start A Brand New "Script Central" Thread
b. Lock This Temporarily

The concerns surrounding this topic need to be dealt with.
