Why, when regiestering for a .net pasport, are you not alowed the option of puting your country as scotland? I was quite offended when it said that my country either did not exist or wa mispelt. I am Scottish and extrmely proud of it but big internet sites appear to think that my country doesn't exist. I have to constantly tell these sites I am from the UK and from a geographical point of view this is correct, but in my heart I am, and always will be, Scottish. I think bungie should update their site to allow Scottish people to identify themselves, does anyone agree?

Well, I don't think it's Bungie's decision, but I do think you should be able to use Scotland.

See Trainspotting for the truth about being Scottish ;-)

I really don't see the problem. I don't care about being grouped into the UK entity. OK, so that maybe because, in most foreigners' eyes, UK = England, but I don't see what's wrong with being classified as British rather than Scottish (or English in my case).

Actually, people care about technicalities far too much, but that's going off topic.

Hey GoWeb,

The characters -blam!-ing about being Scottish in Trainspotting were depressed Heroin addicts. The truth about being Scottish is that we come from a fiercely independent country with a distinctive culture, an incredibly rich tapestry of history and responsible for some of the greatest impact on the modern world, from economics to philosophy, from telephone to cloning. So yeah, ALBA GO BRAGH!

For the Scotland impaired, Google Alexander Graham Bell, John Logie Baird, David Hume, and just for the hell of it, Iain M. Banks.

Despite the fact that I'm just as English, twice as Quebecois and four times as Irish as I am Cornish, I still maintain a massive pro-nationalist sentiment for the region. C'mon you KNOW it would be cool; even country-within-UK status would be nice.

Regardless, you Devonians are just trying to imitate us; that White Cross on a Green Background flag of yours is a direct rip of the Cross of St. Pyrene's. Damn you! :D

I apologize for not being up on my details of the social history of the British Isles/Empire but wasn't there a period in the 19th century where the majority of native Scots were forced off of their land and massively relocated to other "lands of the realm" most notably the various Canadian provinces?

Yep, sorta, the Clearances. Though not many went directly to Canada; most (like my ancestors) decided that the dazzling sun, golden sands, and warm surf of Ireland was a better choice. (Stupid ancestors.) Then along came the Potato Blight, which (thanks to bungling and some damned short-sightedness) turned into the Famine, and at that point people decided to move somewhere else PDQ.

Actually, those ancestors of mine had a reason to avoid direct emigration; the nickname for passenger ships at the time was "coffin ships", because that's how you were likely to arrive. Try living on the North Atlantic for a month or two with nothing but sails and salt pork for an idea why.

Then again, their choice of settlement land when they finally got here (the side of a frickin' mountain... woo, yeah, real fertile soil there ya geniuses) makes me doubt my ancestors' wits again.

Or was that just something that I heard as part of a really long Monty Python sketch?
Nope, it's real. Though it makes you wonder what "historical forces" are at work to make so much ready material for satiricists.

Edit: fixing some spelling and layout boo-boos.

(emphasis mine)

Let me point out that there are possible, uh, reasons why Scots would concentrate their cloning efforts on a sheep. A ewe, even. A ewe's mammary tissue, no less.
