Damn straight it's old school ;)

Remember though, by raw numbers the Johnny-come-latelys have us old-school bungiefen beaten. We make up for it with quality, tenacity and sheer age.

... and being crotchety never hurt either.

Oh yeah, and we can always bust out the tr0 sp3k cuz OMG TINY KIK U IN DA HED MB.

Not to mention, we're among the few that know what the below sounds like =)

bah

A lot of the runner-ups were old-school. You could use any one of those. Can you get any more old school than 7?

And I'm sorry, but there is no way I'd put this one in with the worsts. It's just too darn funny.

Personally, I think the "rock 'em-sock 'em" avatar should be available for folks' use here... I still get a nostalgic grin whenever I see it.

Oh, and for the self-proclaimed "old skoolers" bellyaching for more "old skool" avatars, I'm going to repeat myself here. There's nothing stopping you from making some! There's even a dedicated email address for avatar submissions that goweb posted up: 7themes@bungie.com. Use it. If you don't, you forfeit your right to bellyache.

(Sheesh, "old skool" indeed. From what I saw of the old-school fan network, they wouldn't have demanded that other people do more for them; they'd have done something about it themselves. C'mon, your Mom still chew your food for you?)

-- Steve's starting to think he can out-school the "old skool"... please prove him wrong!

Where did you get that from?

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

I agree with Rip. Ultimafire's avatar should not have been put in the "worst" section.

Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots is awesome. Who here hasn't played it as a kid! I defy you to say you haven't!

Same here too... I don't even know what kind of "consolation prize" is coming up. But I'm mellow with the wait; it's a Sunday evening, and it's the American Independance Day, so I'm not expecting a PM until Tuesday or Wednesday after the holiday rush settles down and everybody's back at the desks.

Besides, the prize is a windfall anyway. I'll be happy whenever I get it. No hurry.

-- Steve's just going to kick back, relax, and wait patiently. (With a little help from Mr. Sleeman...)

No, the even cooler bungie.net t-shirt, as modelled by Frankie in The Gallery.

It's easy for you to say, but Guess who has MS Paint? Me! That's sure stopping me from making some. If you give me a copy of Photoshop, I would be glad to make an avatar, but that's piracy.

Well, that'd slow things down a bit I guess. But it doesn't have to be a show-stopper.

I use Paint Shop Pro which is a heck of a lot less than Photoshop (at $84 USD for a downloadable version, versus $649 USD for Photoshop) and has virtually everything I imagine I'd use. There's a 30-day trial version, if all you want to do is crank out one or two avatars.

A search under "gif editor" in Google brought up Webimage as a less expensive alternative for creating web graphics, at $39.95 USD. I believe this has a free trial too, but check the web site to make sure.

As an alternative, you can keep using Paint to generate the images and use Graph-X viewer to convert it from BMP to GIF. That's available for $30 USD.

Last ditch that I can offer right now is a freeware GIF/JPG editor running online at http://www.myimager.com/ if you can endure the advertising. I haven't tried to import a screen capture into it, but at least it's something.

Then there's always poking around c.net or download.com for image editor software; you never know what you might find.

-- Steve'd poke around there himself for more suggestions to make, but his eyes are starting to cross with sleep deprivation.

For graphic work, there are additional options. If you're going to spend $84 on Paint Shop Pro, spend a little more and grab Photoshop Elements. Consider it Photoshop's cool, younger brother.

As far as really cheap solutions, the GiMP is going to get you a lot of mileage. Consider it Photoshop's hot second cousin. Mac version Other version(s).

Spending the $700 on Photoshop isn't something I'd recommend to casual users. Photoshop Elements is always a solid investment though.

Of course, you should always tip your bartender, don't let friends drive drunk, and never do commercial work on pirated software. It's bad juju.

Thanks, El B. I forgot about GiMP... I was trying to remember the freeware editor, but sleep deprivation turned it into the mental equivalent of a wet bar of soap.

I also forgot about Photoshop Elements because it wasn't out when I first picked up PSP (v.3!). And once I went down the JASC road, I didn't look elsewhere when time came to update. I have heard good things about it though, so add it to the list for consideration.

Anyway, there are many alternatives to Adobe's 800lb gorilla out there that are much more within reach of the typical home user. Give 'em a shot!

(And remember that it doesn't have to look super-clean-cut to do well... just look at One-One-Se7en and Mister Chief! But not for too long.)

-- Steve agrees that use of pirated software leads to termites-in-me-leg syndrome.
