I just picked up Halo PC and a few other games for 15 bucks (thank god for thrift stores).

Halo PC works PERFECTLY on my laptop with XP, but on my desktop (which greatly overpowers my laptop) with Vista it's awful.

Is there any solution to this, or will I just have to use my laptop for it?

describe 'awful'. what's happening?

if you get crappy frame rates, try turning decals off.

My 360 controller isn't working (but it doesn't work for ANYTHING else anyway). I'm getting terrible framerates and the slightest event like an explosion slows it to a crawl. I've turned every detail either off or to low settings, lowered the resolution, nothing makes it better OR worse.

My desktop running Vista way overpowers my laptop running XP, but Halo works FLAWLESSLY on my laptop.

I'll cover the 360 problem first. Have you tried setting it to an active device? Have you set the controls? Do you have the right drivers? For the frame rates problem, turn on vsync, turn off decals and check your drivers.

That's all I can say for now.

I already tried Vsync and the decal thing, didn't help.

I used the controller drivers from Microsoft's website - if those don't work, then I'm confused. I don't know how to set it as an "active device".

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

It's in options under controllers. Then you configure your analog sticks and buttons by going into control settings, clicking over to your controller (device) and then assign buttons and movement axis.

The controller's input is read by the game but it's completely uncalibrated (and yes, I calibrated it in the control panel settings). There's no dead zone on the left stick and the aiming is completely screwed up.

I had that problem too. There's no fix for it.
