Warning, my ranting is quite legnthy.
Hey, I'm still on page 6, but I just thought of something. When someone mentioned the 52 degree thing and how bungie likes the number seven, it made me think about all the other things bungie did with seven. like 343GS is 7x7=343, etc.
The Covenant has seven species: Grunt, Jackal, Elite, Hunter, Brute, Prophet, and Engineer. How does one get into the Covenant by the way? Does a species have to meet some sort of technological requirement, software capabilities, number of nostril hairs, etc.... Whatever it is, what if Humans meet this requirement? But, the Covenant find the number seven holy. Or even something else, the number eight their equivilant of unholy? This would cause them to not want humans into the Covenant.
Along with nostril hairs, my guess is that there has to be some sort of relation to the Forerunner, in any way whatsoever; be it direct lineage, or fossilized poop. My guess is that it has to do with the crystals that the novels focus on. In FoR, on the planet John origionated from, the crystal leads to the planet Threshold, more importantly, Halo 04. And when the Covenant get to Reach, they find the "Slipspace Crystal" as I like to call it. If I was Covenant, a species living on these planets with these crystals on it would make me wonder if they're stockpiling them on their home planet.
Now assuming that the Covenant had rumors going around about this huge weapon called Halo, and they saw the Pillar of Autumn enter slipspace right to it, and they didn't want Humans in the Covenant because of their unholyness, then this would put them in quite a predicament. Humans knew, in their point of view, of Halo, giving them reason to be in the Covenant.
After the destruction of Halo 04, MC flies outbound and eventually turns back to find Covenant cruisers and a flagship. Because of the nature of the flagship, I would have to assume that the small fleet jumped in minutes before the destruction of Halo. By then, they should have reports of all that has happened with the flood and the crew of the Autumn. If I was in the Covenant, and saw the destruction of Halo, I would assume that it was the Humans who destroyed Halo, which indeed happened. Wouldn't it appear that Humans, who the covenant weren't letting into their ranks, destroyed something that the covenant was having a difficult time with? That would make it appear that Humans had a closer relationship to the Forerunner than they previously thought.
bleh, sorry, I just kinda kept on ranting.
Back on subject, my guess as to why the covenant haven't glassed earth yet is the SuperMACs orbiting Earth. Either that, or the covenant are beginning to believe more and more that Humans are their Gods, and they're trying to search their planet for proof that they are.
And I dont believe that anyone has said that it's not only Africa that is being attacked by the Covenant. My guess, is that it's just in Africa, where the plot is going to be the best.
I do believe some would call this, brain food.
