i personally hate timers. however, when people all around me are cursing at the people using timers, i just sit there and realize how childish it seems. people who use timer's aren't cheap, they're just obsessive. besides, the best thing to do would be to kill them before they get the powerups, or to get to the powerup's first. either that, or team up with a wacko who times. nothing pisses me off more, though, than invisible rocket whores.

You're all making this more complicated than it is. If you don't time, don't play with people who do. Cuz chances are you just play to have fun with your friends. Whore your host on xbc and just kick the whores and don't worry about. I love being kicking for being a whore, it just shows I did my job.
For Halo2 do the same, play with people who are also playing for fun. And let the competitive players, play with each other.
With that in mind, wtf is the problem?

that's another solution. not very good in my case, though. about 4 outta 5 people that i play halo with use timers, so we usually put timers on both teams and they tell us when stuff is back. for xbc, though, i don't have a solution.

Very well said... Hosting your own game is a solution. Those who play competitively usually want to play other competitive players. Although you know there will be stat-whores who host a room called "Newbs Only", ect... just to beat up on newbs and up their stats. Hell, it already happens on xbc (halo) with no stat tracking. But all in all, if you play casualy, hosting your own should eliminate most problems.

You make good points.... However, I think everyone has a place to make recommendations for the sequel. If it weren't for the casual gamers, there wouldnt even be a halo 2. I dont know the ratio of causal gamers to competitive /tournament gamers, but I'm sure MS / Bungie couldnt have relied on sales to competitive players only. I would guess there are more casual gamers. So I feel everyones opinions / recommendations count. Everyone has to pay the same 50 bucks for the game. And Im sure Bungie wants to make everyone (or at least as many as possible) happy with the sequel. If tournament players were to beta test, they would be getting feedback from only tournament players, and not those that play purely for fun. No one's opinion is more important that anyone elses...

While theoretically everyone's opinion does matter, and the casual gamers do make a much larger percentage of the sales. My arguement is based mostly on who has the most knowledge about the game being the most suitable to be giving reccommendations about what is imblanced without the bias of ignorance. If you catch my meaning. I just worry because (and this has happened numerous times to good respectable franchises) gameplay is sacraficed in order to appeal to the masses. So in turn, appealing to the casual gamers of the world usually (not always) results in a loss of quality within the game itself.

All tournament halo players dont just start off that way, they started the same as everyone else, they just made a decision somewhere down the line to take a larger step with their game to become infinitely better at what they're doing. My point is they see both sides. While a casual player doesn't because he lacks the in depth knowledge of the system itself.

Thats exactly why timing should stay in the game. At least the the competitive players could still time. While the casual players could ignore it.

What are powerup/weapons timers?
Is it where a player times how long it takes for a powerup/weapons to pop back up again?

For me I know that the Sinper Rilfe takes more time to pop up, then the AR; etc....

thegtc.com has a list of the weapon/power up respawn times for every level. A popular tournament timer is available at talkingtimer.com. But what i use is basically a portable minidisk player with a custom hour long looping track that constantly says 1 minute, 30 seconds, 10 seconds etc. All i need to do is push play at the beginning of each match, and make sure my batteries are charged :P And i'm constantly aware of when the hill is going to move, when power ups, rocket launchers, etc will respawn. You have to memorize a bit but it's worth it.

Well it's obvious you're not intrested in playing the game at a true compeditive level.

I really don't see how that helps with weapons, but for king of the hill i can see how it helps.

No, i just don't need a timer to beat people.

Well take the rocket launcher and powerups for example in a 2vs2 team slayer match in prisoner. If one team is timing and the other has no clue, then one team is constantly either invisible, equipped with an overshield and/or a rocket launcher. That's an extreme advantage that one team has against the other Especially for a condensed board like prisoner. Fact of the matter is, timing powerups and weapons creates an extreme advantage when ultilized properly against the other team.

nobody saw any powerups at E3 2004 at Zanzibar. Are they even confirmed?

How would you know when the other team took the powerup, so how would you know to start timing?

If that was the case, how come you didn't win the $10,000 grand prize at MLG in chicago a month or so ago? If you're content with beating down people who don't play the game seriously, that's cool, but don't try to use it as leverage in argument.

The whole point apparently is to pick up a powerup, and start timing then. And then be there when it respawns, because you timed. Then THEY don't get it? Get it?

I was not even playing in chicago.
Well out of all my friends, and alot of people a don't really know that i played a beat them.(95% of the time)

It doesn't matter when the other team picks up the powerup or weapon. Starting from the beginning of the match is when respawn times are determined. Meaning, Say the match starts and you wait to pick up the overshield at 59 seconds, after you pick it up, 1 second later it will respawn again Rather than waiting 1 whole minute untill after it's picked up. The same thing can be done with the rocket launcher for additional ammo. But in all reality it's better to pick up the rocket launcher, use up all the rounds, drop the gun and pick up a fresh one because you'll get more rockets that way.

Yea, yea, I hear ya.

I don't need to time, and I don't see why people would be that damn serious about a game.

But if you time, then good for you!

Yea, it helps to time.
Yea its better to drop any weapon and pick up a new one of the same kind for ammo.(not just the rockets)

No i didn't win, but everyone who placed in the top 10 were all avid timer users. And i'm not trying to offend you, but all those people that you beat aren't good halo players if you still don't know how timing works. The best players in the contry are killing people with 1-3 shots depending on the weapon they're using every time all the time, constantly holding the overshield/invisibility, and power weapons like the rocket launcher, and the sniper rifle under their control. I know a lot of guys who have had the same experience with halo as you have. But it doesn't mean they or you for that matter are truely great at the game. It only means you just "might" have enough potential to be a serious compeditor in the tournament scene.

Yea, I've played people with clocks by them.
But i never ask, or knew why they had clocks around them while playing.(I just ever thought about it)

If only they had a small Torurnament in Fl, then I would play.
I just use my skill/smartness, to when the powerups/weapons are available for use. lol...

What did you finish at?(in the torurnament)
