I used to play Halo 1 PC, and I personally think Halo 2 Vista is better. This joining problem I have only occurs in about 10% of all servers I see, and there's like 40 different servers at all times, so that's only 4 servers out of 40 that I can't join. There are clan servers that I enjoy immensely, and coincidentally enough, their servers lag the least.
Halo 1 PC, as you might know, has a problem with "leading", where you must lead your shots to hit your opponent. This problem is basically fixed in Halo 2 Vista, where if your recticle is on their head, you're probably gonna hit them even if they're moving. The only problem with this is the so-called "flash and miss" problem, where if you hit at the very edge of their shields, there will be a flash, and they will receive no damage, so you have to hit center-mass.
In some custom maps, there are health packs, but in all BUNGIE-made maps (aka the maps that came with the game), there are no health packs in any maps, so you never have to always worry about grabbing health.
Some remakes of Halo 1 classics, such as Coagulation from Blood Gulch and Warlock from Wizard, provide better terrain, weapon respawns, and overall better gameplay. We all know that portal camping is a massive problem on Blood Gulch, so there are big rocks near the blue portal, and trees near the red portal, and the map itself is bigger for Coagulation.
Access to a new variety of weapons like the Brute Shot, Beam Rifle, SMGs, Battle Rifle, not to mention dualing (wielding 2 weapons at once) and no more 3-headshots-from-pistol-and-you-get-owned (although the pistol in Halo 2 has no scope and is majorly underpowered, but the Battle Rifle fixes this problem...).
Melee and plasma grenade system is much MUCH better; if you're about 1 meter from your opponent and try to melee them, you'll kind of "lunge" toward your opponent, and perform the melee, thereby closing the gap between the two of you. And sticking a plasma grenade to a person during a firefight in Halo 1 was virtually impossible, but in Halo 2 it's much easier and you can actually do it from across the map (small ones).
Vehicles don't flip over as easy from grenades and plasmas (like in Halo 1, where you throw a frag in front of a Warthog so it explodes and the warthog flips). If you do the same thing, the Warthog's wheels won't even leave the ground, only receive damage. But if they hit terrain, they flip like crazy...
I got bored of Halo 1 myself since all I did was play Race in the BFM servers. I won't try to convince you to play Halo 2, since the community is actually somewhat small. But I've told you about the benefits of Halo 2 over Halo 1, so you can decide whether or not you'll like it better. And if you really want to know, look for some Halo 2 videos on Youtube, to find out what the gameplay is like.
