Okay, I realize that Gearbox is a great company, Halo PC/CE is a great game, but honestly -- its 2 years out of date... its running on waterred down X-Box code which, though looking a LOT better than most games today, still doesn't fit with the true gamer's expectations (I'm, however, not one of those gamers. I love Halo, I just want to play Halo with more than 10 active servers :b)
So, here's my interesting little way to save Halo (this is not a patch idea, this is a separate retail game to be sold)
As Halo 2's production is coming to an end, I have yet to find out what, if anything, is up next on Bungie's plate. So, here's a great idea to get Bungie back into the PC/Mac gaming business which I'm assuming Microsoft will bite into.
1) Translate the Halo 2 Engine over to PC, possibly update it if PixelShader 3, etc. come around and fit expectations, etc... whatever.
2) Rip out ever Halo 2 model/etc. and import Halo 1's old models and maps (plus a few new ones)
3) Build a netcode, etc. (Try and include triggers) Kinda obvious where this is going.
4) Provide On/Off switches to Halo 2's engine's benefits, such as vehicle destruction vs. invulnerability, etc.
5) Create a native support for mods, and upgrade the HEK to match Halo 2's engine (and allow things like walls to be blown up, new weapons/vehicles/etc. natively.
6) Sell it in the stores, roll in money, have Microsoft vacuum it from your hands, drink profusely in the gutter at the corner of fourth-and-main from a brown paper bag.
So not only will you almost definately have a smash-hit, but you'll also have an engine waiting and bug-cleared if Microsoft ever says "Translate Halo 2 to PC" or something. All you'd have to do then is rip out all the Halo 1 stuff, and import Halo 2, upgrade the engine if any idea pops in your guy's heads, then release... the netcode would be there, etc.
I'd know I'd be willing to buy it -- given I actually get around to swapping out my GeForce 2 MX-400.
Edit: Also useful to add in anything you wished you could have added in Halo >_> if that's any consolation for adding to my free-time-fun through months and months of your painful coding.
