I am having a big problem with sapien. Every time I run it, it asks me to open a file. So I open tutorial.scenario. It pops up for a few seconds and my cursor goes away. Then it disappears. I pressed ctrl alt delete and tried it again. I noticed that my CPU Usage goes up to 60% at most and it takes up 160,000 K at most. The CPU usage history graph goes almost to the top. I am running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (5.1 Build 2600) On a Dell Vostro 1400 Laptop with 2,038 MB RAM. It has an Intel Core 2 duo processor and I have about 3,490 MB of storage left. I hope you I have given enough info in order for you to help me out.

The exact same thing happens to me. You'll just have to wait it out until it opens.

Or does Sapien crash completely?

It just closes after a few seconds

Sapien should have a log file somewhere. Find it, and see if that'll tell you anything.

I'd offer more advice, but I haven't used Sapien in nearly two years =\

Open up Sapien to where it gets to the point where you select a scenario. Press Cntrl+Alt+Delete and go to processes and find Sapien.exe. Right click " Set Affinity". Then click one of the cores. If that doesn't work, check your debug.txt and look for corrupted tags.

how do I check the debug.txt?

  • 10.28.2008 12:54 PM PDT

what is sapien?

  • 10.28.2008 1:52 PM PDT

Debug.txt should be located in the same folder as Sapien. If you installed the halo editing
kit to the default folder, its most likely at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom Edition\debug.txt

If you are having problems with a Dual Core I read somewhere (I forget where) that setting
the process compatibility for Sapien to Windows 2000 (if that doesn't work then try them all)
might solve the problem. An easy way to do this would be to create a shortcut to Sapian and open the properties window for said shortcut and finally go under compatibility tab and adjust as needed. Next is to launch Sapien from this shortcut. Hope this helps.

Well, I found the debug.txt. Here is what it said-

10.26.08 13:53:35 sapien pc 01.00.00.0609 ----------------------------------------------
10.26.08 13:53:35 reference function: _write_to_error_file
10.26.08 13:53:35 reference address: 401b13
10.26.08 13:53:35 Couldn't read map file './sapienbeta.map'
10.26.08 13:53:35 CreateDevice succeeded with refresh rate = 0
10.26.08 13:53:36 Sound card doesn't meet minimum hardware requirements. Disabling hardware option.
10.26.08 13:53:36 Increasing sound decompression buffer size to 1048576 bytes
10.26.08 13:53:52 file_open('tags\weapons\fuel rod gun\projectile\projectile.projectile') error 0x00000002 'The system cannot find the file specified. '
10.26.08 13:53:52 couldn't open projectile tag 'projectile.projectile'.
10.26.08 13:53:52 failed to load weapon tag 'weapons\boomboomgun\shotgun'
10.26.08 13:53:53 failed to load globals tag 'globals\globals'
10.26.08 13:53:53 couldn't load game globals (get new tags)
10.26.08 13:53:53 need to get the following tags:
10.26.08 13:53:53 weapons\fuel rod gun\projectile\projectile.projectile
10.26.08 13:53:53
10.26.08 13:53:53 game_load() failed.

So I don't get why I don't have the fuel rod gun and why it failed to load those tags. And sound card....WTF? I tried to change the compatibility but that didn't work. I will try to reinstall everything just in case.
EDIT: So I reinstalled everything but nothing happened! I guess I will get my dad's friend to help me out. He works with computers. And thank you all who tried to help me.

Sorry I didn't keep up with your thread about Sapian not working.

If I remember correctly, the tag called "fuel rod gun.weapon" is for the single player gun and
the multiplayer player gun is called "plasma cannon.weapon"

Grab the Halo Editing Kit Plus from www.halomaps.org on the custom edition section. Install it and use this to get missing tags. Load the single player map called the Maw (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo\maps\d40.map) into HEK+ since this map has the single player fuel rod (its the one that explodes when dropped.) Locate the missing tag 'tags\weapons\fuel rod gun\projectile\projectile.projectile' in the tag browser that opens up when you open the map.

Somewhere in the menu system in an option specify where to extract tags, for convinence you may want to set this to your tag folder "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom Edition\tags", but be sure to keep a backup of your tag folder somewhere incase it gets messed up. This should save you the hassle of reinstalling, hopefully. If you don't set it up your tags will most likely end up on your desktop, forcing you to copy them to where you need them to go.

There may be a checkbox in HEK+ save a list of the tags in the extract tag window - UNCHECK IT. Press ‘ Extract’ to extract the tags.

What I found myself doing on more that one occasion is when I got a tag missing error,
I note the tag and manually try to find it in the single player and multi player maps using
the Halo Editing Kit Plus and extract them to my tags folder, repeating until it works or
a non missing tag error is found.

I don't know about the sound problem.

Keep up with the Custom Edition editing, its quite good when something works like one intended. Also get interested in the www.halomaps.org because there are a buch of tutorials and maps to try (enjoy) and learn from.
